Yes sir, in fact, I got a batch of jerky going right now. This old buck had a lot of grey in his coat, especially around his muzzle. This was the first buck I’ve shot on opening day. I usually have the best luck the weekend before Thanksgiving, that’s when the rut is in full swing down here. I wasn’t really expecting to shoot anything that weekend, but I’m glad I did. Thanks for stopping by Laner, it’s always good hearing from ya bud!

Dale, this video says it all. Without saying a word, anyone who has experienced the awe and wonder of this beauty, knows the effect of quiet and solitude moments like this one. Well said Ben. The beauty of those mountains, especially in the Fall, speaks for itself. Any words on my part would’ve been an injustice. Nature usually has plenty to say, we just need to be quiet enough to listen. I was pretty much in awe the whole time I was there. Of course, the hardest part about visiting a place like that is having to leave to go home. So glad you stopped by to check it out. Thanks for watching buddy!!

Ben, you’re absolutely right, everything was so majestic and beautiful. I just kept saying “I can’t believe how gorgeous this is”. I’m sure my wife thought I sounded like a broken record, haha. Going at the beginning of October, we were able to catch the Aspens and Cottonwoods in all their glory. That just added another layer of beauty all in itself. Plus, being there at that time of year, the Summer crowds are gone. So we had a lot of the park to ourselves. I’m a sucker for the whole mountain man/fur trapper era, so I really enjoyed checking out the old trapper cabins and walking where the West was wild. I really hope you get to make it out there some day. Those views had me questioning, “Why do I live in Texas?” I hope to be back there at some point, there was still a lot more that I wanted to explore. Take care, buddy. Hopefully you’re getting some Fall weather and colors in your area. Thanks for watching Ben!

Hey Dale, I was waiting for a critter to come jumping out of that hollow log. I’m amazed at the condition of that trestle given its age. that dry climate must preserve that old wood well. Did I read that last bit at the end right? this sits at 8000 foot elevation? Awesome trip Dale, these are the memories we often reminisce. All the best Ben
@OntheTrailwithDale
@OntheTrailwithDale 4 ай бұрын
Yep, that is correct. That trestle is right outside the mountain town of Cloudcroft, NM. Cloudcroft sits at 9,000 feet. It’s a cool little mountain town. Before the roads were built, that railroad was the only way into town. It was a nice 3 mile hike in and out. Best part was getting in the cool mountain air and out of the Texas heat for a few days. I’d definitely go back. Thanks for stopping by Ben. It’s always good hearing from ya bud!

Hey Ben, yeah we were able to drive to Ruidoso, New Mexico for a few days and get out of this Texas heat. It was absolutely beautiful! Any time I’m in the mountains, I feel at home. Of course now it’s heart wrenching to see the forest fire knocking on the door and the whole town having to evacuate. It’s wild to think we were just there, crazy the difference a week makes. Sure hope they get it contained. That tree I walked through must have been struck by lightning because it was split down the middle with the center burnt out and that’s the only way I could figure something like that happening. You are correct about the cooler weather in the mountains. I live in Texas also and in the summer, it about as close to hell as you can get, without dying. I have 40 acres in the national forest about 60 miles south of there. The cabin is at 7500 foot elevation. It gets about 82 during the day and in the low 50's at night, and hardly no humidity. I enjoyed the scenery. Take care.

@OntheTrailwithDale
@OntheTrailwithDale 9 ай бұрын
Hey Ben, yeah this is the video I told you I was slowly working on. I think it slid under alot of people’s radar, my Longhunter videos tend to be more popular as far as views go, but this one hasn’t gained much traction. Luckily that’s not my main reason for posting videos. This is the one that’s similar to yours, where you utilize the different parts of the deer. I had some footage where I was taking the hide off but I was so focused on the task at hand that I never noticed the big shadow of my camera and tripod on everything, so I had to scrap all that. Kind of kills the early 1800’s vibe when there’s a shadow of modern technology in the middle of the scene. Oh well, that’s how it goes sometimes. Definitely glad you stopped by and saw it. You’ve played a great part in me getting involved with all the primitive and rustic stuff in the first place. Hope you’re doing well buddy. Take care!

Hey Ben, glad you could check it out! That spot is way out in West Texas where I’ve been finding my arrowheads. There must have been several encampments on that property way back when. Not to sound too hokey, but it was pretty neat sleeping on the same ground that the Native Americans more than likely slept on. I can definitely see why that area appealed to them. I haven’t tent camped in a good while, I wasn’t sure how this 50 old body was gonna feel the next morning, but to my surprise, there wasn’t any aches or pains. Lots of Texas flint/chert in the area, I’m sure that’s why I’m stumbling across all the pre-forms. I can’t help but wonder about the person who made it and how it ended up there. @OntheTrailwithDale
@OntheTrailwithDale 11 ай бұрын
Hey Ken, yeah that place is littered with flakes. It must have been a campsite at one point. That area of west Texas was inhabited by Lipan Apaches before the Comanches arrived around 1700-1720 and pushed them further west into New Mexico and Arizona. A couple good hard rains passed through there recently so some new pieces got washed up out of the dirt. I’m sure there’s more just 3-4 inches down. I keep thinking a tractor and a big sifting screen would be fun, but having them show up naturally seems more genuine. It was a good day in the field, memories were definitely made. @@OntheTrailwithDale Things actually could be much worse but things have become a major challenge the last few months.Long story short ended up with a torn and detached retina in my dominant eye, under went vitrectomy surgery to remove vitreous fluid and found the issues, lasered the retina tears and the retina membrane flat to the back of the eye where it belongs and injected a silicone oil in replace of the vitreous humor and it remains until retina can reattach, and hopefully stay attached, which to remove the oil will require a second surgery and from the vitrectomy surgery it destroys the lens so going to have cateract surgery tomorrow.Have no visual acuity in the eye after the fourth week and just hoping somewhere down the road whens alls said and done I can somewhat gain some type of funtionality again in the eye.Still can do most things with one good eye, but its best described right now as a feeling of smothering without remedy of change.Depth peception is a big deal especially trying to park in a space.I have to put in park, step out and check how far off I am from hitting whats in front of me.When it appears I'm all over it,I'm usually about four foot away. How do y’all store furs before smoking ?
@OntheTrailwithDale
@OntheTrailwithDale 11 ай бұрын
Once the hide is fleshed, you just let it air dry. As long as it stays dry, it’ll keep that way until you’re ready to tan it. Once tanned, then you smoke the hide. Smoking the hide isn’t necessary, it just keeps the hide from turning hard if it ever gets wet. Smoking also gives the hide a nice color.
