Oh, wow, finally found this, nearly 40 years after hearing it on John Peel! I taped it at the time but lost it probably 30 years ago and had never grasped the name properly... I was searching tonight for (erm) 'heb gariairnon' (as I thought I remembered him saying), but finally, here I am... and now I REMEMBER him actually saying Heb Gariad! Thanks for posting this and their other stuff. They had a pretty chunky sound!

I love all of Catatonia's stuff but there's just something about their early Welsh songs that is so good and underrated. Plus I love hearing Cerys sing in Welsh, her 2 Welsh cover albums and the Welsh version of her album Don't Look Down are great.

The 2024 Ffa Coffi Pawb documentary on S4C and BBC iPlayer led me to this cassette. Rhodri Puw: _"Gruff and me, I suppose because we liked underground stuff, we decided to form a band. I bought a drum machine you loaded into a ZX Spectrum [an 8-bit home computer first released in 1982]. It was really basic. I could play [New Order's] Blue Monday on it. It played that and it was really sh1t."_ _"We recorded a cassette of nonsense in mam and dad's back room with a little Casio keyboard, a guitar and the sofa as drums."_ Gruff Rhys: _"We just recorded random things. I love Ryan's little word of encouragement to Ronnie just before they start singing. Ronnie, so understandably, was always very nervous about singing with the great Ryan - he sang the baritone to Ryan's tenor so beautifully every single time of course, but according to many who knew him he always dreaded it.
