Octopuses have strong visual memories. They distinctly recognize individual people even when they are dressed the same ass others. They also are highly intelligent. This octopus may have "trolled" the beach wondering if the people who saved it "lived on it" in the same way we look for where they live in the ocean. If it thought that (and why not) it might return to see if the people were there. And they were. Being as intelligent as they are, why would they not express feelings and gratitude. We see other animals remember and respond to people for whom they have had affection. It is speculated octopuses are at least as inteligent as dogs. This was a wonderful video,.

I once saved an Octopus in exactly the same way, he too was extremely intelligent, he didn't come to see me the next day but he did steal my phone, and I found out he ordered takeaway and sent dick pics to my grandmother, 🐙 smart little asshole!!

Well, these are some of the smartest creatures on the planet. And we're only just now coming into an age we were we are just beginning to understand consciousness. If we don't drive ourselves to extinction this is a really interesting time to be alive.

thanks for sharing not sure if your asked or are aware, that Wonderbot Animals are using your story, and other than mentioning in the audio your name Helena, and that it was the Red Sea, really don't give any link or credit, other than a casual remark of you sharking it on your KZbin page

Ah bless I dont know why scientists seem to think animals cant experience or express things like love, humour and thanks they clearly do and to witness this in nature is to be blessed. Humans in their arrogance know so little about other life forms around us we have to remember its their planet too and they have been here far far longer than we have, without destroying the very planet that supports us all.

While octopuses can learn to recognize faces, it's highly unlikely that that they could do so after one encounter. It's also doubtful that this octopus came back or waited to thank the people that saved it, it probably just lives in this area and after realizing this couple wouldn't harm it, stuck around in curiosity.
