Mine Started Dec. 29, 2024. It felt like a door suddenly shut in the right side of my head. There was immediate loud tinnitus like a very heavy waterfall with someone blowing a loud high pitched whistle right beside it. Pressure also built immediately with a hard sensation of fullness. My head felt like it was stuffed with cotton on that side. I was completely deaf in my right ear. When I stood up, my balance was off. The room did not spin. I just felt as if I would fall if I made the wrong move. Now about 3 weeks in, I was treated orally with prednisone and valacyclovir, on the off chance that maybe I might regain a small amount of hearing in the right ear. I had a very severe attack of vertigo on Jan. 03 after eating something salty for supper. Since then, I have been careful about salt intake, so have not had it happen again. The pressure and tinnitus vary depending on what I am doing. The pressure almost completely goes away and the tinnitus settles to about 40% when I lie down or sit quietly for a while. However, as soon as I get up to do anything, they ramp up immediately to full strength. I wondered if it was blood pressure related, but found that did was not when I checked with my home blood pressure meter. The tinnitus, sound sensitivity and pressure are really annoying. However, I find the accompanying brain fog.and balance difficulties to be the most debilitating. I am determined not to let this get to me. I just soldier on, one moment at a time, realizing that my times are in the Lord’s hands. I am blessed to be a 73 year old woman with a loving, supportive husband. I am incredibly grateful that I do not have to cope with a job or raising small children. I find household chores challenging enough. Doing things like cutting fingers when cooking, falling down sometimes when vacuuming, or needing walking poles to stay safe on my daily walk are a nuisance but they are not overwhelming. Yes, this is life altering, but with patience and faith, there is still quality of life.

This just happened to me 10 days ago. I’m going for my 2nd of 4 steroid shots in my ear. I’m gradually realizing the ringing in my ear seems louder. You are right about the distraction. But I will get through this, I pray for patience and thank God I am still upright! 😇. You have been a great inspiration by sharing your story. Your daughter is so blessed to have a Mom who is determined to deal with this issue. I thought I was being silly to cry over this, but grief and mourning are natural - and in a way healing. You have such a sweet spirit - God bless you and your family!❤️

I was sitting at my desk feeling completely fine when my left ear suddenly closed up and started ringing. I assumed it was just congestion. Took decongestants and antihistamines for a few days with no change. It sounded like I was hearing underwater. 5 days later I went to urgent care and was diagnosed with an ear infection and prescribed antibiotics. That night I had intense vertigo that would last for the next month. I couldn't drive for two weeks. Thank goodness my job allowed me to work remotely. After 5 days of antibiotics, I felt a little better but my ear was still full of fluid. Back to urgent care, diagnosed with eustachian tube dysfunction keeping my ear from draining and told to take antihistamines and call and ENT. I called that day but couldn't get in for 3 weeks. I started doing exercises to regain eustachian tube function. I thought that would fix everything, the muffled hearing, the tinnitus, the vertigo. Three weeks later, I cleared the eustachian tube 5 days before my ENT visit. Still experiencing tinnitus and muffled hearing, but the pressure in my ear was finally gone and my vertigo improved significantly. Took a hearing test at the ENT and was floored when he walked in and told me I had hearing loss. I had been experiencing the tinnitus and muffled hearing for almost 5 weeks at this point and truly believed that it was just going to clear up. Took a week's prescription of prednisone. I couldn't tolerate the high dose and had to take a lower dose. Hearing test a week later showed no change. That's when it really began to sink in that this was permanent. Now I'm waiting to have an MRI in a few weeks to rule out a benign tumor pressing on the auditory nerve. If I could say anything to anyone else out there experiencing this, it would be: please, please forgive yourself for not knowing what you couldn't possibly know. I see so many people lamenting that they didn't get steroid treatment within the 24 - 72 hour window. For one thing, how could you possible know what was happening to you when so many medical professionals don't recognize the symptoms? The other is that, yes, immediate treatment is your best option to regain any hearing, so don't wait if you have the option and resources to seek immediate treatment. But also, don't beat yourself up if you missed that window for whatever reason. I have seem so many people that got prednisone right away, either oral or injected, and it didn't make a difference. Point being, you will never know if earlier treatment would have helped or not, so please forgive yourself if you didn't know to get treatment right away! ❤❤❤

And post the stitch removal i was lying down in OT for 5-10 mins and then i myself walked out. There was no pain or anything felt afterwards 😊😊😊😊😊

That happened to me years ago on my left ear. 20 years later I know animal dander causes full closeness on that ear. Also got tinnitus which gets worse if I go for a walk, particularly on windy days. Dusty environments, salt dust in winter, excess sugar. All of these can throw me into weeks and/or months of absolute deafness on my left ear.

I was totally deaf in my left ear since birth. A tragic careless accident took most of my hearing in my right ear. I also felt like u as a hearing aid helped but my friends would say they have been talking to me & I did not answer cause I never heard them. While a hearing aide is just that an aid not a replacement. It has been 2 months & I know a miracle will happen to restore some if not all hearing. I am a healthy energetic 73 yr old who just retired to enjoy life to its gullies. Never ever did I think a shooting range loud noise incident would ever happen. I go over the incident everyday … I am finally at the acceptance state & manifest hearing which I believe God will hear - if not there is a reason why & He will tell me. Our life can be turned upside down & inside out in a flash- how we handle it is up to us. Thank you bunches for your posts. I remain positive & ask & pray for my miracle

I had my cervical cerclage done at 3rd month of pregnancy and it was done under general anaesthesia so i was knocked out for 15-20 mins and didnt even feel anything. The procedure takes around 5-10 mins. Once u r out of OT and awake and anaesthesia wears off you will feel pressure and mild cramping at your lower abdomen and spotting for 3-4 days. U will be kept in the hospital under observation for one day and discharged the next day. Soo dont worry ladies we got it. Its not that tough 😊 😊😊😊😊😊

Thank you, Esli. I had SSNHL six months ago. First I thought it was an ear infection, but I really had no idea. I went to the urgent care clinic where they gave me antibiotics even though there was no sign of infection. They sent me to see an ENT several days later and I got a hearing text that confirmed high frequency loss in both ears (I already had some just because of age) but also significant low frequency loss in the affected ear. Both of those make it hard for me to understand speech, especially in loud place or crowds. I got an appointment with a neurotologist (hearing specialist) who repeated the hearing test (same results) and gave me a steroid shot like you described. I got a second one. No improvement. The doctor said this was my "new normal." I had the same kind of hearing loss two years ago with a lot of distorted hearing and loud tinnitus; it resolved by itself after many months. My neurotologist said that was very rare, and the fact that it came back made it clear it is now permanent. The first time around, my previous ENT had me get an MRI to see if there was damage to my auditory nerve; luckily, there wasn't a tumor. But what about cause? My current hearing doctor thinks it could be Menière's disease but without the vertigo, but really no clear cause. Are you using hearing aids now? I am, and it has improved my speech recognition when there isn't a lot of ambient noise. On top of this, I am a professional classical singer and conductor, and this hearing loss has affected me terribly. With the hearing aids it's a bit better, but I think I will always be unbalanced in sound perception. Have you considered cochlear implants? Does that make sense? Or have you started to learn ASL? I've got the finger-spelling alphabet down, but only a few other signs. Good luck to all of us!

Thank You so much for sharing. You are such a brave person. While I was watching your vlog, my tears did not stop I went back to what I had experienced in Oct 2020 which was a nightmare. I was working with my client all of a sudden I felt my right ear shut off ... I tried all kinds of home remedies I went to an Urgent Care Steroids prescribed. The audiologist said I had profound hearing loss. ENT, the doctor said maybe Virus. Matter of fact I got COVID-19 Oct the same time as I had hearing loss. As of June 2024, I still have terrible noises in my right ear Nonstop and I'm not going to ENT doctors anymore. I bought hearing aids from over-the-counter. It is so hard to work wearing a hearing aid some people can understand but, some people stare at my hearing aids. some people get annoyed when I ask twice. Every day it has been challenging going to work. Now I am immune to my new life. No choice live with that... Bless You!🙏🙏🙏

Gosh I despise autoplay on KZbin. I wrote a whole comment and when your video ended it deleted what I was in the middle of writing you. I have musical ear syndrome and it is closely linked to my emotions. It is a very short loop that never stops and sounds like a choir of aliens singing underwater. I know several people with tinnitis and they tell me they have learned that intense emotions make the noises intensify. I have adopted many calming routines and distractions and I use white noise to drown it out. Somedays it works better than others. I do better when I am at work paying close attention to difficult tasks. I play KZbins going to my hearing aid via bluetooth. It’s a godsend. One good thing that has come from this musical ear affliction is that I have become adept at seeking out and using sound coping methods. Medications can worsen it. I avoid Advil and other painkillers as well as SSRIs as they can bring on days of no relief because they make me stay in a state of self-forgetting. I don’t want to lose more of my hearing. They work by numbing the nervous system to a degree. Not that great for me in controlling sound disturbances in my ear. Topical pain relief seems fine like BioFreeze for muscle strains for instance. Does not mess with my ears. I have taken on many creative process-oriented creative hobbies and try to stay somewhat active which also helps and I am super lazy so I have to be alert to self-care or I have problems. I don’t do hyper aerobics or unenjoyable routines because I hate those. I am naturally very lowkey and if I hate something it stresses me way the heck out. Biking and walking and swimming are my cuppa - more my speed. I also am much more willing to try things I might enjoy. I have been deaf since birth (rubella syndrome baby) and have worn hearing aids in my right ear since 5. I agree that deafness in the hearing world where everyone I love lives is impossible to accept. I have slowly become better able to cope. My teen years were insane. I am so glad I basically had my methods down by the time I had children. I have also learned new things to help like creating our own home signs (not real ASL) to interact with people I’m close to …such as a sign to let me know someone wants to add something in the middle of a conversation so I will know they are talking. It’s because of my kid that I persist. And people who try are also awesome and make my life much more enjoyable and worth the hassle of being deaf. All the love ❤ and thanks so much for posting this video. It means so so much.

This happened me on Friday around 2PM (5/17/24) while driving down the hwy with my wife. Like a light switch, split second, my left ear went dead. Now all the feeling and symptons with anguish that you accurately described in your video. VERY life changing event!! On max 60mg oral steroids (4th day). Mine is extremely severe with the rushing hissing sound and high pitch ringing with occasional solid tones that come and go. My life is completely different in many ways and you can't accurately relate any of this in words to friends and family that can truly convey the experience. My brain is confused with the sounds and the good ear, the right one, is over compensating for the bad left. Anyway, I'm just doing the initial oral prednisone until day 10 when I go back to ENT for followup, BUT I'm going to HBOT facility at the wound care department of a nearby hospital to try the Oxygen therapy (please look into it, it is possible that it could help). Amazing thing is that the ENT specialist didn't know about it. Be your own health advocate and take charge and research all you can. I'm desperate to try to restore any of my hearing in that ear so I'm willing to try anything that could help while the "window" of opportunity exists. Prayers to all who are dealing with this devastating event. God bless you in Jesus name. Amen.

ANY FEEDBACK APPRECIATED My 65 year old wife has SSHL, started 36 days ago. Primary care doc put her on Medrol Dosepack for a believed sinus infection. At approx. 2 weeks, ENT started her on oral Prednisone 60mg/day for two weeks. At 3.5 weeks, hearing just slightly improved from total loss to severe, (12% word recognition) so ENT suggested injection that day. She wasn't ready for it. Another week later and the audiology exam showed more improvement, to 52% word recognition. Her speech reception threshold dropped to 50db from 80db. ENT said hearing loss now considered moderate to moderately severe, and that a hearing aid might now probably help, and wanted to do the injection again, but wife balked and asked for another week. We know the results vary, but we also know time is of the essence, and she is scheduled for her 1st injection tomorrow, but she's probably not going to do it out of fear that she'll have permanent side effects, like her ear permanently feeling full, or a return of the white noise or tinnitus, or just anything else that would make things worse. Initially the other effects of the hearing loss were very bad (white noise, ear feeling full) and they've eased to the point where she feels she can live with "the devil she knows vs the one she doesn't." I think she should absolutely get the injection(s), but it's not my body and I don't know what she went through for the first month, I only watched her suffer. I know people's success rate varies greatly, but has anyone gotten worse after the injections and/or had permanent side effects from it?

I’m so sorry she’s going through this. I had the shots and got a tiny bit better. I’m not sure they would make much difference after all this time. If she doesn’t have tinnitus I might just call that a win. There are a couple of Facebook groups for people that have sshl. Might be better to ask there. I really felt she had a good chance of improving from the injections but I understand why she didn't do it. She does still have some issues though with weird "issues" in the ear that she finds hard to articulate, but that she says cause her to be exhausted by the end of the day. Like all the weird background noise and ear straining is draining her brain. I appreciate the FB suggestion, I will share that info w/her today and maybe she'll join a couple of those groups. They seem to be transplanting every other organ in the body, so why not ears? Is there not a surgery that you can have to at least turn off the annoying ringing in your right ear? Do you call that tinnitus? Strange that you are deaf in that ear and yet you still hear loud sounds in it. How are you able to sleep at night? Ears don't seem to be getting the attention and research they deserve. You are so young and beautiful and yet spite of everything that has happened to you feel a genuine empathy for others who are also afflicted. I have SSHL, it's only been 10 weeks. I've had 2 rounds of oral steroids & 1 round of antibiotics. Hearing test came back normal in my left ear & no hearing at all in my right ear. I had really bad vertigo for a week with the onset of the fulness sensation & no hearing in my right ear. Balance was so off that I couldn't drive for a month, now I'm at 95% for my balance. Although when I get tired or at night in the dark, I really have to concentrate so I don't fall. I am seeing an ENT specialist for just ears and received a steroid injection through the ear drum. Dr said he has helped people get hearing back as far as 6 months after the initial onset. The steroid was 1/2cc of Decadron 24ml. He will repeat the injection in 1 month after a hearing test if my hearing improves at all. This cycle will repeat until I have a hearing test that shows no improvement. He said 70% of people that get this stronger steroid injection have hearing improvement that they can then use a hearing aid. If there is no improvement, then a bone conduction hearing device and be surgically implanted or a cochlear implant could be another option. Hopefully this information can help others going through this.
