Oh, I'm familiar with some of the places. Here's how many I can count. 1. Devil's Den at the Gettysburg Battlefield 2. The Catholic Cemetery just before you enter Meyersdale PA on Maple Valley Road 3. CSX tracks taken from the High Street bridge in Meyersdale PA 4. Wind farm near Somerset PA 5. I believe the Knights Inn motel was in Somerset PA as you got off the Turnpike 6. The Abandoned PA Turnpike heading west towards the Cove Valley Service Plaza site 7. Sideling Hill Tunnel 8. Maple Manor at the PA Maple Festival in Meyersdale 9. The Meyersdale United Methodist Church (now Apostolic)

Yeah, Inthe early 2000's it actually shut down and closed. They had a going out of business sale and everythi. Then they changed thier mind after so many people showed there love for the store. So it opened back up. The original owners ran it for another few years. Then sold it to the husband and wife who own the A Christmas to Remember gify shops that are up and down the East Coast. They tured the old Halloween Shop upstairs into there apartment when they go there. Maybe it;s there main living quarters now. But I'm not Sure.

Yeah I'm shocked seeing how bad it got in just 10 short years. It's very upsetting. The Pennsylvania Turnpike to me is a historic piece of history that deserves better and should have been taken care of better. I feel it should be restored to its original look and the Cove Valley Service Plaza should be rebuilt as a museum and a small toll charged to enter and use the Abandoned Turnpike.

A little more info on the old service plazas: The Harrisburg Auto Auction is located at what used to be the Mechanicsburg Service Plaza. Mechanicsburg was one of four service plazas closed in the early 1980s, as Howard Johnson's was preparing to exit the Pennsylvania Turnpike plazas in favor of fast food dining from companies like Burger King, Roy Rogers, Starbucks, Auntie Anne's, Hershey's Ice Cream and others. The other ones were the Denver Service Plaza in Lancaster County, the Pleasant Valley Service Plaza located halfway between Irwin and Monroeville, and the Path Valley Service Plaza located east of the Tuscarora Mountain Tunnel. With the exception of the Path Valley plaza, all were located on the westbound lanes, and all the buildings were preserved to house local companies. You can tell by looking at how close the buildings are to the Turnpike and, most of all, by their exterior design. There are plans to build an interchange connecting the Turnpike to Route 130, so the Pleasant Valley plaza building may be gone in the next ten years. The Path Valley Service Plaza was located just a half mile after you exited the Tuscarora Mountain Tunnel going eastbound, and was torn down after it's closure but the parking area remains, so you can at least tell where it was. I've think I've heard about that Gulf gas station in Fort Littleton before, because I remember seeing it on the news because of something that happened there, but I can't remember what it was. I love how your music went from joyful for most of the video to spooky as you approached the Sideling Hill Tunnel.

Thank You! Some of the info about the Harrisburg Auto Auction and Cove Valley I was aware. But the rest of your info was new for me and thanks for sharing that. @@danielfoster3642 No the Cove Valley Service Plaza is part of the Abandoned Turnpike. About a mile before the Abandoned Sideling Hill Tunnel. I've bern to the Abandoned Turnpike 5 times since my first trip in March 2013. My last trip there was March 2019.
@danielfoster3642
@danielfoster3642 2 жыл бұрын
@@SchardtCinematic You're right. The eastbound service plaza that was located near the Tuscarora Mountain Tunnel was called the Path Valley Service Plaza. I must have confused and mixed up the two names because they both had "Valley" in the name, were located near tunnels, were located within fifteen miles of each other, were both demolished and the only things left of both of those plazas were the parking areas and ramps. They were just on opposite sides of the road, Cove Valley westbound and Path Valley eastbound, and were closed within different timeframes. Cove Valley closed in 1968 when the Turnpike was relocated off the Sideling Hill and Rays Hill Tunnel route and onto the current alignment, and was replaced by the Sideling Hill service plaza, and Path Valley closed in 1983 because the Sideling Hill plaza was able to accomadate both lanes, taking traffic away from the old single lane plaza. I've never hiked or biked the Abandoned Turnpike, but I hope to someday.

So what was Storybook Castle? I remember when it was open, but I never got the chance to go inside the place. Was it a dress shop or something based off of old fairy tales?
@SchardtCinematic
@SchardtCinematic 2 жыл бұрын
Storybook Castle was alot of window displays from New York. Places like Saks 5th Avenue would have displayed and they set up diffrent sections with the window displays to tell the story set up in the displays. Pretty much how they were in the windows of the stores. The lobby area was the gift shop of Storybook Castle. It was only around for about a year or less. My family and I were out there for the Maple Festival and when we arrived at my Aunt and Uncles house my Aunt told us about it and we took my kids down and we went through it.
