What puzzles me is that first these printers had RS232, and then all of a sudden they were parallel port, an inferior protocol IMO.

Those Phototransistors have a slow response time, hence you are not seeing square edges (slow rise and fall times). Also, the light reflects off the sides of the slots in the white plastic, this adds a bit to the slow rise and fall times as the light transitions when approaching and departing the hole edges. Try painting that white wheel with flat black paint (not as reflective) and see if you get any improvement. I use an Operational Amp after the Phototransistor with no feedback for max gain if I need square edges.
@jacqueschaillet7913 Жыл бұрын
Hi to solve your problem i suggest to paint the plastic to limit the light transmission through the material ;-)

Not an expert. But I think a gyroscope would have worked better than a counterweight?
@seathings4064 Жыл бұрын
True! I did consider that, but the counterweight seemed a more simple and robust solution, and does not need power.

Many dyes and pigments are transparent to NIR light photographic film scanners take advantage of this and use NIR to scan for dust and hair on the transparency This image can then be used to erase these marks from the final image

Aha.. Interesting...lesson learned... although i think, the 100 Ohm resistor for the IR diode is a bit on the low side.. 150 or 220 should be less "agressive" . The LED produces less IR light, which can penetrate through your wheel and the LED would also last longer.. Anyway.. Well done...subscribed and greets from Germany..
@seathings4064 Жыл бұрын
Indeed the 100ohm is very aggressive! I choose it before figuring out the problem was the plastic, as I was trying to maximize the range of the output. Probably with the white plastic I could go with less current.
@nigelgunn_W8IFF Жыл бұрын
The red plastic is not opaque to IR. Try reducing the LED current.

Very cool. Years ago, I had a computer mouse that stopped working when under a halogen desk lamp. It turned out the lamp was swamping the IR diodes in the circuit.

Try experiment with the LED transmitter current in the coupler. It may work better with a lower current giving you a more well defined square wave output. Also the complete unit may have to be shielded off from surrounding daylight.

People throw out cheap printers when they run out of ink. I take them apart and get the motor, wheel, and sensor all connected to nice little pcb’s. Usually get two sets from each printer.

What intelligent person can think of using red filament to block infrared leds? I can't believe you made a video to show something so obvious.

...what intelligent person would give such a comment? An intelligent person might know, he or she doesn't know everything about everything. Please enlighten us all. I would be very interested, to have the effect explained by someone who has understood optics and material science - and/or whatever area of physics might be necessary for the explanation - on such a level as you obviously have.

@@alexanderschmidt8512 I understand that not everyone understands everything. In fact NOBODY understands everything. But no one is making videos because they discovered that 1+1=2. Just because a material is opaque to visible light does not make it opaque to any wavelength. It is something very simple and logical.

Experimentation is part of discovery and learning. This guy has a lot of integrity to show his thought process and how he solved the problem to his needs. He doesn't deserved to get gigged or put down for not using the best materials or not getting it right the first time. We have no idea what his expertise is with IR light. When I worked on IR lasers I thought I new a lot about IR, but that project took me to a new level. So, be kind - his not understanding IR and red plastic will help others in understanding. Also 1+1 is not always 2 in some rhelms of theoretical math. In fact, in some quantum physics contexts, 1 + 1 could equal zero.
@1kreature Жыл бұрын
PLA is colored chemically and may, with the right dye block or absorb IR, but normally most dyes do not influence IR. PLA, as many other plastics is itself is transparent to IR. Black PLA colored with carbon black is your best choice.
@damianchmura5895 Жыл бұрын
Damn, dude, you're using red plastic to IR signal. Red is close to transparent for IR, specially pigments used for polimers. Similar by with blue/violet for UF. Just print different colour, best be black, blue, green, brown. Not best but good to be white, yellow or pink.
