While out driving earlier today, I was listening to my local Dallas classical music station WRR-FM, and there was a discussion of whether iit is considered polite or rude for an audience to applaud after each movement of a symphony. The modern interpretation is that it is rude. However, in Beethoven's day, at the premiere of his Symphony #7, the audience was so enraptured by the second movement that it broke out into so strong an applause that an immediate encore was demanded. How appropriate that I ran into this KZbin piece by the MIT Symphony Orchestra with the second movement of Beethoven's #7! It's such marvelous music. I remember Margaret MacVicar (who prided herself in being called Margaret MacVicar, not as "Professor MacVicar") as a person of amazing kindness. Although I only took freshman physics, she recognized me. She was always smiling-with her eyes too. And yes, UROP made MIT choose that school. So sad she died so young.

This is an amazing project! I have just sent an email to President Reif to voice my support. In addition, I am deeply touched by our own MIT tradition and the way we honestly deal with historical facts moving forward as a community. Bravo! I am personally interested in the Chinese Railroad Workers in North America Project (at Stanford) and I do believe perhaps that MIT and Stanford (and Harvard) may even have some collaboration moving forward in these important projects.

Very glad to see my alma mater (I am Class of '66) do this project (better late than never).

Observing, talking, doing things with people, connecting, processing information, gathering information, exploring. An anthropologist basically studies everything from immigrants and their adaptation to a new country which is a very complicated topic nowadays, as well as something as peculiar as how to make cheese. The important thing is doing field work and be able to understand the particular situation and how it has an impact in our society and in the world...
