Art Fry wanted a bookmark that didn't fall out of a book. He was a singer in his church choir. Often the typical bookmarks he used to mark the pages of the hymns he was to sing would fall to the floor. He worked for 3M where a colleague had invented a semi-permanent adhesive that no one seemed to know what its best use was.

Back when there were typewriters, they were also really useful as a way to keep the paper from falling out as you typed at the bottom of the page. Just put one on the back of the bottom of the page.

To the people whining about this question, it’s a perfect example of why you will never be in the ToC. You do NOT need to know Dutch to get this question right. Here is the pathway: 1.) The man is called van Leeuwenhoek. 2.) Part of his name contains the Dutch word for an animal, and a large one at that. 3.) Dutch is one of the closest living languages to English. This is basic linguistics and if you don’t know that, sad day for you. 4.) Given the closeness of English and Dutch, the word in Dutch should resemble the word in English. Especially if it’s a Jeopardy question. 5.) What part of Leeuwenhoek’s name resembles that of an English word for the same animal? 6.) leeuwen = lion Stretch your mind just a bit and you can recognize “lion” and “leeuwen” are cognates. So cope harder, you babies.

When I saw the clue, I thought that the whole point of asking for the name of the animal instead of the scientist was to avoid subjecting us to some very comical spellings of Leeuwenhoek's name. I did not imagine that two of the contestants would flounder so helplessly. After all, this is the semifinal of the Tournament of Champions. Fortunately, the person who got it is the one going into the final.

Not necessarily. If you know basic German or any of the Romance languages (French, Italian or Spanish, for example), this should be easy. As a matter of fact, even if you don't speak any foreign language at all, just think of the zodiac sign.
