Gteat sermon ! During water baptism, because of the shed blood of Christ, the temple of our bodies is cleansed in preparation for the Holy Spirit to take up permanent residence in our body. Under the old covenant, as the writer of Hebrews wrote, the blood of bulls was ineffective in dealing with " consciousness of sin", which is guilt(Heb.10:2). Thus it could only be covered not removed. As a result, the Spirit of God would only dwell in the temple temporarily resulting in the rites being repeated year after year. The blood of Christ solved this problem. During water baptism the Holy Spirit circumcises our conscience, removing the guilt that results from sin, and returning our conscience to its original childlike sensitivity to wilful sin. This is the " washing of regeneration" of Titus 3:5. The word " regeneration" defined means " to return something to its original state". The original state of our conscience is that if an innocent child. This also makes what occurs during water baptism being " born of water"(John 3:5). Now the Holy Spirit can dwell in the temple of our body on a permanent basis. The Holy Spirit can now be recieved by the believer as the result of the Holy Spirit baptism.
