I've had the C70 for 4 months now and I like it but it's truly a odd duck. Big step up from my C100 M2, and I understood the pro and cons of the super 35 sensor, but some things I don't like - NO EVF- I truly have found the camera USELESS to use outdoor without a EVF. Very difficult to see settings and critical focus outdoors. Canon clearly sold this partially as a run-and-gun camera and they should have had at least an optional EVF for shooters like me. The C100 also had a much better build quality and hinge on the display was bullet proof - not like the flimsy C70. That said I really like the feature set and codec choices on the C70 and the autofocus since the firmware update is quite respectable. Still overprice IMHO but solid workhorse camera.
@aregal
@aregal 3 ай бұрын
Yeah, the flip screen doesn’t inspire much confidence. That being said, I have grown to rely on external monitors now and run a much brighter monitor (3000nits) on shoots. I dabbled with the C400 two weeks ago and it seems to be a great package out of the box but…..I truly love the DGO sensor in the C70 more. Also, if I need a compact setup, I use the R5C….which has an EVF. So yes, the C70 isn’t really a mirrorless with an EVF nor is it a box camera with a robust and malleable monitor….its an “odd duck” as you say. Hehe.

@@aregal The Panasonic S52 is an amazing camera for the money - terrific low light, unlimited shooting and a cooling fan so never overheats. My co-work (Panasonic fan) gives me crap about buying the C70, but once you've had built-in NDs hard to go back. The C70 is serving me just fine for my type of work. @aregal

My first choice would have to be the Cooke MiniS4i for their rich tone. Next, would have to be nFDs. They have a vintage Canon look that flares nicely. Third, believe it or not, would have to be TTArtisans, they extremely affordable and compact. Fourth, would have to be these quirky C Mount FUJINON machine vision lenses. They’re soft and can only be used in S16 mode but they have an indie feel to them. Fifth, are the non-L Canon RFs, they’re lightweight and the AF is nice.

Interesting to see the Cooke S4 Mini on the R5. At Full frame I notice the Super 35mm lens does not cover the entire sensor. Causing it to vignette. I got the R5C and I'm sure the Super 35mm option in the menu can rectify the situation. Have you tried a 1.6 X extender to make it FF on the R5?
@aregal
@aregal Жыл бұрын
You are correct. A 1.6x extender would definitely as the MiniS4s are made for S35 and take advantage of that adapter I “pushed” the lenses by filming in UHD on the R5 and “digitally cropped” 1.1x by turning on DigitalStabilization. Unfortunately, this introduces a slight degradation in image quality and work on most of my Cookes but also introduced visible image wobbles since the vignette is so close to edge of frame. The 25mm has the smallest image circle which is why it’s vignetting when shooting FullFrame UHD at 1.1x crop. Earlier this year, I got an R5 C and the locked sensor makes it easier to frame for a 1.2x crop via the framing tools. MiniS4is have a slightly larger image circle when compare to the S4s…some say, this larger-than-S35-but-smaller-than-FF format should be called “Ultra35”. Haha. Thanks for watching and participating in the discussion!

@aregal
@aregal Жыл бұрын
@@VIPAH I know people comment on the “Cooke Look” but I do not recall Cooke literally saying that their lenses are made for a specific resolution. What we do know is that Cooke has been making motion picture lenses since the beginning of cinema. I DO know that Cooke has been catering to larger formats like FullFrame. I also recall Cooke commenting that someone using their FullFrame Panchros thought they received a bad set since the focus was “blurry” off-center but Cooke commented that THAT was the Cooke Panchro look.
@aregal
@aregal Жыл бұрын
@@VIPAH to more directly answer your question, it would be safe to assume that Cooke MiniS4is are tailored for S35 film which roughly equates to 6K.
@flyingfox2005
@flyingfox2005 Жыл бұрын
@@VIPAH the whole optimised for 6 or 8k is a little bit redundant as most modern sensors will out resolve even high resolution sensors. The Cooke lenses are very high resolution, but with a pleasing focus fall off which will make them "feel" softer than lenses like the Sigma. These lenses were made with an image circle optimised for S35, but like most sets the longer focal lengths will "cover" a FF / 135 sensor. They will work best however on a S35 sensor, which is after all the standard for cinema.
