no problem, it's the quickest (but most expensive) way to cross the English Channel, takes 35 mins Folkestone-Calias (and vice versa). There's no seating either, you either have to stand or sit on the floor. The most annoying thing though is that they load the motorbikes on after all the cars, which means you're stuck at the back when offloading.

Unsafe is unsafe... Doesn't mean it was inherently dangerous but the Police office is totally correct. You fail to notice several things. First of all, at 06:04 you start to drift out of your lane far too early and only just miss the oncoming car, you are almost on the white lines as you are side by side. That is unsafe. At the same point there is a junction ahead sign... at this point you can see the junction ahead on the right and there is also a bend to the left that you really can't see beyond so the overtaking manoeuvre shouldn't have even started. You claim not to have seen the car indicating yet it starts at around 06:05 when you are at least 2 or 3 car lengths behind and only just on the right hand side of the road and could and should have back off the overtake. In this situation you got away with it so it seems to have been safe but there are a number of variables that could have changed the situation and put you and the other vehicle at risk. A safe manoeuvre is to err on the side of caution and this overtake was forced from the very start which is a little silly considering you had already noticed a Police bike behind you. Also, as others have said he pulled instead of the car you because you are more at risk but also because your infraction happened before they started braking.
@pgVeritas6 ай бұрын
Definitely came on, before you’d move to overtake. The cop is right. Also, it’s a right hand junction on a very slight bend. I don’t think I’d have done it. He pulled you because you’re more at risk, and as he said, the start of the bike season. Most bike cops are ok because they understand the point of riding a bike. Get on a Bike Safe course, they’re brilliant. I rode 88k miles in 7 years and then had a 9 year break. I had to pay £850 a year, which unfortunately, I paid in full when I bought my bike. I say unfortunately, because when I let my insurance know I’d completed Bike Safe my premium dropped to £500. I did the course a few months before my renewal. My renewal dropped to £350. It’s definitely worth doing just for insurance premium reductions! Have fun and stay safe!

If there is a police officer following you, whether you are on bike/ motorcycle/car/van. Use the road well within the legal requirements, and you will be fine. Valid.
@donaldjames39126 ай бұрын
I would say it was safe, but under the strict terms of roadcraft, you began the overtake when the right hand turn warning was in sight. It was not the car turning that I would say was the issue (like you said, you could see and control the road space), but you chose to overtake past a junction warning. Forget the car, consider if someone (it'd be an Audi ... ;) ) had come scooting out of that junction at full whack and veered onto the wrong side as it did that. Personally, I missed the sign when I first watched the video, and I'd have missed it on the road too!
@loonaticsrunningtheassylum6 ай бұрын
Looked to me as if he was already committed to the overtake.. and it would have been a range rover driver... Or a taxi.... Or an SUV..
@AG-ti6cp6 ай бұрын
Nice conundrum to stimulate a debate. I see the first orange 'blink' as you pull out - so arguably you could have abandoned the overtake (Safety). However, this would have required braking ( not very smooth, and possibly hazardous if following vehicles were unsure of your intentions). It was clear ( I know this road ) that the only right turn was some distance away and safe to complete the overtake with some acceleration. So, in that split second the decision was fine. The presence of the right turn sign was a factor to consider in the decision to overtake. If you saw it great, if not, one to think about for next time. One final point to consider. You said "..the first blink doesn't occur until I'd accelerated and pulled out" ; textbook use of the system would see you accelerate AFTER pulling out - so, last safety check - move to offside , check its clear and go. By accelerating from the nearside you are closing towards the back of the car while moving out and have less ability to brake and abort. By being across the road before accelerating you have a clear road are going in a straight line and have better ability to brake if you spot a new risk.
@FlowCharge6 ай бұрын
food for thought, thx.

There were also random damp patches on the road which would possibly have made aborting the over take more risky

Once the move was started, it was safer to complete... BUT it should never have started in the first place.
@PokerMuppet6 ай бұрын
@@loonaticsrunningtheassylum if the surface is a risk, then you shouldn't be making aggressive overtaking moves.
@MotoGoato6 ай бұрын
The overtake was fine, you'd already committed to the move before the car started indicating and the offside junction was clear. The only single thing I can see that copper might have thought is that it probably would have been 'safer' to have passed that junction before attempting an overtake .. and in this case the car would have taken the junction option and left the road clear ahead for yourself anyway so no overtake would have been required. Other than that it all seems like a pretty normal and low risk overtake to me.
@philiprandall13996 ай бұрын
It looked to be fine to me - and I agree about the car starting to indicate after you initiated the overtake but, on my RoSPA course, I was given the guidance (by a Police rider instructor) to only overtake if you are able to complete the manoeuvre by the time you reach the road sign indicating the turning. In your case, you started the overtake at the exact point where the right turn sign was positioned, so you were in the zone of a hazard (the section of road between the right turn sign and the turn itself). The threat could be someone pulling out of that side road and turning left straight into your path. In reality, of course, there was plenty of room for you to return to your side of the road before that eventuality could become a risk. But that's the Police - they work to their rule book.

Thanks for sharing this video. This is a great example of normal riding with other road users. My observation of police driving cars lately has been appalling in Surrey and Sussex.. aggressive, tailgating, unnecessary early braking. Perhaps the odd biker needs to be told but it was completely unnecessary to pull you on this occasion - it was simply a 'well done for being committed'. However I don't generally overtake when there are junctions visible to me.

The only issue I have is that your on the wrong side of the road through most of the video. Just kidding. Back on topic, you were already committed to the pass when the car first indicated so , imho, you were perfectly fine. I had a similar situation where a car passed me and then suddenly changed back into my lane and slowed. When I countered to avoid the car and moved into the other lane, the State Police pulled me over and wrote me up for an unsafe pass. Later I found out that the trooper had been fired for attitude and writing bogus tickets.
