We have air sourced heat pump with underfloor heating downstairs and rads upstairs. Advice to us is to keep heating on 24/7. On this system the water in the tank has to reach the temperature before the heating sets in so if the house temperature was turned down at night the system would work overtime to reset next day. We have a four bedroom detached property and our only source of energy is electric but using the system as recommended has a yearly cost of £1200 for all our needs like cooking and devices too . The house is lovely and warm ,no cold areas and we have continuous hot water.
@TheFREDAMAN7 сағат бұрын
I was always told by experts that it better to keep the house warm. Warm walls act as insulators and it takes days to restore a cold house. Did anyone notice how the standard daily charge went up considerably. Was this to keep profits high in case people shut off their heating?. I can't find any supplier offering zero standing charge now. Maybe ML should be focused on attacking suppliers for this 'scam'. By throwing the responsibility on the consumer to try and save, he is deflecting attention away from the real culprits.
@TheDavecroftСағат бұрын
Depends on your house though surely? My house has a gable end wall which faces north and it takes the heat away, it takes maybe 3 hours to warm up from cold. But my neighbours gable end faces south so he gets free solar gain from it when the sun shines. Just the same if you have north and south facing bedrooms, the south facing ones will nearly always feel much warmer. Also the reason the standing charge went up was primarily to pay for the cost of sorting out people who's energy supplier went bust, as many did about 3 years ago. It also covers some of losses made because some people refuse to pay their bills, so we all pay more as a consequence. The government stopped the force fitting of pre payment meters so there's not a lot the energy companies can do to get the money they are owed, it's often many thousands of pounds.

I agree, he does have some good common sense tips but he is no expert. He's a bleeding heart millionaire who falls for sob stories. Not everyone who uses food banks is 'starving' and not everyone who doesn't pay their energy bills is skint and deserves to be let off paying, there are a lot of scroungers out there!

I have studied this situation, moisture builds in the house, remedy open your windows in the morning for a few hours to vent the house, then later in the day add heat, the air will be a drier and more comfortable, repeat daily, we do this and if you invest in a weather station with inside/outside monitors you will see it works.

It may depend on the house you live in...that stone cottage takes days to warm up and keeps the heat, at a cost and a cavity wall brick or block insulated will retain heat for hours but will reheat in hours. Older the house the need to continously heat is stronger, but Cob is straw and is easier to heat.

This is my own experience for years i only heated the rooms i lived in when i took my private pension i decided to have my down stairs decorated and I add damp in 2 rooms from that day i heat my whole house on a low heat even the rooms i don't use
@roberthuntley1090Күн бұрын
I modelled it in Excel (a bit simplistically I admit) and the results indicated that turning the heating off for 8 hours only saved about 8% of the heating demanded over the complete 24 hour period. So there is a saving, but its less than you intuitively expect. a. You haven't saved as much heat as you expect because you simply time shifted it to a later time when the heating has to work hard to bring the house back up to temperature. b. The other factor to consider is how your boiler efficiency varies between the two regimes. An old boiler is probably most efficient when it is working hard so that favours turning the heating off. A modern modulating boiler is best when its supplying a low level of heat continuously so favours leaving it on.

and I'm sure Government departments will be turning down the thermostat and switching off lights.

We don't heat our home any longer, we heat one room when we're in it, and that's it. We find heated Gillet's are the most cost effective way to stay warm now.
@roberthuntley1090Күн бұрын
How does that work from a damp/condensation point of view? I'm thinking of warm air from the heated room passing to the unheated ones and causing mould etc. I heat the whole house for an hour or two in the mornings with all the interior doors open to try and even out the moisture content, and after that shut the interior doors and turn down the heat in the unused rooms (but I don't leave them completely unheated).
@TheDavecroftСағат бұрын
@@roberthuntley1090 Houses do not create condensation, heating or lack of heating does not cause condensation, ie. you will not get condensation in an empty house (unless there is a water leak maybe). Burning gas causes condensation but that should safely be vented outside anyway. Mostly, it's people that cause condensation, they breathe out moisture vapour, they sweat, they wash and shower and cook, all these things put moisture in the air, the difference is that in warm air that moisture can stay in the atmosphere, but in cold air or on cold surfaces such as walls, ceilings and windows that moisture will turn back into water and become condensation which can over time cause black mold. You won't normally get condensation in a cold dry room, I keep my unused spare bedroom unheated all winter with the door closed and never get problems. But all houses are different in terms of occupancy, insulation, air tightness, etc. You need to ventilate areas that are lived in, especially kitchens and bathrooms, open bathroom windows for half an hour after showering, even if you have an extractor fan. This might all sound like common sense but you would be surprised how many people don't understand it, I see so many problems caused by putting washing or towels on radiators to dry, don't people realise that when they take their washing out of the washer it is heavy because it is wet and all that wetness goes into the room if you dry your washing in there?

This is the UK. Starmer's excuse for a Labour party would rather spend money on weapons (and supply them to a war zone not connected to UK) than save a hospice at home. Or maybe stop pensioners freezing to death. What's happened to us? Truth is Starmer knows what the city of Liverpool is like and that Liverpudlians would rally round to help their own city.

Vine's a prick, and a major contributor to the animosity created by 'cyclists' and the driving community. I've been a road cyclist for over 50 years and never known such hostility amongst a once harmonious and respectful sharer of road space... Well done green, wokey clowns - you've fucked it, big time, for proper cyclists...
