Can you recommend any books on the 5 staff forms? I seem to learn better with a book at hand, although your demonstration is superb. Wong kiew kit covers the basics but no weapon forms sadly. Amituofo ☯️

Very cool, I’m not sure 🤔 so as I have no experience but something seems off to me, like the flow of energy seems wasted, too much thinking in his head about how the movement should look like rather than feel like or something
@Weienn7 ай бұрын
I agree, looks kinda stiff
@Sideline10137 ай бұрын
You can also hear his breathing is very heavy, and by the end he sounded gassed. That said, the video is simply titled "student grading", so I'm willing to bet he's more of a beginner/intermediate level practitioner, and if that's the case, he's doing very well and just needs to keep at it, build the muscle memory and focus more on his breathing techniques.
@yourleftisttesticle2 ай бұрын
That's because Baji isn't about internal energy flow. Baji is an external art, and the taolu are meant to capture combat movements, not direct your energy or ground your spirit. Dan Da always looks stiff because of this. However, if you have ever seen sanda between traditional kung fu schools, you'll find that Baji is one of the more effective traditions at training students for actual combat. It is a form you learn for effectiveness, not beauty or peace.

It's a metal staff, aluminum from the look and sound of it, but I'm not certain. It may be hollow, in which case the difference between that and a pipe is closed off ends. More likely has a wooden or light material core. Definitely not solid metal, that would be too heavy to move like that, much less to use as an actual weapon. You don't really need a metal staff though, it's rare to have it chopped through as long as you're deflecting instead of using a hard block, and when it gets too rough you just get a new wooden staff. Extremely heavy staves do have their uses in conditioning, but typically you accomplish the same conditioning with repetitive movements holding ordinary staves at one end, such as Wing Chun uses the dragon pole (long, tapered staff) to strengthen the forearm and elbow. (edited for clarity)
