Hi Sarah, welcome to the booktube community! That must have been really tough finding appropriate books on the subject of genocide to teach students. Congrats on writing a book - wow! Great to have you here, looking forward to more :)

Hi there! Thank you for the welcome. Yes, it is tough and still is tough finding books that don't traumatize youth. I just followed you!

Sometimes I am afraid to ask how students are feeling because I am not sure I have the capacity to carry their needs but opening a conversation about struggles can lead to collaborative problem solving❤

I love this topic. "New layers of conversation". I think we are too apt to push these books aside as too easy, too young, etc. But there is so much potential with these books. Thanks for sharing!

I am always questioning if I am enough, and the answers is always yes. Still, academic spaces have a way of interfering with our commitment to students and our profession. Let's lift one another up. It costs us nothing to support each other, even if that means critical conversations in the spirit of growth and care.

Self care (or what i call self-nurturing, more emphasis on being kind to yourself and caring for your well being) is something I struggle with a lot on the work/life balance because there’s a level of guilt to it. In the world there is the ‘grind’ or ‘bustle’ mentality of work work work, and if you’re not working then you’re not successful. I think it’s a toxic mindset that needs to be replaced with the recognition of the importance of nurturing your self, both mentally and physically! Burn out is real, and I think in the academic sphere to be able to support students and peers you need to be in a comfortable place mentally and physically!
@sarah.j.donovan4 ай бұрын
@BaileyHendershott16 Love this. I agree that it is up to each person to nurture their own wellbeing and decide what is healthy for them. For me, reflection and periodic check-ins seem to help. Sounds like having personal definition is key. I love "being kind to yourself." Thanks for watching and commenting. Hugs.

I'm starting teaching jr. high this year in Michigan- 7th and 8th grade special education. My first job was in Chicagoland too though, Highland Park :) I hear what you're saying about changing to keep things alive. That's why I switched districts for this upcoming year! It will be my 16th year teaching.
