The first flaw was making it about two cities . That went out of the window with Rory Gallagher who played in Cork more times than he did anywhere else in Ireland , and the fact that he was born in Ballyshannon , lived in Derry and Cork It was right to mention The Undertones but to fail to even mention Stiff Little Finger was criminal. U2 barely ever played anywhere north of Dundalk , Sligo Town or Longford yet they felt qualified to comment about the north lol. As many rightly point out, Horslips weren’t mentioned despite really being the forefront of Celtic Rock and taking Sean O’Riarda’s Marcshulla Ui Neill to new levels with the rockier Dearg Doom while still keeping Irish trad in it . The took part in making An Tain musical . More interesting , before punk boasted about DIY , they set up their own record label to produce their own material . Not sure why you’d ignore Grammy award winners, The Chieftains who had Led Zeppelin , The Rolling Stones and Sting amongst many groups to work with them. Oh, and make it onto a Stanley Kubrick film soundtrack (great ending to that piece ) Phil Coulter wrote for the actual King of Rock n Roll . He wrote two of the most powerful songs ,made famous by the Dubliners, one about his home city of Derry and the troubles . A lot more thoughtful than John Lennon or Paul McCartney band wagon hopping efforts . He wrote in all styles of music Paul Brady has done it all in music . While he grew up in Strabane or Derry I think he was born in Belfast. Another who helped to bring trad and pop together The first true rock n roll star was Luke Kelly ! Hell, you can’t ignore the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Markem . They performed to 60 million on the Ed Sullivan show before the Beatles did it . Gilbert O’Sullivan, ignored . The Barchelors , ignored . Around in the 1960s and were reasonably successful in the U.K.

Re U.K. : It has absolutely nothing to do with the U.K. being too cool for school . A shit load of U.K. groups and solo artists during the 1970-1980s and again in 1990s existed where members were sons and daughters of Irish people. Nothing to do with “Irish passion” either. U2 never really sounded remotely Irish and as far as the Irish saw it , they shunned their background when it suited them, trying to sound American . Bono was all into that religious fanatical shite that a lot of the Americans are into . What rock stars spent his time reading the bible and getting into rows with his band mates , thus , nearly splitting up over religious and social views ? That wouldn’t have washed in Ireland never mind U.K. . Bono and his merry band were weirdos They weren’t happy with Eamon Dunphy’s coverage of their religious antics Most of Europe had little time for “Christian Rawk” that’s why they were slow to take U2 (even then they always sold very well in the U.K. and parts of Europe ) U2 best material was the 1990s when they changed up and turned to Europe , even if the religious themes and spirit didn’t change . Great music from them in that period . U.K. was in the toilet economically in the later 1970s and early 1980s. Also, the IRA were damaging Ireland’s reputation and making it hard for the Irish over there . In the US , they were coming out of their economic slump under Reagan . Made great commercial sense Thin Lizzy went very heavy on the Celtic myths and folklore (granted UK rock was into that with Sabbath and Led Zeppelin) and they were pretty big in the U.K., but they couldn’t get onto MtV in the US , primarily because he was black . Thin Lizzy being Irish, and far far far more obviously Irish than U2 , did little for them in the US . Likewise Rory Gallagher (Gallagher did okay the main Madison Sq Garden though) U2 fans and PR folk really do talk an awful lot of shite but it’s effective . Great propagandists.

Many think their 80s stuff was best and the 90s was too pop influenced, And I agree… But their 90s material demonstrated how great and expansive their range of ability was.

So are the bands mentioned at the beginning, the only ones mentioned. I am a fan of all of them. But so many great irish bands not mentioned. I guess because they didn't make it internationally. I remember particulary bands of the 80's, who I would have heard on Dave Fanning's rock show on Radio between 8am and 10 pm, monday to friday. To name check some, The Blades, a House, something Happens, In Tua Nua, Auto da fe. Radiators from Space, The Golden Horde, The fat lady sings, Microdisney, Fatima Mansions, An Emotional Fish, Cry before dawn, the four of us. okay, better stop there.

If the documentary was the story of commercial rock, played and made popular by Irish people, then it was excellent. But it wasn't. And in not including Horslips the makers missed out on not only one of the most hugely influential bands, but on something truly important ~ the bridging of the gap between the traditional and the rock. Van didn't do that. Rory didn't do that. Even Lizzy didn't really do that {"Whiskey in the jar" notwithstanding and besides "Happy to meet, sad to part" by Horslips came out a year before "Whiskey"}. They played music that may have contained Irish references to streets and cities here and there but the music wasn't Irish. It was Irish guys playing imported music. But Horslips played actual Irish rock. They had rock sound, instrumentation and sensibility. They also explored Irish themes, sometimes actually sang in Gaelic and utilized traditional instruments and came up with a fusion that remains unique to this day. They set up their own label, recorded in Ireland and were based in Ireland. It was some 4 or 5 years before they went to the USA to try their hand there and even then, continued with Irish themed albums. There were other bands like Spud and Mushroom that ploughed similar ground but made zero impact outside a tiny enclave in the Irish {both} markets. If any band can honestly be referred to as "Irish rock," Horslips is that band. So their total non mention in this documentary tells me some interesting things about the makers of the programme. Horslips went a long, long way towards making being Irish in rock legit, if only {but ever so importantly} for the Irish themselves. Other than that, it wasn't bad !
@gavintuesday49594 ай бұрын
The only excuse might be that most of that band were not from Dublin ? The programme sadly thinks that Dublin and Belfast are the only two cities in Ireland . Hell , while Taste and Rory’s solo band had nordies in it , Rory wasn’t even from either city . More links to Ballyshannon, Cork and Derry than Belfast (yes that’s where they got noticed ) Derry just about got a mention . Sure, while you mention Horslips, then there is the Saw Doctors, and what they did for the West of Ireland and the Irish diaspora . They did the big festivals in the 1990s like Glastonbury etc .
