Windows and Intel broke any type of functional standby - Hello! how is that a DELL issue? how long have you been using computers? You need to disable the 'Fast boot' option in control panel and it works fine. It is a windows thing and not a Dell thing.
@mulgul126 күн бұрын
Disabling fast boot sadly does not resolve the issue. That it is a Windows / Intel thing does not mean that Dell is unaffected. I am not trying to assign blame, but just to state the problem.

I am trying to replace the SSD which fucking blows, but I am having goddamn problems disconnecting the battery and the official instructions helpfully show where the screws are, and then give the next instruction: "just unplug the battery". I have none of the problems that you describe, but it is slow as hell as hell & 100s of warning & error messages in Event Viewer... per minute. Some of them say the CPUs are being limited in power by firmware, but Dell ensures me this is an SSD problem...

I'm on a 9510. 3050 Ti + 11900H works well. Honestly, with the new XPS lineup, I think my next laptop will be the Zephyrus G16. The 9730 sounds like a great idea, an XPS with 14C/20T up to 5.4GHz and a 4080 with 12GB of Video Memory with 2x4TB SSDs, 64GB of DDR5, and a 4K 16:10 screen in a 17" Display in a 15" Form factor. But it just doesn't work with the design made for a 1650 Ti and i5-10300H

I also had some of the issues you mentionned on my 9720... the laptop became so hot it damaged my 4k tactile screen. I hat to battle against a crazy screen that clicked everywhere to disable it... I didn't really cared about battery life at the time but some of the issues I had (hot laptop in bag, damaged tactile screen, random blue screens etc) are not acceptable for the price.

Thank you for sharing your experience. I have an XPS 9710 and I can relate to a lot of what you said, but I feel that you may not have done sufficient research before buying this laptop. Many of the problems you brought have to do with the inefficiency of the x86/x64 Intel architecture. The XPS 9730 became available in the middle of 2023. By that point, "Apple Silicon" ARM CPUs have been out for over 2.5 years (the M1 MacBooks were released at the end of 2020). X86-64 is just horribly inefficient. This is precisely why Apple was so motivated to bring their ARM chips to their MacBook/Desktop products. Their problems with high end Intel CPUs like the i9 being severely throttled are very well known. Here's how I see the XPS 17 laptop - it looks REALLY sleek. From the outside, it just looks gorgeous. Also, the display is absolutely gorgeous. The specs are not bad. But they are severely limited by the x86 aspect of it. Also, the keyboard and the trackpad are just average at best. I have not experienced the internal keyboard missing key presses, but I don't doubt that it could be happening. This brings me to my next point.. Here's how I use the laptop: I always put it on a laptop stand and have the power plugged in. This way not only is it at my eye level and allows me to sit with better posture, but it also hardly ever overheats (it helps that I don't do much of video encoding or video game playing these days). Furthermore, I use an external keyboard, mouse, and usually, an external monitor, as well. The battery life is just not good, as you mentioned, but I just wouldn't expect an x86/x64 CPU laptop to have good battery life. Also, one with a 4k display. Given how big this laptop is, I haven't found it much of an additional annoyance to also carry around the power cable for it. Regarding the monitor and docking situation, here's what I've found: it works best if I connect a monitor over USB-C (using a cable that has HDMI or DisplayPort on the other end). With this, it can drive very high resolutions (and presumably higher refresh rates, though I haven't tried higher than 60hz, to be honest). But it's also true that the ports are highly limited in number, therefore I use a USB-C hub from which I also connect a monitor over the HDMI port on the USBC hub. I also connect a wired USB keyboard and even an ethernet cable to the USB-C hub. With this kind of set up, I can easily connect to two 4k monitors (using USB-C cables) and another monitor using the USB-C hub (this one is usually 1080p at 60hz) and, of course, the gorgeous internal display of the monitor, which is now at eye level, because I have it elevated. Personally, I find having 4 screens to be quite the overkill for my purposes, but it's more than possible to have such a set up. The other thing to note is that the XPS laptops are very particular when it comes to docking stations. I attempted to use the Dell Thunderbolt Dock TB15 dock, which worked very well with an old XPS15, but as I recall, the experience with the XPS17 was less smooth. I ended up going with one of the popular USB-C hubs from Amazon, instead of using a fancy Dell Dock. This has worked for me, but I have seen a lot of docks with very good reviews (from companies such as “CalDigit”), which cost $200-500 and I think they would be able to drive many monitors at high resolutions and refresh rates, among other devices. A perfect solution for someone who wants to spend that kind of money. To address a few additional points, you're absolutely right when it comes to the stability issues with this device. When it comes to using the USB-C hub I mentioned, I always disconnect it when I'm waking up the laptop, because I've had some crashes when the laptop is waking up and the USB-C hub is connected. It's annoying to have to unplug and re-plug it, but not too much work for me. The standby/hibernation issue you mentioned is a very big one and it's one that I've experienced with my XPS 9710 when I had it in a bag and it decided to wake up from standby/sleep. My laptop almost cooked itself one time. THANKFULLY it turned itself off and refused to turn on until the temperature was a lot lower. After this scary incident, I stopped using the standby mode and only use hibernation. Yes, it's annoying, but I haven't found it to be a massive problem so far. It might seem like I'm making a lot of excuses for this laptop. That is probably what I'm doing. But I've managed to work around all of its various misgivings, and it's been very good to me. However, I also bought the MacBook M1 Air around the same time as this beast of a laptop and now I've become a much bigger fan of MacBooks. I'm eyeing MacBooks Pro offerings lately. And I think you should strongly consider one of those, as well. Alternatively, keep an eye out for the ARM CPUs coming to the Windows (and Linux) world this year. Snapdragon is leading the charge. Thank you for reading my rant.

Hey, yes, I can totally relate to what you are saying and ended up with some of the same solutions as you did. But I guess that might lead to a further point: Normal users shouldn't have to turn into their own IT department just to be able to use use a laptop :-) I also ended up with an M3 Macbook Pro and wouldn't want to go back!

Don't buy any laptop with an I9.. Seriously not worth it over the I7. The main problem with this laptop is it should be able to use a standard Dell 130/180 power supply and not limit to just USB-C charging. Be smart, i7 and a 1080P display. You are the consumer, do your research.

Thanks for sharing. It is a disgrace. I have issues with my XPS 17 9710. Internet just stops working. From the start this was. I had to install and reinstall the killer driver. Now 2 years later, no matter how often I reset, install all the latest updates, internet just doesn't connects. I used to be a dell fan myself but this is it. Now I have to pay $99 for support? I feel like they have to pay me. All the work and effort I put in of researching and downloading drivers. It is a shame.

I absolutely love my 9730. I edit huge files on it and I would recommend it to anyone. Not interested in running it on battery (and can't imagine professional usage for any prolonged time without it plugged in) or using a 144hz monitor (I guess that only makes sense for games and it's not a gaming laptop) so these don't apply to me. The heat distribution will always be limited on a laptop this size but I find it not too bad. I use it on elevated stand and with external 4k photo display and even rendering large files is fine. I get around 17000 in Cinebench R23 multicore which is def respectable. With M.2 drives, modern CPUs, fast memory the startup times nowadays are so good I see zero reasons to use hibernate/sleep. It takes seconds so it's a non-issue really. So my overall experience is very different! Cheers

This is a bummer. I have an XPS 17 9710, but in poverty spec - i5, 1200p non-touch display, integrated graphics only, and it's easily the best laptop I've ever owned. I used to use it for work even when I wasn't supposed to, because my work laptop is a bare aluminum chassis and gets so sweaty and gross when I'm typing on it, compared to the carbon fiber deck of my XPS. I'd been looking at getting a 9730 w/ the 4080, but I'd been on the fence because I really don't need the CPU horsepower of the i9 and you have to get them both. You've been effective in convincing me not to waste my $2500, but now I'm in a pickle because there really isn't anything else out there that's as nice to type on all day as an XPS...

I'd like to add the horrible WiFi speeds I get with mine. Even after removing all of the "Killer" software (bloatware), MAX DL speeds on 5G home network is 310 Mbs. On a fresh boot up, if I start a speed test right as it initially boots, I can get around 1.2 Gbs. If I wait for the Windows 11 "dust to settle", I consistently get between 280 - 310 Mbs. I've even done a fresh Windows install with no luck. I too have been a HUGE Dell advocate and even recommend them to others in my business. I've had Dell XPS, Precision, Latitude and Inspiron laptops for the last 12 years from Dell and this model is the worst I've ever had.

Everything you say is true. Don't buy the XPS 17 9730! I have this machine (top specs) for about a year now. Mine also had the "missing keystrokes" problem whenever the power adapter was disconnected. Got a replacement machine: same issue. It took Dell nine (!) months to fix it. I still prefer and use my 10-year old Acer laptop (using it right now) and the XPS 17 9730 is literally next to me on my desk, in sleep mode, running hot and sounding like a jet engine, only to show a blue screen of death when I open it. Have used many Dell machines before, but never again.

I was thinking to buy it for programming as my old Lenovo Y70-70 from 2015 (17.3" touch i7-4720HQ 16GB 1TB SSD NVidia GTX 960M) needs to go retirement because of weight, battery life, size and connection to external 34" monitor by hdmi where I got 3440x1440 and only 40 Hz instead of 120 Hz (I gave up trying to get more - any suggestion?). BTW the screen and speakers are still so amaizing and are much better than others plus whatever you do the surface is cold. I bought recently Gigabyte AERO 17 XE5 i7-12700H 17.3" miniLed 4K UHD 32GB RTX 3070 Ti and I sent it back as quickly as I got it - my Y70-70 had so better screen colours, speakers were horribile like metalic sould where my Y70-70 JBL speakers with subwoofer are really great, and after 5 minutes of doing nothing it was hot at the place where you keep your hands !!! That was disaster. So, I considered this Dell 9730 and MSI Creator Z17 and you gave me a bit light on Dell. Seems that MSI Creator Z17 is a better choice.
