This guy writes and performs his own songs and that is all I am/was aware of. They are all sarcastic, ironic and funny. To hear all this pragmatic and practical advice is kind of jarring. People are deep.

I'm trying to recall the name of the music store in which Barry held his workshop in the 90s. It was upstairs on 48th street. Does anyone know? Also, my dad used to go to Barry's workshop back in the 70s. I think it was in Chelsea. Does anyone know where?

Interesting remarks about KW’s discomfort with bebop. Lee Konitz was the same. It wasn’t his musical vocabulary. I’ve never heard Kenny play bebop. Of course he could play that way. But it’s not his way of expressing himself. I don’t think Lee was at his best playing bebop.

A bit of a different interview, enjoyed it! Laughed a bit when I read in the description that Devo is supposedly a ''post-punk'' band. Admittedly, it's one of the harder bands to put into a genre, especially with all the different styles of music. Personally I'd generalize it as New Wave, even if I like the early Synth Punk and even Avant Garde stuff the most by far.

Question about publishing. If Sony purchased half of (50%) M.Jackson's Atv publishing for $100 million. [Ques.] Then why do people say M.Jackson owned a portion of Sony's publishing. It sounds like it should be one way only because Mike didn't but theirs. Help me understand if you can.

As a professional musician and teacher in NYC for 27 years, I can say that what I learned from Dr. McClary in 1987-1989 at the University of Minnesota continues to inform my teaching and performing to this very day (2024). Such valuable insights - thank you!

Saw Gatehouse at The Royal Albert Hall, London in the 90s he supported Eric Clapton during his 21? nights. If it was based on talent EC (who I love) should would have been lucky to be at the same venue during the same year. Couple behind us decided to have an argument when he came on stage. I had them thrown out! Extra superb musician.

As a composer and producer of music I often tend to obsessively research and romanticize the history of various genres and composers, but isn’t there something to be said for a piece of music standing on its own without the need for context? As an artist, I would like my music to be heard and interpreted purely based off of its sound. Nothing but the notes captured in that moment to influence the listeners emotional state. I think that’s powerful. I feel that everything else can both enrich and dilute the purity of the listening experience. I don’t believe it has to be one way or the other.

Why does everyone assume it's always "songs." There are classical composers and improvising artists that create all kind of forms. And there are a lot of labels for them.
