This new Panopticon album is very good. It’s in my top 10 metal albums of the year and I think it’s almost as good as Roads to the North and Autumn Eternal, which are Panopticon’s best albums.

"Slamming Deathcore" can be its own subgenre, but it will never be the one thing people refer to when saying "Slam".

Awesome list Ryan, 2022 was another outstanding year for metal. I also loved the new Kublai Khan TX EP and the new Celeste, Angelmaker, A Wake in Providence, Revocation, Shadow of Intent, Worm Shepherd, Bonecarver, We Came as Romans, Ingested, Bloodywood, Spite, Lorna Shore, Blood Countess, Bodysnatcher, and Malevolence albums as well. 2023 is also turning out to be another great year for metal so far.

This new Cattle Decapitation album Terrasite is downright amazing. I think it’s even better than Death Atlas and is easily one of the best albums of the year. I think it’s their best after Monolith of Inhumanity and the Anthropocene Extinction.

Deathcore and slam are basically the same thing. Blending parts of death metal with hardcore and thrash. A breakdown and a slam riff arent that far apart. They do the same thing.

There is Slam death metal then there is slam deathcore two different genres only thing in common is slam there both slam as long as they have the slam riff that’s it that’s my take on it (Edit)With that saying I obviously prefer the death metal side of slam

The starting 4 songs on the album is the best & heaviest opening songs I've heard on a hardcore record. At least what i can think of. Hardcore is my fav music style along with Deathcore so I've had my fair share of hardcore albums. The second half of the album loses me a little here and there so i would prob give it 8/10 as well. Would be surprised if i hear a hardcore album in near future i like this much 🤘🔥

This album is a solid 9 and I've replayed it dozens of times. Better every listen. Technicalities hidden inside that take time to notice. Air tight production and they fine tuned into their unique style.

Great album! I absolutely hated Catharsis, so this is a nice return to form. This is all guitar driven metal with no rap, weird folk rock or any other shite. Nice review. \m/

Big fan of Machine Head. Great review as always and their discography has been one of my favourites. I do defend The Burning Red and respected Catharsis despite some of the drawbacks but I do have a lot of admiration for the band. This new line up is brilliant which I give the rest of the band lots of respect.

There's Slamming Deathcore and Slamming Death Metal. Both exist and both have great bands. Dehumanized and Internal Bleeding on the Slamming Death Metal side are great imo. RIP Dehumanized. Ingested and Mental Cruelty on the Slamming Deathcore side are also great imo. Devourment are just earlier I guess, doing what they do as they go along.

I'm kind of late to comment but I have some thoughts since both genres are my favorite metal genres and I'm hoping to cover everything "SLAM Deathcore" is kind of a weird term because it gets tossed around way too much. Most casual listeners call it that because the vocals are mostly guttural and growled and there's a few slams here and there. I like Signs of the Swarm but going as far as to call them "Slam Deathcore" feels like a useless and incorrect label considering the amount of slam influences they have aren't enough to make them anything other than very brutal Deathcore. So I get why other slam fans call it "fake slam". For the "fake slam" bands I would call it "Brutal Deathcore" and I think that title fits perfectly. It's like a combination of Brutal Death Metal (which isn't all Slam) and Deathcore. Perfectly fits Within Destruction as well. There is definitely Slam Deathcore, however. In fact, Deathcore has always been influenced by slam, since the crappy Myspace project days and even some of the classic Deathcore bands started off with a lot of slam elements such as Oceano, Whitechapel, hell even Chelsea Grin on their EP were basically crappy cyberslam with breakdowns and high screams. Annotations of an Autopsy are definitely straight up Slam Deathcore on Sludge City. Ingested are kind of pioneers in a sense. If you need a better idea of what actual Slam Deathcore sounds like then there's plenty of bands like that on Slam Worldwide Slam is often a misunderstood genre as well. SLAM is specifically Brutal Death Metal with a harder emphasis on the slams and incomprehensible vocals. You're not going to hear hardly any regular growls on a slam album. Brutal Death Metal more commonly has a combination of the gutturals and squeals with the growls and even occasional high screams. And likewise, you aren't going to hear as much of the technical side of Brutal Death Metal on a Slam album. SLAM has fast parts and even some occasional techy parts, but mostly it's slams; breakdowns you'd hear even on a Deathcore album; and groovy death metal riffs sandwiched between blasts and fast riffs. Mostly groove though because Slam was inspired by Hip Hop as well as death metal, hence the band members dress the way they do. Another thing that makes it Slam is that the lyrics and song titles and band names aren't taken as seriously. There's a gimmicky quality to a lot of Slam, also with the sound bits which greatly influenced early Deathcore SLAM and Deathcore have always borrowed elements from one another because the fan base and the aesthetic and sound have an overlap. They're both very bouncy genres with a lot of breakdowns and gutturals. Arguing which one is "better" feels kind of pointless and incoherent imo. There's definitely a lot of similarities between the two that it seems reasonable to put them up against each other, however they're different enough that both genres are just two different flavors of the same brand. And it's weird comparing them when Slam came first and pioneered a lot of what Deathcore bands do. In that sense you can say Deathcore is the logical step from Slam, but there's a reason the genres have come full circle time and time again to take influences from one another I wrote this because as I said, Slam and Deathcore are my favorite metal genres and I kind of despise the debates and arguments from both sides against one another when really the genres should always just get along and kind of mesh together here and there
