Sometimes, a song chooses someone to present it that just, somehow, gets it. I’m thinking about Linda Ronstadt and “Long, Long Time”, or Ella and “Someone To Watch Over Me”. Well this song chose Kathy. Now she has always been a fine interpreter of a song, but, even by her own high standards, this rendition is something else. Each phrasing, every nuance, every breath, tell the emotional and 0:45 spiritual truth at the heart of this song. Just think of the five bars at the end of the bridge running into the first line of the last verse, a rising crescendo, falling to the tenderness “Mary, did you know….” all sung on a single breath. Absolute “hairs on the back of your neck” moment.

I will always thank Kathy for my love of this song and I do like to still hear her version from time to time. With that said, Cee-Lo Green's version will never be touched and there isn't anyone besides God that will change my mind on that.

There are many Songs About Jesus that are beautiful. “Oh Holy Night,” “Hark the Herald Angels Sing” among them. These songs all tell us what Christmas is really all about. We tend to forget that Christmas is Jesus’ Birthday and everything that means. Kathy Mattea’s version of “Mary did you know” is one of the songs that celebrates Christmas’ meaning but it does so by shifting focus to Jesus’s mother. Mary knew her son was special. The Archangel Gabriel told her so, as did her cousin Elizabeth. Jesus performed His first miracle when He changed water into wine at the wedding feast, but He did so at His Mother’s request. She KNEW her son was special. But did she really know? Did she truly understand? This song is about Jesus’ mother, it’s about Mary. And it touches you in a way few others can. The only other song, that I know of, that touches you this way is Trisha Yearwood’s “It wasn’t his child.” That song by Trisha focuses on Jesus’ Father Joesph. It too is hauntingly beautiful.
