For those of us struggling with high functioning Asperger's; just be aware that a lot of the modern technological advances that we take for granted is the result of the hard work and dedication of people with Asperger's syndrome. Most, if not all the brilliant programmers and computer scientists in Silicon Valley have Asperger's. These people do not need frequent breaks or socializing; consequently, they are able to focus all their time and energy on what most would consider boring and repetitive tasks for long periods of time. Also the brilliant scientists who work tirelessly trying to discover cures for diseases like cancer, etc. are more likely than not on the spectrum. SO, having Asperger's is not necessarily a bad thing. People with Asperger's just need to chose solitary professions that do not require a great deal of social contacts. Careers like writing, research scientists, computer programming, etc. Also of importance is the fact that two of the richest men in the world; Bill gates and Mark Z are said to have Asperger's.

Thank you for sharing your story. My son and my brother have Aspergers. I have ADHD. From watching my brother grow up he never liked for people to know he has Aspergers, because kids can be mean about it. However, he also could not make friends because people couldn’t relate to him. I feel it’s important to let people know what their dealing with, even if you don’t give them the diagnosis, you can give them behaviors you’re trying to improve so they can be mentally prepared for how to relate to you or how to take you. I think it’s equally important to throw some humor in it because you’re not only letting them know this is how you are and you’re trying your best, but it also shows your self-acceptance and that your are still confident on yourself which I believe gains their respect and acceptance. For myself, I struggled with ADHD all my life and always felt stupid because I couldn’t keep up with what was going on because my mind was all over the place and easily distracted. As an adult, I learned to poke fun at myself to others so they would laugh with me, not at me.

These damn liberals try to get everyone to identify with these vocabulary words. It’s retarded because it’s black and white thinking but they’re teaching it. It’s discriminatory thinking. They teach people to be autistic so they can make money from treatment and meds. It’s so sad.

I am 27 years old and since I was about the age of 15 I have had pretty extreme anxiety and depression that’s never left me. I’ve isolated myself so bad because of it. But after a lot of research and my sister also agrees, I am sure I have some sort of autistic spectrum disorder. From first speaking up until I was about 5 I had a speech impediment that I had to see a therapist to fix. I couldn’t understand learning at primary school I would scratch my face and have melt downs in the classroom. Another thing I remember doing and still find myself doing it’s weird and I don’t know why. I used to get so fixated with spinning things. I would play with my cars like normal but I would also spin the wheels on them for ages. And on my bike wheels and my rollerblades 😂😂 I remember my friends getting annoyed because I was so in my world. It’s so hard to explain it but I could be looking so hard into let’s say a new phone. Like I have it in my hand to my face looking at every little thing but I am so into it. I have no idea. As I have gotten older socialising is so tough man I don’t know how to do it it’s like fight or flight. The only time I don’t feel like this is when I am drunk. I am so so so confident but there is times I do completely out of the norm things drunk just like everyone I suppose. Also online test show me on the spectrum. What do you think?

I would say work with a pyschartist to help get a physical diagnosis, it can be hard cause the spectrum has so many levels but if you feel like that word helps you understand yourself then good. But I'll still say go to therapist to help get those physical diagnosis and more tools to help you out!

I’m sorry your gluten intolerance causes those things for you! It’s very similar for me and people don’t really understand because they’re like “it’s a food, why would it make you tired and depressed and oversensitive?” but it does! maybe it’s because we’re autistic? maybe that also happens to non-auts too, not sure.

Asperger's syndrome is part of the autism spectrum disorder owing to that it is on a continuum from high-functioning possessing skills that make them passable of that as someone who does not have that disability. Asperger's syndrome means that a person who have a high intellect and possess adequate social skills that could work on that further, though still working on maintaining relationships with peers, expressing themselves and understanding other people and so forth.

I have been told all my dates, I have Aspergers and I'm always myself. If they can't accept me from me beeing me it's their loss. I'm very opened about my self. I like honest people who are safe in them selves. If a person is shy for example, I like if he tells me. I'm romantic and I say what I mean. I play no games. I alw get nervous when I meet new people and I can't look dates in the eyes, but I alw tell them how I work and why, becaus I don't want missunderstandings.

I did not like Atypical season 1, but like you said, there was enough potential that I watched season 2. It actually was a bit better. I realized that what I did not like about Sam was that he was not empathetic at all; he genuinely seemed completely self-absorbed. Season 2 actually address this character flaw a bit (though I admittedly would have liked more). We also get to see Sam's strengths put on display season 2, so that he seems more like a person and less like a burden on everyone else. Again, it was not a perfect season, but it was good enough that I will definitely watch season 3 if/when it comes out

Aspergers is not what we have, it is who we are. For some reason we have divided up Homosapiens into racial gender divisions. Mentality is our prime defining quality, we think and reason. Someone so different as autistics deserve our own subdivision on the human family tree, Homosapiens Autistia. Growing up mid-century I experienced things very differently. Childhood Autism was called Childhood Schizophrenia and Homosexuality was diagnosed a sever pathology, both deserving of institutionalization with electroshock therapies!! No wonder my otherwise wonderful parents/brother made excuses for me, "he is just shy/different" then dealing with family "shame bearing" a shame dump. Then adolescence rolls around with confusions pilling upon confusions ~~sigh ~~ Somehow it is survivable my advise ~~> learn to enjoy your solitude while experiencing all peoples, beware of smiling deceivers ~~ autists are easily used by others ~~ yet be kind to all ~~

I know how Atypical has a bad reputation among the autistic and Asperger’s community, however I think another show has a good representation. The Good Doctor (which is also getting a 2nd season) is a pretty good representation of someone on the spectrum (to my knowledge: of course I wouldn’t know; I’m not diagnosed with the condition). It’s about a guy on the spectrum who gets a job at this hospital because that’s what he does (like he went to med school and all that jazz before the show starts). They do have a romance thing but it’s not the main focus of the show or even an episode. They discuss how socializing is difficult as well as how people on the spectrum don’t understand a lot of things, but the main character understands some things as well. I believe in one episode, they have a patient who’s on the lower side, so they explore that as well. I think what’s good about the show is that it really isn’t about his Asperger’s. Yeah they mention or allude to it a little bit, but it’s not the focus of the show. He’s a person with Asperger’s and not a stereotype. Feel free to check out the show if you’d like; it’s on ABC.

Dude, I totally get where you're coming from. The whole *spectrum* aspect of Aspergers/Autism, at least from my perspective when it comes to its portrayals and representations in the media, is probably for whatever reason the most difficult thing for writers to grasp...especially if they've never been exposed to the broadness of that spectrum. Having Aspergers myself, I try not to judge too harshly when it comes to a show/movie's particular portrayal of a character with ASD, because from my experience, my specific ASD-esque challenges are usually different from most others on the spectrum (I mean, I don't mean to make this sound weird, but you are legitimately the ONLY person on the spectrum I've come across that I've come to truly identify with lol). And like or it not, a lot of the stereotypes shown in the media are, to an extent, on point. Not to get too personal, but my mother, an Applied Behavior Analyst who deals with kids on the spectrum everyday, can attest to the validity of those stereotypes. That said, I completely agree that writers using archetypes and stereotypes to portray characters with ASD is the wrong way to go. I mean, if you look at iconic characters like Wonder Woman and her rocky history in representing women, you'll know exactly what I mean. I could go on and on, but I think I've written enough of a book here already, haha. Would love to bounce around some ideas with you sometime, if you're ever interested!
