Hey bro! Loved this video. I'm an artist who has been using the SM7B for almost a year now. I make pop vocals mainly, but I can never get the smooth sound I want no matter how many videos I watch with the SM7B. Usually the problem I have is I end up with it being too boomy or too harsh. Is there any settings you would change for a male vocal? Thank you so much!

What do you mean by channel strip in the phrase “I thought the eq is on the channel strip”, in the DAW, where you manipulate the stock DAW equaliser? I saw the writing “ vocals mono + stereo”, is that some kind of a vocal group or a vocal bus with just the raw vocal tracks? Can you explain more? After rewatching it seems like you meant the stock equliser on the lead vocal track, right? But why is it labeled “mono+stereo”? What tracks does that stock equaliser affect?
@davidterry8252
@davidterry8252 2 жыл бұрын
Every channel in Nuendo has a built in stock EQ. So yes, I did a bit of EQ using the stock EQ on her vocal. The mono-stereo wording indicates that the vocal track is mono but it's destination is a stereo bus or stereo output. The stock eq only effects the track on which you apply it.

@@davidterry8252 Okay. You used SM7B in a treated environment. Did you compare how SM7B records in studio and non-studio conditions? Did you notice that this microphone has muddy low mids frequency response, in every video I’ve seen, people always remove the frequencies in the 100-200 hz range and somewhere in the 280hz range, in addition to the low cut. I mean, like myself, people notice the boxiness always in the 490 hz range, 145 hz range and 284 hz range for this microphone. But I use it in an untreated situation. The flat frequency response always sounds boxy and unclear to me, like a sound I’m not satisfied out of the box. The most clear and emotional setting for this microphone to me is presence boost, followed by bass rolloff, and the flat setting is last in the row. How does this microphone behave in a treated studio, are the low mids still that nasty and unclear even for female vocals (like woofy artificial bass buildup)? Do you feel like this microphone is more woofy and boxy than even sm57 which is times cheaper?

A lot of this is way over my head, I'm just starting to learn. It's a lot of processing - is this because it's a pop song? Would process a modern rock vocal diffrently? How about a retro-70's-style rock vocal (Whitesnake etc.)? Also I should say that this sounds AMAZING. It's very clean, very mellow, but still very moving! I would LOVE to see more tutorials from you.
@idanlib
@idanlib 4 жыл бұрын
Also, could you share what kind of vocal editing and/or tuning was done on the vocal before the processing? It's really spot-on pitch-wise. Even though I can hear the singer is great (she is, I say so as voice teacher and as a singer myself), we're all human and today's mics pick up everything. How many takes were combined to create the final one? Would love to hear anything you're willing to share. Thanks!

@davidterry8252
@davidterry8252 4 жыл бұрын
The settings you use are totally dependent on the sound you're trying to achieve. So you should start by deciding what it is you want it to sound like then adjust the eq, compression, and other effects to achieve that sound. That's what my approach would be!

Yes also I have recorded one mic into a small old PV amp. Miked the amp on purpose with a $20.00 radio shack mic. Turned destitution on high and played same drum pattern twice. Pan left and right and you get a drum machine loop sound except I really played on drums. My song on www.soundcloud.com/Matt Mendians Please Comply is how I did that.

Sodiumglowmusic thanks, cus i always felt that my vocals only got worse with verb and delays, thats cus i always sent til to the master without it being proccessed as a whole, same with the parrarell bus, used to parrarrell only the dry signal and not the vocals as a whole, this helped me sooooo much so i am interested in seeing how you process the drums
