I remember riding a C636 on IC. The track was the old style jointed rail, in 39 foot lengths. At about 10mph-12mph, that engine started a wild harmonic rocking back and forth so bad, I thought it was going to throw itself off the rails. The engineer told me "Yeah, they all do that". Pretty scary, but it was still a fun trip.

I am new to Pennsylvania. I lived in Oregon most of my 48 yrs .moved to Pittsburgh 2 yrs ago .my father worked for Southern Pacific. I got to ride on sd40-2 "s gp 9's and even some cabooses from the early 80's to the 90's when I graduated high school and UP bought them out . I was missing home and my father who passed 12 yrs ago . I have started realizing how lucky I was as a kid to get to experience the railroad like I did. I am now loving my dive into train history in this state .I love y videos and just subscribed.

I do really want to get some more NS action, and the Southern Tier Line seems nice to railfan, the only challenge, however, being that traffic is pretty low on the Southern Tier. Do you know how I could get action on this line without waiting too long? Any catch on this line means something to me.

I didn't know you were a fellow trucker. I haul an 8 axle wood chip trailer in Michigan. I also fill in hauling asphalt in a live bottom and aggregate in double dump trailers. Hopefully you can make a living off the great videos you make and get out of the cab.

Here's some food for thought.. when I hired on in 2004 my company was already 17,000 ton trains. first video sows only 3 locomotives online and 2 DPUs online.. even if you have a train half that size the town will still cut in half have to balance the power.. anyone who works for the railroad knows this.. fyi long trains take just as long as a 12,000 ton coal.. even if the cut the town so come on guys get with it

I am not a mechanic, but it seems to me. Black smoke from a diesel locomotive is almost analogous to having black smoke belching from a steam locomotive ....with coal fired Steamers black smoke was a sign of poor firing, unburnt fuel the stack because of poor combustion which is because of a fire starved of air. A properly fired Steam locomotive creates almost no black smoke. It's no different with a combustion engine...black smoke is a sign of over rich fuel mix and not enough air resulting in a ton of carbon up the stack. In the days of steam, firemen were chastised for wasting fuel if black smoke was observed. One would think that any smart railroad would get rid of crappy engines that belched black smoke which is a sign of wasting fuel. Yes? No?

yes, the fix would be throttling the train slow to get the perfect air preassure to the turbos in order to mitigate a turbo lag

The problem with the early SD45 20 cyl. engine was our American engineers had the crankshaft throws on several cylinders out of time with torsional vibrations which caused the crankshafts to break way prematurely. The Japanese 🏯 straightened this out by showing our American engineers a little trick in changing the timing on several throws of the crank allowing for a smoother running engine. They've learned this building huge ship engines which don't have the high RPM's as say a smaller diesel engine but the torsional vibrations are the same at any RPM regardless of engine size. After this was addressed among a few block changes to accommodate the newly designed crank the big V20 was as reliable as it's little brother the V16. The 710 V20 which was found in the Conrail Cadillac SD80mac had a horse power rating of 5000hp and with a little tweaking another 500hp could be produced and according to testing was still as reliable as the 5000hp setting, only thing that brought EMD to only bring the 5000hp setting to fruition was the fact anything over that horse power setting would cause the locomotive to over power the track with the current rail systems nationwide. This over powering the track was found also in the 6000hp models in the Horsepower Race between GE & EMD which was decided that around 4400 to 4500hp was optimal for our rails here in the states . . .

I'm a firm believer in someone or someone's paying our lobbyists to get laws passed to bring GE more into play with EMD. These laws of a 10 year service life and Tier 4 fuel emissions are the things that have brought our beloved EMD to it's knees allowing these junk GE's to surpass the greatness of what EMD accomplished for a 100 years or better. The 4-stroke GE has never been reliable isn't going to be reliable as the 2-stroke EMD offerings. There's EMD's still doing their daily assignments that's been built way back in the 40's and 50's. Who in their right minds would want to change something of this nature of simplicity and reliability causing people to spend hard earned money to buy new locomotives every 10 years. Share holders is who, the lazy greedy sum-b!tches . . . Kinda reminds me of a bunch of leeches hanging on for dear life. The EMD 2-stroke platform is the most reliable industrial engine ever designed and built. Goes to show just how smart some Americans can be when he's eat plum up with the dumb-ass . . .
