I recognise Peckford Scrap Metal yard. Used to take metal, rags, and newspapers collected during school holidays there and have a laugh with the blokes hanging around there... A few years later I realised it was the haunt of the Richardson crew. Saturday morning pictures at the ABC or Odeon in the Old Kent Road. I remember finding a canvass bag with 5 or 6 pick-axe handles and loops of string attached to the handles, on a bomb site in Neat Street, probably to be used in some kind of robbery - but THAT didn't happen. I remember watching a bloke reaching towards a woman's shopping bag with her purse lying on top, and giving his hand a heck of a kick. That was in the crowded doorway of Ghinns wool shop in Rye Lane, I was about 10 or 11, and if looks could kill, I wouldn't be here now. A prank I regret now... Heating up a 2 shilling piece on my mates gas ring in the flats he used to live in - Rodney Road - and chucking it - using pliers - down to the Sally Army playing in the square. There would always be a heck of a yell and we'd have bets to see how high the coin would go. Naughty-naughty. I moved out of Cobourg Road when I married in 1968. Lived near Crystal Palace 'til 1972 and then moved out of London altogether. Have been living between Brighton and Worthing for 40 years. I did go back to the old 'manor' for a visit, but things were totally different. No feeling of welcome. I suppose I've been away for too long. Nice to think back, though...

I grew up in Cobourg Road, S.E.5. Went to the primary school there. The whole area was razed to make way for Burgess Park. It's amazing to think that we used to save all our pocket money, and when we had enough, travel on a Greenline bus either down into Kent, or up to Twickenham to go fishing, when people now fish in Burgess Park. I was in the choir of St. Marks church, which is now North Peckham Mosque, and the youth club based there. Soap-box carts, one-chase-all-chase, roller skates with iron wheels, Mobo scooters, building a bike out of parts found on rubbish dumps,16-a-side football matches that lasted 3 days, knock-down ginger, the shrimp & winkle man, park keepers in brown uniforms, getting a clip around the ear from the local copper - whether you'd done anything wrong or not - you usually had, or at least thought about it. A bath once a week at the bath house in Wells Way, the doctor chasing you round the surgery to give you your polio jab, East Lane on a Sunday morning then hanging around outside the Thomas A Becket in the Old Kent Road to shout "Wotcher" to Henry Cooper and his brother George as they came out after training. 'Pops' sweet shop in Brymer Road. Nah... Don't remember any of that.

I from the States and as a young man lived in Waterloo and worked in Blackfriars and later in Bermondsey in the late 70s, I was working with Blackfriars Settlement, the Waterloo Action Centre, and the Advice Centre in the Blue as a full-time student intern. I've lived all over the US and in various places around the world, but few places have ever felt as home to me as living and working in north Southwark. The photos show the area much as I remember it, before gentrification and Americanization brought such changes. Thanks for sharing these memories.

Thank you, so many wonderful memories in those streets. I lived just off Tustin Street till I was eight, but still can remember the friendly community I was born in to. Next door neighbours were Auntie and Uncle and friends to this day. I am the last of my birth family so it is so lovely to see the old places with such great memories, and also to read all the comments on a part of London that we all remember so fondly,

We were almost neighbours. I lived in Cobourg Road, the other end of Neat Street. Our house backed on to the R Whites bottling plant. I lived there from '49 until '68. Used to use the public baths in Wells Way, and the library. I used to play in the abandoned warehouse on the canal bank, by the bridge, opposite the library, before they tore it down. Got bitten a few times - loads of rats.
