In the book "Chinese Martial Arts Training Manuals - A Historical Survey" by Brian Kennedy and Elizabeth Guo, there is a short chapter on Western boxing, the authors write: "Noted Chinese martial arts researcher and teacher Tim Cartmell wrote, "When the Chinese army was researching and developing their hand-to-hand combat, (which later evolved into the modern San Shou/San Da tournament fighting popular today) they researched all the popular forms of martial arts, including their own. The conclusion was that Western boxing hand techniques, when it came to developing practical striking and defensive abilities in a reasonable amount of time, were superior to all others, including their own".

In a short time training, the modern martial arts seems to be more efficient, because they are more simple, but this simplicity affects after, if ou train a traditional martial art and study all applications, you'll be a very versatile fighter. If you put a beginer boxer and a begginer tae kwon do practicioner, the boxer will win, not because boxing is better, but due to its practicality .

In the beginning phase where they show defenses to jabbing, right crosses, and lower body punches, it appears that they attempted to copy boxing reaction moves or are using basic Chinese kung-fu upper and lower hand blocks but, in western boxing, we generally do not our hands to block, we just bob and weave, use a kind of hand cover as we shift our bodies to deflect their strikes, and as they come in closer, respond with a series of flurries or right cross, left hook combos. When the opponent uses a hand block for our lower jabs or body punches, they have left their face open for our counter.

Boxing does practice using parries and blocks to defend or deflect punches. It's up to the individual boxer or training school to incoporate the type of defense they use. I agree that it's important to guard up to maintain the fighting stance to protect the face which has the vital organs to prevent a knock out. But a hand defense as shown in the video does not really compromise that. The deflecting hand does not leave the head too much as long as it stops the attack as the main priority and the hand returns immediately to the guard position. Many boxers prefer to use their hands to cover their head or bodies against attacks so as to maintain the guard position, or to use evasive techniques such as slip, lean, bob and weave, footwork etc. Certainly there are great merits in these techniques. It is impossible to block or parry against all attacks so we can fall back on cover. And an evasive technique can avoid getting our limbs injured against a very powerful attacker. But let's assume a self defense situation. The attacker attacks you with a knife or a club. Are we going to cover with our limbs and get stabbed by the weapon? A wiser choice would be to block or parry the hand with the weapon and counter with a barrage of attacks to neutralise the assaliant or disarm him. Just my two cent worth of thoughts :)
