I believe the numbers on the back of the iron signify the quarter and the year of manufacturing. 245 would indicate the second quarter of 1945.

Hey there, just found your channel because I'm looking to ID my no.5, it's got the SW in the heart (not in perfect shape so I know it's not worth anything an I'm keeping it to use anyway) but I don't know how to tell the type? It's a no.5 but are all the 5 planes made during the SW years a certain type or id there a way to narrow it down? Thanks for any advice, pretty obvious you know where the bear sh!t in the woods about these old planes lol. Subbed

I've got this plane. It was badly rusted when I found it. I just cleaned it and it's now my go to plane. I love it. I had no idea that mine was also a Type 16 plane until I came across your video. Thanks for sharing.

I just love watching these old Stanley planes. I'm a retired English Carpenter of 50 years and have never seen any of these Stanley planes before. Only English ones

The type 17 planes were manufactured from 1942 to 1945. The type 18 was manufactured between 1946 and 1947.

The type 16 also had horizontal Stanley letters. The type 18 had vertical letters. Some of the type 17 planes had steel depth adjust knobs in place of the black plastic or rubber knobs and some had frog adjustment screw. The one shown in the video has no frog adjust screw.

My favorite thing about old tools is that they can be picked up for 5 bucks easy. You can pick tools up that are almost as good as the modern $300 premium tools for almost nothing.
