The song is about the Baltic-Germans loosing their homeland (called Ostland or "Easternland" - because it was one of the biggest german eastern settlements) "The best of us stayed" was poorly translated and meant that the best of them had fallen in battle whilst the survivors returned back to their ancestors homelands - that also explains the bit about becominh different from their german bretheren (from the west, the south and north [of germany]) The bit about the flag or "Banner" is representing their Culture, and the part about it pointing to the east means that their desire is to one day return to their lost homelands. To a german native you can really hear their pain of loosing their homeland and their desire to return.
