You mentioned you used 1x1 square tubing but the target stands available seem to only accommodate 1x2s which are actually 3/4"x 1.5". What was the model number on Midwest that you purchased that accommodates the 1x1 square metal tubing? Thanks for the great video!
@ricktriebwasser42873 ай бұрын
The Midway USA target stand is #606439, which is now listed at $24.99 (!). The square tube that holds the stand uprights actually measures out at 1" x 1.75" internally. Not sure why the manufacturer went with that since it is sloppy for real 1x2 dimensions. I guess they figure the adjustment knob will snug it up anyway. You can tell from the pictures on Midway USA that looks too big to be a 3/4" slot.

Just finishing up mine right now. Couple things I did differently. I bought two sets of the target bases and used one of the bases as a carriage for the target. I mounted my clothesline retractor on my post. Lastly, i couldn't get the gate latch to work consistently. So I bought a southco rotary latch off amazon and paired that with the rod part of a gate latch from home depot. The rotary latch is spring loaded like a trigger mechanism and one small tug throws the rod out of the latch releasing the target. I have the wire for the release run down the post abd through a free floating pulley so you can adjust angle needed to release it. For USPSA I have it attached to a piece of falling steel as an activator.
@ricktriebwasser42873 ай бұрын
Great mods. I thought about doing a shootable activator using a magnet attached to the target frame, then the trip wire strung through the upright to the falling steel. Your idea sounds better.

Dude, I was toying around with the exact same idea in my head today. Couldn't get it to work. And then I found your video. Simple genius. Lifting it up causes the wheels to swing down to center and then when you set it down quick enough it pushes the wheels into the correct position, either under the coop or away from the coop, depending on where the starting point was. Brilliant.

Thanks for the great idea with the retractable clothesline. Beats the socks off of motors, pulleys, batteries, wires and switches....which is the direction I WAS heading until I spotted your Part I and Part II. A tip for catching your brass: get an inexpensive 9x12' painter's canvas tarp (Home Depot) for the brass to land on. They stay put where they land instead of rolling off sometimes with a plastic tarp. Great for catching them when you have snow on the ground too.
@ricktriebwasser4287 Жыл бұрын
Yes, I got tired of staking cheapy blue tarps a few years back and graduated to Harbor Freight mesh tarps. They will stay put in a gale with no staking. Never thought about painter's drop cloth. HF mesh tarps obviously more expensive, but not too bad if you wait for a coupon to come along. They pay for themselves and then some with the brass they catch!

I followed this method and am very happy with the results. I used 11” wheels and they are plenty big even on my wooden coop which I assume is heavier than his.

Have you ever thought of getting one of the retractable clothesline that had 2 cables instead of just one and you could rig it up and have targets coming towards you from two different directions at once!
@ricktriebwasser4287 Жыл бұрын
With some ingenuity, that should work! Didn't know clotheslines got so fancy. For me, it would be total spray and pray to try to hit two moving targets!

Have you changed anything about this since you made this video? I think I’m going to be using a variation of your set up for a axe/knife throwing target range.

Terrific thought put into this to make it so easy to move around. Well, except as an elderly lady...picking up the heavy end...hmmm? So I took the mechanism off an old push mower for raising and lowering the deck...put it on my coop. Hope that helps someone who is not mucho strong like this young man. Your coop is a very nice looking coop also. Everything looks really good. I would be proud to live there if I was a chicken. Jesus bless.

I made a target mover but mine relays on gravity. We hang it between two trees at the range and it works good but the clothes line retractor would get a consistent speed. The clothesline retractor is a genius idea. I would really like more info on the latching or release system.

This was replied to in a comment below: "I used just the cheapest $1.25 zinc plated wire variety that comes with two screw eyes and a hook. One screw eye attaches to the target frame. The latch part I actually screwed on to a 1x2" piece of wood, then I attached a magnet on to that to stick it on the metal upright (but it could be permanently mounted). I used mason string to tie on to the latch hook, then just a tug and the hook pulls free of the screw eye. I looked at some type of remote control actuator system, but quickly gave up on that (batteries, wires, and motors)! One tip, put little distance 'flags' on the trip string using duct tape so you can quickly figure out how far away you are (old Navy technology)."

How about turning?
@ricktriebwasser42872 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, turning requires simple brute force. I recommend pushing from the lighter end of the coup and when you want to turn, just shove the whole rear end of the coup on around to where you want it. It works easier if the ground is wet!

I read in your details about the yard being all shade and using the clear roofing. I would suggest for most people DO NOT USE clear or opaque as your chickens will BAKE. I used the solid panels in the color grey and it still gets very hot and makes it hot for the roosting areas that are closer to the roof inside, during the day, so I am also buying emergency blankets to drape over the top in the summer. And, I think I will cut some of them and pushpin some on the sides of my wooden nesting box as that also collects heat. I live in S.C. so it is very hot but even in any location the clear would act like a greenhouse and bake the birds.
@ricktriebwasser42872 жыл бұрын
Roof panels depends on your situation. My coup is in my deeply shaded yard, so clear panels provide light and (in winter) warmth. If it gets too hot, you can always throw a tarp over it. Heat is obviously a big problem if you have nothing but cactus where you are!

Great idea. I loved this set up so much we are copying you and doing it. I'm having trouble leveling out my cinder blocks for the base though. Any advice or help in getting it level and even so that when your coop sits on it's base there aren't any gaps?
@ricktriebwasser42874 жыл бұрын
Actually on my coop, the wheels roll on the blocks, but when you take it off the wheels, the coop sits just inside the blocks. That way you don't have to have the blocks perfectly level. Best thing for leveling the blocks is to use at least a 2' level and play sand as a leveling base.
