I've heard it called "Philly Saddle" by a few ppl. I think the Miyaos call it that as well. I really like this position in the gi because you kinda force your opponent to almost DQ themselves under IBJJF rules while you can attack the ankle lock or toe hold.

Hey Shane, I'm so sorry and embarrassed that it's been so late. There's been so many setbacks on this. I'm Hoping for Monday. If you're happy with it as one big video without the cuts, I'm happy to take a venmo and send you the course when it launches for free, and I'm happy to review a roll of yours or something like that for the inconvenience. Great tips! What is the most effective darce defense in your opinion (once someone has the darce grip)? I feel like late defenses rarely work
@DrewDarce
@DrewDarce 2 ай бұрын
I don't think they work very well either, and (it's an appeal to authority but) I've heard Gordon Ryan, Garry Tonon, Ryan Hall, and Cobrinha all say over the years that it's probably the hardest arm choke to escape after the RNC. The best stuff I've found re: late stage defense is trying to get my belly or my back as flat facing the ceiling, while trying to broaden my chest and maybe get a thumb post in the grip, or try and palm strike beneath their locking elbow. When I see darces fail from people good at them, it's usually because they couldn't finish and had to let go (as opposed to the defender doing something crafty to literally "escape"). So, I try and make them think it's a little deeper than it is, and hope they just burn out. Does that help some?
@HankusMaximus

Thanks for the reply - that’s my experience as well. The “skydiver” is the only thing I’ve had success with against decent people and it’s basically just praying that they’ll give up. When I’m doing this slide in mechanic they are able move their arm across my body like you showed. But I’m not going into the gator roll, I’m just trying to acquire the lock while their weight is settled. What do you do to prevent them moving their arm across your body and ending up in north south when sliding in? Really appreciate the videos!
@jsl8461
@jsl8461 2 ай бұрын
You need to be quite tight if you fall to your side. When I do it, I try to use my chest to pressure it forward into their temple, while also using my left elbow on the back of their head (the head, not the neck!) to lever it down. If their head is kept flush to my chest, it's going to be a lot harder for them to get their left arm across my body. Note that Drew is staying mostly on his side, he is not dropping to his back -- this is important, because his chest is acting as a barrier to prevent the arm from easily making it across. On the other hand, if I am loose -- ie, let's say they are able to lift their head up (ie, my elbow isn't keeping it down) or if they is able to retreat and make space (ie, I am not pressuring forward with my chest) they will have space to get their arm across.
@DrewDarce
@DrewDarce 2 ай бұрын
I’ll show a couple things that can help, and I’ll upload this week. I think staying tight and on your side or your hip (instead of falling to your back) will help a ton. Try and slide your weight down their arm and keep your chest glued to their arm. Actually I did a video a year or two ago on here about that entry that covers some good details on not losing position: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qpLTk5abm7yNgKcsi=rpTcdtdUx0yEUFwM

What is your go to pattern when you're going for the darce ? As in how do you personally decide what you'll go for first
@DrewDarce
@DrewDarce 3 ай бұрын
If I'm gonna do some kind of head and arm, I'm thinking 2 cues. The 1st cue is if their head is under my right or left armpit. If it's under the right armpit I'll probably go guillotine or anaconda. If it's under my left armpit I'll probably go darce. The 2nd cue is their elbow. If their elbow is close to their ribs, or if they have an underhook, I won't try to darce through that. I'll make some kind of play to get their elbow opened up first. But if their elbow is already opened up and away from their ribs, then I'll be more comfortable going for a darce. Does that help some?

you should try out a different grip, when locking up your "reverse anaconda". It might still working but the mechanics of the grip / strangle improve a lot, when you modifie your grip by grabbing your own forearm close to your wrist (lile a kimura grip). The way you do it , sinking it in deep by grabbing your upper arm, has some weakneses. The main ones are: 1.) It only works on opps, who are not much bigger than you / arm length needed (not with the modified grip! 2.) instead of getting a clean strangle you get something more like a neckcrank by using the bladed part of the forearm 3.) it is almost impossible to finish / allows opp for a solid defence and counters 4.) it is very hard to transition to other chokes related to the same position (like the arm in gilloutine for example) greetings from cologne germany, the origin of the Björn technique, also known as darce or reverse anaconda
