Great video - I would disagree with starting with the Horus Heresy, however; half the fun of those initial three novels is having the knowledge of the events to come; and the dramatic irony of knowing that all these stalwart, Imperial Truth-toting secular marines are going to be descending into the mire of religious zealotry some 10,000 years later. Instead I would go with the Eisenhorn Omnibus (Xenos is the first novel) - it's a detective story with plenty of action, and slowly introduces the various aspects of the 40k universe; from Space Marines to what Chaos is etc. For Guard players, start with Ghostmaker and then Necropolis (both by Dan Abnett). He's their best author and brings a lot humanity to the 40k. I would skip First and Only because it was Abnett's first novel, and Ghostmaker is an anthology of short stories that introduces the initial line up - don't get too attached, the attrition rate for characters is in keeping with the Astra Militarum.

Congrats on the engagement dude and I hope you had a great time in New Orleans, a beautiful town. Yes SM2 is by far one of the best games of 2024 by far. Been playing on PS5 and it's been amazing, the melee combat is butter. Also if you are looking for something to read in the 40K universe that isn't in Space Marines or Xenos try the Warhammer Crime books if you haven't read them already. I started recommending them to folks kinda new to 40K and they seem to love 'em. The authors do an amazing job of showing the lives of the average Imperial citizens at the street level and do it in a easy to visualize way. I highly recommend them all.

That was one of, if not the best, episode of Official 40K animation that's been released so far (ASTARTES is still the best IMO but not official..yet), but I am extremely hopeful for that Secret Level 40K episode and just the brief glimpses we got make me think it will be fantastic. The Tithes hasn't been a let down at all yet, especially compared to Broken Lance, and ep. 2 was especially great considering we got to see 5 Imperial factions, that are usually background mentions in the novels, on screen for the first time. We also had a 40K myth finally put to rest definitively but showing a female Custodes. Unlike many I don't consider this a change as GW has never said the Custodes were a Male Only faction, unlike the Astartes. In fact over the past 8 years at least 3 novels have come out saying that Custodes come from the children of the nobles houses of Terra. Not sons but CHILDREN. You do an amazing job of explaining this in the video and I am definitely a subscriber now. Keep up the amazing work.

The thing that I hate about female custodies is that they just don’t make sense like bro a woman would never be even considered by recruiters because women are just generally weaker and that applys to the very best too and if you don’t believe me then just look at trans “women” competing at the Olympics

I still feel like they should have made the female Custodes new like the Primaris if they had to do it instead of retconning them in. Either that or just give more lore to the Sisters of Silence, which essentially serve as a female Custodes order since they're the other half of the Talons of the Emperor. I guess we'll just see where this goes now. The episode seemed okay in terms of action and plot, well it felt pretty standard for a 40k story anyway.

So where not concered about the absolute disregard for the lore of the Custodes? There about to burn this 50+ year of story telling, lore, and essentially it's own universe to the ground if we don't address how much of an negative impact they are going to impress on this beautiful (and hope it will retake its rightful place) Franchise, if we don't do anything about it

Every day 1000 souls are fed to the golden throne (that was a bit after the horus heresy, nowadays because the throne is breaking down even more souls are required) EVERY SINGLE DAY! A custodian is a genetically modified warrior, made by the EMPEROR himself with each one of them being completely UNIQUE. There were no more than 10000 custodes in the time of the great crusade. In the 41 millenium there are even less. The point is this is a mission that is undertaken by the sister of silence because and there are not enough custodes to go around to every random planet in bumfuck nowhere to fetch 300 psykers for the emperor's next meal. The only reason a femstodes was included here, is because GW had to fulfill some rnadom diversity quota, set by the devil they sold out to, BlackRock.

I just ordered Fulgrim. I've watched a bunch of lore videos, played some games including space marine 2. Is Fulgrim a good book to read without a background of the other books?

Funny thing is, that the episode in itself is pretty neat and grimdark. You could've put a male custodian (RESPECT YOUR OWN LORE DAMMIT) in there and everybody would love this.

They did express it before Like they could change it since again. I don’t exactly care. I barely knew of what they were until all of this happened but from what I heard. They were all like the first 10,000 sons right? And they were called a brotherhood?

The only reason why they did it is because of a political push from an organization that i absolutly loathe. It is not that they added female costodes, it's the reason they did it.

The real question is why the female equivalents are always nerfed. I'm fine keeping the gendered equivalents of each other separate, ie SoB as the stand in for "female astartes" and SoS as companions to Custodes. However, in a galaxy full of augmentation, bioengineering, and cybernetics, it is fucking stupid that Astartes and Custodes get to be inhuman immortal warriors who solo demons, while the Imperium spends nothing to enhance the training of its female warriors. They get power armor and a gun, but everyone gets power armor and a gun. It's fine to keep them separate but there’s no reason to make SoB and SoS cannonfodder with curves.

GW could have just said that the mechanicus was messing with gene seed again to make it compatible with women. Instead "there's always been female custodies" comes off as lazy and unimaginative. If the mechanicus can make better space marines, then they can make female gene seeds. Probably from Robutt Girlyman's gene seed.

it just feels like men can't have anything to themselves nowadays :/ like there's no mutual respect anymore, I'm not trying to make Barbie drive a Ford F150, and shoot LMG's out the bed of her truck and I'm for damn sure not trying to turn Barbie into a man. If dudes wanna play with Barbie dolls they have Ken dolls. there's no need to make Barbie into a man. and if the dudes playing with dolls don't like ken, well then why don't they make their own doll, a new doll. doing that would leave the established barbie lore intact without retconning anything. if you don't understand the metaphor yet, barbie's are custodes and ken's are the numerous other female factions and chapters in which are female specific. just leave the established lore alone. it just feels like taking for the sake of taking. and that's why a lot of people push back on something "seemingly this small", cuz when u give a mouse a cookie they ask for milk. Time and time again fandoms have given an inch and the companies take a mile. there's literally no reason to mess with established lore.

I actually don’t mind the concept of female Custodians. It helps them stand out a bit in the already overcrowded position of being a genetically engineered super soldier in the setting. You’ve already got first-born, primaris and grey knights (Yes I understand there is functionally no difference between baseline astartes and grey knights, yet their training, wargear and capabilities clearly set them apart). The Custodes were meant to bridge the gap in some sense between Big E and humanity at large, hence the title companions. I always liked to envision them as not only bodyguards, but as the next step in the Emperor’s vision for humanity. It’s logical that such a group would accommodate both genders, an Adam and Eve type gig if you like. Thus female Custodes add more weight to this distinction in my opinion. As for the general concern regarding their genetic lineage, I’d like to point out that we really don’t know the full extent of WHAT the Emperor actually is per-say. Malcador has described the Emperor’s form as a projection, one he can bend and change at will, so I don’t see much of an issue with his Custodians being crafted as female. It’s not as if they are clones, they merely express his genetic traits to some extent. Overall I think that they are an interesting addition, albeit a poorly executed one in some respects (I mean, if you’re trying to represent women, I think the name of the game is that they can be recognized AS women). Oh, and their existence being a blatant contradiction and retcon (debatable) is a moot point. I mean, come on. 40K is a fucking mess in terms of lore, and that’s part of what makes it so lovable. There is always some nook or cranny in the story where something can be expanded upon. Moral of the story is this: The hobby is bound to change and add new things. Unfortunately the flagrant violation of many franchises by woke ‘culture’ has made fans reflexively hostile to changes of any kind, and justifiably so. But RELAX. This isn’t that bad, and could be the wobbly foundation for something good.
