Hello, I am in the process of commencing Evensong services at my parish and these have been quite encouraging, even if I am far from a professional organist and I do not have any choir boys.

I remember this one from Primary School back in the 1970s... the term wan't invented then, but I always though this one was "a banger"!

Choral Evensong as it used to be rendered. We still monotone the Creed and Lords Prayer I. The Church where I am organist. Maybe the last Church that still observes this.

All credit to Herr Schmidt-Gaden, a truly great choir trainer. I had the privilege of hearing the Tolzer with Collegium Aureum under his direction sing the Christmas Oratoria in the Frari church, Venice, Christmas 1990. They were weary from crossing the Alps the day before, and had to cut some of the music out, but a magnificent experience nonetheless.

I am enjoying this! What a change to have a Choral Evensong from a parish church even if the choir members are all Oxbridge choristers/choral scholars! Love it!!!! 😊😊😊😊

Lamentations of Jeremiah(Tallis)is the first 18 mins (Michael Chance on top line..still a student) because actually this recording is the later CD version (same title) which added a few things to the original LP (sleeve is illustrated here.) Lotti crucifixus a8 at 25'55''..is sustained tension with a huge crescendo at the peak..

If people think they know "the Kings' sound" which I would argue has been refined, reserved, modest, and studiously avoiding vulgarity and coarseness, from 1982 for 37 years (Cleobury , conductor), then this is a really good example of what went before and was very different. The boys were often exhorted to sing really loud, (only occasionally getting a bit "hooty" ) freeing up lower voices to do the same and emote extrovertly with no need to hold back for fear of drowning the trebles. There's clearly fire in the belly of this lot, even just singing hymn tunes..and I reckon a notable dynamic range, with great ppp's.. and tuning is utter perfection.

This was filmed pretty much exactly 40 years ago in October 1984 and shown at Christmas that year. How do I know? I was one of the Chichester Cathedral Choristers. Remember the lovely Richard Stilgoe showing me and letting me play his brand new DX7 during rehearsals, lead me down the path of being fascinated with synths and later to be working in the musical equipment industry.

I was sitting across the choir from Rob that day. I was in awe as everyone else was, and still am. I still have yet to hear a better treble soloist. How privileged we were to witness this beauty and class every day for 5 years. RIP Rob - I still listen to this every 12th January (Robs birthday). Huge thanks to Barry for training us all and doing all those sneaky recordings!

Does there exist an accompanying recording of the Nunc with Boris Ord conducting? I have been looking for it ever since this video came out and have not been able to find it. Any help would be greatly appreciated, many thanks!

There are no commercial recordings of Ord conducting the Nunc Dimittis. Only the Magnificat was recorded onto 78rpm record by Columbia.

So exacting was Donald Hunt’s direction in the tempos and whole musicality of Choral Music that, in my opinion, it should be adopted as the standard and direct interpretation of the written manuscripts. Truly wonderful to hear these pieces again and my appreciation is greater now than it was whenever I sang them myself! Thank you Stuart and Gwynne for your inspiration and friendship. RIP Donald.

Does anyone know what years Morning Worship began and ended broadcasting? I remember it being on in the 80s, and I'm pretty sure it was still going as recently as the early 2000s... Lovely to see some footage of Buckfast, beautiful location!
