Great look at a single issue…now i feel your pain over this incomplete mini series. I think that Shelly Bond mis judged the likely popularity of her Black Crown concept celebrating an esthetic based in a fantasy of a very specific milieu from the early 80s…it’s too bad since the comics themselves were doing a lot of interesting things. I suppose it’s better to burn out than fade away?

The good news is infinite woke is now using more wildstorm characters who were not used during the many years of rebirth.
@colonyofcells3 жыл бұрын
Infinite woke probably needs to be supported bec otherwise, dc will get more implosions and the comics industry might soon collapse. For people who want to save money, the good news is dc implosion is now publishing fewer titles compared to marvel. Hopefully, the comics titles can expand again in the future bec right now, the only non superman, non batman, non wonder woman titles seem to be 4 only: flash, green lantern, swamp thing and a showcase title called truth & justice.

Black Adam and Naomi on the justice league is just an influence of the movies and tv shows on comics which some people like and some people do not like.

Generations Shattered and Batman Superman golden age story are just the usual infinite multiverse stories or infinite hypertime stories and all we got from death metal 7 was a renaming to infinite omniverse.
@colonyofcells3 жыл бұрын
For earth 0 everything matters, most of the pre flashpoint history was restored in between dcu rebirth 1 (2016) and doomsday clock 12 (2020). Doomsday Clock 12 brought back some dead characters like jonathan and martha kent, damage of the justice society, etc. Death Metal also promises to bring back more dead characters like Alfred Pennyworth. Not sure what other bits of history Death Metal 7 has restored in addition to what had already been restored pre death metal such as the return of the justice society which happened in doomsday clock 12.

I definitely hope you do more of these. It's fun to just hear some thoughts on what you've been reading lately. My jaw dropped when you said that the Superman Up in the Sky was your clear favorite among these. I thought it was one of the weakest Superman stories I'd ever read. I know you'll say I'm a Tom King hater, but I loved the Vision and Mister Miracle and I had very high hopes when I heard him describe what he was up to in this series. but for me, boy were most of the segments of this little odyssey clunkers. I did enjoy the girl's questions in the final segment. I thoroughly enjoyed Batman Universe as a kind of Nick Derrington version of the Batman Brave and Bold tv cartoon. And of course you know my complex of reactions to Hox/pox. Anyway, loved listening to this while I clean up the kitchen. Cheers.

I loved this whole conversation, especially the last hour. I think you both made great points on the balance between writers and artists. I would add that even in the case of a very tight script where the artist is taking all the orders from the writer, the right artist can add a lot, and the wrong subtract a lot...from character acting, to mood and tone to he general impact, or lack of impact of each panel and page. On this latest looming DC rebootish thing, I actually feel much better about it after listening to you guys break it down. I do wonder if even new readers want a non Bruce Wayne Batman, as they must be so used to Bruce from so much other media...however I do think they, rightly, expect more diverse leading characters...I have been flummoxed why they don’t make better efforts to build up Supergirl in her own right, rather than constantly as a reflection or refraction of Superman, given her name recognition with young people interested in superheroes. Same with Mera ...

Savage Dragon is approaching 250 issues. Every issue written, penciled and inked by Erik Larson. There was one issue drawn by someone else, but Larson couldn’t take it and went back and redrew it himself. However, Dave Sim wrote and drew 300 issues of Cerebus. I'm not sure what McFarlanes record really is, because he neither wrote nor drew all 301 issues, but they are claiming he’s broken Sim's record. Maybe its just longest running creator owned comic, even though there’s been a lot of work for hire on the book over the years...

On King...and you know his Batman frustrated me too much...I seriously wonder if ANY writer created a 100 issue storyline that you are bound to have a lot of readers for whom it doesn’t work. It kind of boggles my mind that DC greenlit tht in the first place on their most central comic. From a certain angle it sounds weird to complain that someone only got 85 issues to tell their story.

Maybe they have future plans to bring Sideways into the Teen Titans (also there maybe Didio's ego involved in trying to keep his flopped character alive) BTW I must have wondered away from the live feed at the moment when you asked me if there's a digital source of Judge Dredd and 2000AD material. And there is. There is a 2000AD app where you can buy trades and individual issues. It would be nice if was available through Comixology...but I think all the have there are American versions of Dredd from IDW.

Once these big businesses such as Disney and the like start getting involved it's seems predictable that they will try to impose their own 'family friendly' view of the world and start watering down the content of the market which they absorb into their company. It's not right but I think many people have seen this coming. Creativity will be stifled by these remits, if indeed they go through and by the end of it we'll be back to the days of Wertham and the Comic Code of Conduct

I've never tended to think about the younger audience and how to get them into comics, I myself have no children and am only buying for myself so would always go for a more mature themed in nature story wherever it may be from. The titles that are aimed more at the younger market would hold no appeal to me as there (and I'm presuming this as I have never bought any) would be no depth or nuance to the story. However it draws me back to the early DC and Marvel days of say the Golden and Silver ages of comics, the stories there for the most part, let's be honest, are hardly hefty pieces of literature and could easily be handed to a younger audience without too much worry and yet these are the issues we as adult collectors lust over having in our collections.
@longboxreview5 жыл бұрын
Very good point about the Golden/Silver Age stories, but those also lack a bit of sophistication that I think even those younger readers we discuss would find off-putting. I think I shall try an experiment with my 13-yr-old to see if those stories appeal to her.

I'm a little lost with these digests you have over there, my main confusion is why is Archie publishing and distributing Marvel material? Why is Marvel not doing this themselves or am I missing some connection to Archie that I'm not aware of?

I think it's because Archie has figured out how to sell in various places--mostly grocery chains--that Marvel hasn't been able to.

Maybe once upon a time I may have wanted (if money had ever allowed) to go to a Con over there in the US but they now seem such beasts of commercialism that the initial magic that once was there must have been smothered by now and so I couldn't imagine wanting to put a foot in the door just to say I've been there, done that !

So this 'Alternative History of the DC Universe' prestige book is harkening back to the 80's Wolfman & Perez 'History of the DC Universe' which perhaps at the time was exciting to have in that prestige format but these days you need a little more bang for your buck than pretty pictures matched with a piece of prose - I think DC's selling point here is that they are targeting (for want of a better phrase) minorities, the fact that they try and hide this under the wording 'disenfranchised' makes me wonder how much they believe in this product and are worried at the back lash from the so called 'gate keepers' of comics who will see this as pandering to the 'SJW's' and are trying to sneak it under the radar with 'fancy' wording.

I'm curious what you think about this now, assuming you've read the issues so far released (I still haven't read it).

I always find it interesting that no-one will reveal the true impact, sales wise, of the digital sales. To me that sounds like it's impact is negligible at best, if it was a drawing a much greater audience why would they not want to shout from the top of the mountain that it's a winner ?

I've thought the same thing. I think the publishers don't because of the backlash (but really, what does that mean?) from brick and mortar shops.
