Right, It helps cap the feeling of endlessness or eternal torment knowing it wasn’t made in a day, but 2,190 days to be completed from all paintings and all choices amongst which paintings put into this piece

This is so cool. The key is to pay attention to the colors and the motion of it all. You could convey this kind of chaos with a still painting but the motion of the film adds a whole new depth to it. On top of that, the changes in aspect ratio are mesmerizing. It feels like what I see in my brain when I'm struggling to fall asleep, and painting it on top of real footage is brilliant. I can only make out the outlines to the shapes.

Prelude 4 seems to show some advancement that the watered down such as preludes 2 & 8 lack. A real richness here compared to most of his flaccid repetitive prelude work. Unlike the others 4 shows direction pushing the frame into richer exploration. I find folly in most of Stan's slap happy imagery scraping but 4 truly speaks to me.

Brakhage's predictable response to Prelude 1 yet with the very clear distinction of optimism at the outset that 1 avoids and instead wanders about innocuously before arriving at a state of chaotic incoherence. In 2 we see hints of a utopian ideal that subsequent preludes both embrace and reject. After the dark masterpiece that is Black Ice, the Preludes offer little more than that of an enabled tapped out artist.

@@hamboomar5661 : Hambo, Carl's work is truly stunning and as of 2010 (there's an interview on here), he was still processing film the old skool way. Brakhage, he did meet and was heavily influenced by, although Michael Snow was his mentor. The trilogy is this, "Air Cries, Empty Water" and "Condensation of Sensations". He is a very difficult man to find on the internet, though.
