OF course, the Egg was lifted in the split second or so between one segment of gamecam video and the next. This made it look very, very fast, so I'm not at all disappointed in the fortuitous edit.

Kit #1 goes offscreen for a quick bite of sunflower seeds. It doesn't help. That egg cracking sound cracks me up. Kit #2 has practiced a few times more and performs the Vanishing Egg Trick pretty well.

So in the first seconds he's onscreen, Dad Fox spritzes the bricks at the end of the walk. I've read that this can serve as a marker to other foxes that there is no food present. But obviously not in this case, there is chicken aplenty and eggs and seeds and peanuts and apple slices. So what's up with the lifted leg by Dad Fox?

A quick google and a few minutes reading inform me that the lacewings mature in their eggs within 5 days, and then leave to be larvae elsewhere. These eggs persist because there has been no rain here for 8 weeks or so, and I have not wiped the window with Windex since I first saw them. So these are lacwing egg cases, empty and done.

Thank you for sharing this film. It's not often that we see a fox climb trees. Your planning worked out showing off these cat-like skills. Excellent work!

We started with three, a Mom, a Dad, and a Kit last year in the summer. The Mom we suspect was the victim of a car, the Dad is still around, the Kit grew up and apparently left the territory for new adventures. Now we have a new Mom, and two Kits this year. So that's four present now.

One of the fox appears to be pregnant, or well fed?

I thought something similar last year, and it turned out to be a male fox with a fat belly. I'm only sure about the sex of one of these four foxes, the Dad Fox, because he's given me a few opportunities to see his belly while jumping up or climbing down. I'm also pretty sure about the Mom Fox, because, heh, Kits exist. But I still have no observational record that she's a female, just that very strong coincidental evidence. As for the Kits, one looks like the Dad and one looks like the Mom, but who knows?

I didn't see any fox kits in this video but maybe I missed them. I wanted to point out that this possum is a male. If you look carefully at around 20:08 when he walks behind the bowls and close to the brush, you can see the evidence of that. A female, like me, would have none of that evidence but you can see a pouch if you know what to look for. Sometimes we even have little joeys literally hanging out of the pouch. You can see the little paws grabbing at legs and near the tail. They are usually dark brown in color. Other ways to help figure out if a possum is male or female is to ask yourself, is this possum fat or lumpy looking? We have naturally low body fat. Someone told me it was less than 2% body fat. For context, elite male athletes are often about 7% and bodybuilders in the same category can get as low as 6%. Average men in the US are at 28%. If we are in the wild, as we should be, we may be portly looking but we are not fat. A lumpy looking possum is likely a female carrying joeys. If you can watch long enough when we sit, you might even see them moving around under the fur. Males have a more bulbous look to their foreheads than females. Look at the chest area. Do you see what looks like yellowish orangey staining? That's the male scent gland producing a nice musk that males use when looking for ladies. Male incisors are often larger and more prominent than females. Males are usually larger.

@@MarilynOPossum Thank you for all that! And yes, while uploading and writing the description I confused this video with another that does have Opie and Kits on screen simultaneously. Did you really watch the whole thing? These vids put me to sleep quite well at night.

Just curious if this do not harm the environment as predators stop hunting? I am not putting into question your good will.
@michaelowens82968 күн бұрын
Good question. We are not providing enough snacks to eliminate any individual Critter's need for additional food, with the Critters obtaining their full meals as they normally would. At most we are supplementing their hunting and gathering with some easy to acquire calories. And if we decide to stop, we'll taper off the snack offerings slowly so they can accommodate to the loss of these easy calories.

Opossum have 50 razorsharp teeth. My visiting opi has fur missing. I wanted to apply coconut oil to the bare spot and very quickly he lunged at me, bit me and ran off. He did return later to eat the food I had left for him. Don't touch wildlife.

Good advice. I have one recording about a year ago of an otherwise sedate Opossum leaping into the air and snapping at a bird that was flying past. And almost catching it.

Opossum are mystical creatures with weird habits. I raised 2 babies and kept them inside during the winter. They will eat their own poop. But when it comes to real food, they would want a different menu each day. Never broccoli or spinach twice in a row. I ordered bok choi online. Unless it was mixed with a scrambled egg or yogurt, they would leave it and eat their poop. Tiny little things weighing less than one pound. But determined.
