been a while since i watched one of your games. think you played pretty well. blue made pretty critical errors in creating that new orleans>atlanta>charleston>miami loop and then not ending the game asap. edit: actually reviewing the game, they didn't have the cards to end it. their mistake was they pass on taking a denver>pittspurgh route and completing that and then just playing their trains off should have given them ~161 points for a very narrow win.

😊 I would've taken the northern route across - once you were in Calgary, you had the white and red to get you to Sault Ste Marie, and on to NY, much quicker than that route across the middle. But, then your additional destination tickets would have sucked big time, so that approach was ultimately the winning strategy. Congrats!!

IMHO - going for the tunnel was the right thing. The Kiev -> Budapest is a backup if you don't get what you need. Extending your train to Palermo via either Roma or Smyrna is another alternative. Or even up Sevastopol and on to Rostov. The cards would not have been wasted. However, points win the game. 😊 From Athina to Constantinople . . . you had the pink in hand and blue on deck for the taking. Those would have been 8 pts vs the 4 you received going via Smyrna. Or at the very end, grabbing two more blue and playing a 4 spot for 7 points vs the 4 points for 2 doubles . . . those little things can be the difference between the W and the L. Made me a little nervous that you waited so long to take the Paris -> Dieppe route, because that usually gets snapped up quick (like Atlanta-> Nashville). A well played game!!

20:10 when you reserved that last card - also could have bought the right-most card for a point and gained a sapphire. Had the game been closer, that might have been the difference between W and L, but of little consequence in this case. Good job! Hope you got the rest you needed. :)

Suggestion 1: start planning those alternate routes a bit sooner. For example, grabbing the blue . . . had red appeared and you could get to Miami the preferred way, the blue could be used to extend your train from Montreal to Helena. Instead of drawing the two blind, and getting useless cards, take the two yellow and extend your train from LA to SF. Suggestion 2: when planning your route, consider the point values. For example, there were tons of yellow available and the El Paso to OKC needs 5 yellow, giving you 10 points, as opposed to the 3 points going from Houston -> Dallas -> OKC. Plus it takes 2 turns to play those 3 points, so it's less efficient. Just some thoughts. There is no 'right' or 'wrong' way to play.

I was 100% with ya until the very end there. 😊 When you played 2/2/2 over those last 3 turns, I think if you took the 2 orange, and then hoped for another orange or wild, you would have 5, then last play is St Lake to SF for 10 points. Possibly a few pink might have appeared to get 5 of those. Even if you ended up with 4 orange or 4 pink, that's 7 points instead 6. Ultimately, it wouldn't have mattered because you lost by more than 4, but it *could* have made the difference under other circumstances. If you had any chance at longest train, your 2/2/2 strategy would make sense.

Absolutely was NOT stupid to focus on the tunnel. If anything, I would say mistake was not saving for it earlier. There were lots of pink available that you could have nabbed, and used the blue for Palermo instead. Anecdotally, I would say the person who claims that route wins about 75% of the time.

Good game! FYI - in the base Europe version there are 6 "long routes" to begin the game. Each player gets 1. If you don't take it then, it doesn't get shuffled back into the deck, nor are the unused ones in the deck. The long routes are all 20/21 points. There are some 15 - 19 routes, but not many. There are different setups for Europe 1912 and Europe 1912 Mega, but in each version, no player can have more than 1 of the long route cards. And THANK YOU for that last comment of "my fellow American ". You sound very American but the Georgia flag had me wondering. 😂😅

😂😅😊 I was literally thinking, " he's TOO focused on that initial card" when you said the same thing. Your goal might need to change when the color you need doesn't show up. Take points where you can get them. In this case, not a single noble card was associated with rubies, so that might not have been the best card as your first pick. Blue is sapphire. :)

15:09 - if you had taken the red to give you a pair, and a yellow to give you 3-of-a-kind. Having those 3 yellow on-hand to get immediately into LA, if the destination card had come up, would have been a good plan. As it turned out, LA didn't, but that triple into Duluth would have been "done" a turn earlier and thus could've potentially been a few less points for blue in the end. Other than that, I think it was a pretty flawless game.

😮One more turn and you would have had the Brest to Marseille - so it wasn't totally horrible that you picked it accidentally. That turn playing the 2 orange would have made the difference. I did a little gasp when you chose it though, ngl. 😂 If you watch your destination tickets, when the route is completed via a station connection, a little "information" icon shows up (the i in a circle) to the right of the cards. TECHNICALLY, when playing the board game, you play the station on the city and at the end of the game you have to declare which route segment you want the station to be applied to. Yiu *can* claim a station at the beginning of the game, for example, Paris is usually pretty congested, so you could plop your station there and then wait to see how it all plays out before deciding which route you want your station to apply to. Online it just assumes for you, but that's why the route isn't 'completed' until the end of the game.

you did need to buy the last two cards in the opposite order. would've saved a turn. big things you want to look at is chaining the cards you buy together. at the beginning of this game i would've reserved the first two cards you reserved plus the 5 red for 2 points and a white in the middle row, bought that to chain into the other mid tier card to chain into the top tier card. another big thing you want to look at is the cost to point ratio on cards. by this metric the best cards in the game are the 7 chips for 4 points cards, followed by a tie for the 10 chips for 5 points cards and the 6 chips for 3 points cards, followed by the 5 chips for 2 points cards, everything else is kinda meh at game start but as you buy cards the costs do come down to a point that some of them are pretty good deals.
@stoogeplays

THAT'S the way to do it. 😊 Ignore those low level cards that don't give you points. Only thing I would have done differently was at 10:30 - I would have bought the 5 point card that cost 3 ruby/7 emerald first, because it gave you the ruby to buy the other card (i.e., if the ruby pile was used up, you had one in hand). However, that is not arguably any "better", just the only thing different.

@@stoogeplays nah you’re pretty good I play a very reactive style. So early on I’ll try to secure any “bottleneck routes” (like LA-Phoenix or Atlanta-Nashville) but after that I’m content drawing cards til I can see where my opponents are building. If they build in my general area then I play faster as needed, but I like to have many options to get from A to B and not have to panic if part of that route gets crowded Downside of my strategy is when part of my route clashes with 2 or more opponents (doesn’t happen too often), then I might have to take a long detour I think you struggle often in the early game because you are hunting very specific routes and thus very specific train cards. But you often seem to have strong finishes from what I’ve seen. You should try out the mega expansion version. I like having more routes to complete and it rewards players who can strategize in the late game (like yourself) with the 15 point destination bonus
