Well, technically, Socrates was ordered to kill himself because he'd refused to take part in carrying out an assassination plot. Instead, he went home! Yes, Gnothi Seauton- he was self aware and evolved enough to know that he didn't want to kill another human being. But it would be oversimplified to say that he killed himself because of self awareness.
