In good King Charles's golden days, When loyalty had no harm meant; A zealous high-church man I was, And so I got preferment. To teach my flock I never missed, Kings are by God appointed, And those are damn'd that do resist, And touch the Lord's anointed. And this is the law, I will maintain Unto my dying day, Sir. That whatsoever King shall reign, I will be the Vicar of Bray, Sir! When Royal James obtained the throne, And popery came in fashion; The Penal Laws I booted down, And read the Declaration: The Church of Rome I found would fit Full well my constitution, And had become a Jesuit, But for the revolution. And this is law, I will maintain Unto my dying day, Sir. That whatsoever King shall reign, I will be the Vicar of Bray, Sir! When William was our King declared, To ease the nation's grievance, With this new wind about I steered, And swore to him allegiance: Old principles I did revoke, Set conscience at a distance, Passive obedience was a joke, And pish is non-resistance. And this is law, I will maintain Unto my dying day, Sir. That whatsoever King shall reign, I will be the Vicar of Bray, Sir! When gracious Anne ascendes the throne, Then Church of England's glory, Another face of things was seen, And I became a Tory: Occasional conformists base I damn'd there moderation, And thought the Church in danger was, From such prevarication. And this is law, I will maintain Unto my dying day, Sir. That whatsoever King shall reign, I will be the Vicar of Bray, Sir! When George in pudding time came o'er, And moderate men looked big, Sir, I turned cat in pan once more, And then became a Whig, Sir. And so preferment I procur'd, By our faith's great defender And almost every day abjur'd The Pope, and the Pretender. And this is law, I will maintain Unto my dying day, Sir. That whatsoever King shall reign, I will be the Vicar of Bray, Sir! The Illustrious House of Hanover, And Protestant succession, To these I do allegiance swear, While they can keep possession: For by my faith, and loyalty, I never more will faulter, But George, my lawful king shall be, Until the time shall alter. And this is law, I will maintain Unto my dying day, Sir. That whatsoever King shall reign, I will be the Vicar of Bray, Sir!

"Here a sheer hulk lies poor Tom Bowling, The darling of our crew; No more he'll hear the tempest howling, For death has broach'd him to: His form was of the manliest beauty, His heart was kind and soft. Faithful, below, he did his duty, And now he's gone aloft, And now he's gone aloft. Tom never from his word departed, His virtues were so rare, His friends were many, and true-hearted, His Poll was kind and fair: And then he'd sing so blithe and jolly - Ah! many's the Time and oft - But mirth is turn'd to melancholy, For Tom is gone aloft, For Tom is gone aloft. Yet shall poor Tom find pleasant weather, When He, who all commands, Shall give, to call life's crew together, The word to pipe all hands: Thus death, who Kings and tars dispatches, In vain Tom's life has doff'd, For though his body's under hatches, His soul has gone aloft, His soul has gone aloft."

You'll find a list of Gilbert and Sullivan operettas online. Other than that, you need look no further than the wonderful years from 1940 through the middle of the 20th century to find magnificent music.

Thank you. I meant "What are your other favorites?". LPs of many D'Oyly Carte productions were in our local library in the 1970s. Of many thereof I listened thereto. @@JustineWittich

@@MoivinSulunker I was one of the Three Little Girls in School when we did the Mikado. My brother Tom was Captain of the Pinafore, and my brother Don starred in one I can't remember. I admit to having a weakness for The Mikado, but I love all of them.

After hearing Sallah and Picard sing this for years, the original is...somewhat disappointing. Also, is Pinafore supposed to be a satire, because this dialog seems way too pompous to be serious.
@RenaissanceEarCandy9 ай бұрын
Yes, HMS Pinafore is indeed satire.
