Lovely memories of singing in this as a treble. The only evensong broadcast from the Abbey I think

Thanks for uploading this! I have the VHS and put various bits of it online in the distant past via the dodgy old capture tech of the day - a Hauppauge PCI WinTV card :-)

I have the video without an edit at the start here - kzbin.info/www/bejne/mnjCoH1_eKlgetk - if the opening seconds might help you identify it. It was on UK terrestrial TV (as tha's all I had), but whether it was Songs of Praise or a Christmas from Canterbury sort of programme, I can't recall. Sorry :(
@ArchiveofRecordedChurchMusic10 сағат бұрын
Many thanks for that, by the introduction and titling it looks like a 'Songs of Praise' broadcast.

Steeleye Span brilliant. My mum used to watch this every week. She is no longer with us and it is a lovely memory of her and my childhood.

We got a recording of this when I was a kid, and used to watch it at Christmas. I'm so thankful it's accessible here. I just love How Far is it to Bethlehem, with the beautiful spiral staircase, and the sweet words.

Magnificent! I have a question for all of you. Since churches are in a period of decline how are you keeping your choral traditions going, especially in smaller parishes?

I saw the VHS of this in Chester (not Winchester!) Cathedral shop when I was in my teens. Here endeth my regret at not having purchased it then! It was once written of Martin Neary that he brought "concert hall finesse to church music" - this recording provides ample evidence as well as opening a window back to a truly marvellous time in Winchester Cathedral's musical history.
@ArchiveofRecordedChurchMusicКүн бұрын
I am delighted the regret hath ended! I think we tend to forget just what a consummate musician was Neary and the Archive has just obtained a tranche of TV broadcasts of Winchester under Neary. A truly golden age.
@markswintonorganist82279 сағат бұрын
@@ArchiveofRecordedChurchMusic I've had the pleasure and privilege of performing under Neary's direction, so I would wholeheartedly endorse your "consummate musician" appraisal of him and will look forward to hearing and seeing some of those broadcasts if you are able to share them here in the future.

I love how they have their arms folded. You know that they were told to fold their arms like that so that they wouldn't fidget as little boys so often do.

Lovely: the choral tradition with boys is long dead in France. It will be the same here too soon. Only Germany seems to cherish the boy’s voice.

What a find! Thank you. The singers seem a bit terrified by the camera... How many of these lads were to be lost in the war, I wonder. And how long did the choir last? There are but a handful of such Catholic choirs left on earth.

I left St Johns College School in the Summer of 1981. I'd have loved to have still been there for that rendition of "Helmsley" especially.

6:01 - Apologies, while the other choristers may have been 'thrown off' by the organ's "tierce" accompaniment in this verse, I should have stuck to my guns and come in solidly with the correct note... instead none of us did. Curiously I don't remember George giving us a hard time about it though.

Great stuff, thank you for publishing. I have a tape of this too, and have uploaded the missing 4 minutes: kzbin.info/www/bejne/naXGqYmBh8iVbZY . The recording was actually made on 9 February 1989 which was "Ash Thursday" (if you will!), to make efficient further use of the BBC's equipment which was already there and set up for live broadcast of the Ash Wednesday service the previous day. I hadn't heard this Vierne before, so Andrew's opening notes straight after the hymn really caught us by surprise - but as usual we just quietly sat down in the stalls and listened until he'd finished and the BBC's red light went off. I waited most impatiently from February to July for the recording to be broadcast, as this piece made a sizeable impression on me.
