Police today are almost as brutal & corrupt as in Ned's day (who will ever forget Melbourne lockdowns. Old lady bashed to ground & pepper sprayed, pregnant woman in pyjamas arrested in home etc) Image back in the 1870s when the law WAS the big landowners who had the police & judges in their pockets. A poor man had no chance. Ned was a product of this & his hatred of the 'traps' grew with every outrage. The fact is a Royal Commission into the 'affair' was conducted in early 1881 they recommended the sacking of two police Superintendents, a police inspector being retired & several other officers reduced in rank. The charge of attempted murder of constable Fitzpatrick by Ned & his brother Dan was found to be false. Fitzpatrick was later dismissed from the police force on several counts & that he 'could not be trusted out of sight & never did his duty'. The police in the bush were notorious for corruption & lagging innocent men for monetary reward from rich land owners who lost livestock. Any man would do so long as the police got their reward. Many innocent people spent years locked up in hell holes while the police conducted themselves like tyrants - which was also raised in the Royal Commission & was one of Ned's grievances. Just look at the police shooting peaceful innocent protesters in Victoria recently & the brutal way they conducted themselves. Nothing has changed in Victoria. I had the privilege of speaking with Ern Straughair from Benalla in 1991. This man knew Jim Kelly, Ned's brother. He told me that during the police stakeout on the Kelly homestead, Kate Kelly was raped by the police when she went for a horse ride. She was 15. She went to Melbourne for a 'holiday' (abortion) & at 35, committed suicide due to the trauma.

The Victorian government rejected almost all the RC recommendations. 1. Chief Commissioner Standish retired 6 months before the RC even began. The report that it ended his career is incorrect. 2. No senior police careers were ended. Supt Hare & Nicolson were re-instated and a few weeks later were both promoted to be Police Magistrates. 3. Supt Sadleir was recommended to be removed to the bottom of the seniority list. He retained his position. 4. Det Ward was recommended to be removed to the bottom of the seniority list. He was moved back one position. 5. Sgt Steele was recommended to be broken to the ranks. He retained his rank and position as the OC Wangaratta, and retired many years later. 6. The only police to be dismissed were three police who had been sent to guard Aaron Sherritt at his home. No police officer ever went near Kate Kelly.

You also claim that Ian Jones wrote authoritative books. In fact, he wrote a great deal of made up fiction in his books. For instance, he made up the lie that Ned Kelly intended to start a republic in NE Victoria. It was total and complete nonsense like so much of his made up lies. There are at least 300 factual errors in Jones book. If you want authoritative books on Ned Kelly, read the following. The Kelly Gang Unmasked - Ian MacFarlane. Ned Kelly - A Lawless Life - Ned Kelly Selectors Squatters and Stock Thieves - Stringybark Creek - all by Dr Doug Morrissey. All well researched and these books tell the truth, not like the nonsense previously presented as truth that was in fact, complete fiction.

Thank you Steve Thompson for upload. For anyone interested in Ned Kelly/Bushrangers and history, there is now a series on Amazon Prime (and I am sure on other outlets) called 'LAWLESS' that rewrite history by doing investigations into the full story, archeologic dig, and re-enacting some of the scenes. They use cutting edge tools, land scanners, etc to map out the area and it has been found that a couple of the sites (one being the scraggybark area) have been wrongly marked and in that area, the killing of the policemen was actually where the picnic benches are. Fantastic series for all bushranger fans.

You have got a lot wrong here Steve. 1. You claim fiercely loyal to his family. He gave up Harry Power, who one could claim was part of his family, and he did not give his mother one penny after robbing banks of a huge a mount of money to get her out of gaol. Loyal to family. Naaaaaaa 2. So loyal to his mates, that he had one murdered. Aaron Sherritt. 3. The family farm did not fail. It simply was not worked. It was much easier to make a living stealing horses and cattle from other poor settlers. 4. Theft was not a way of life to make ends meet. Most settlers in the area worked hard and made a good living. 5. You claim while not setting out to murder. REALLY. He gunned down Lonigan and Scanlan without either of them having a chance to surrender or defend themselves. It was cold blooded murder, and remember he chased Sgt. Kennedy a long way through the bush to kill him too. Your comment is simply NOT TRUE Steve. 6. Steve you claim a lack of violence regarding the hostages at Faithfull's Creek. They were taken at gunpoint and threatened with death if they disobeyed. Kelly put a revolver into the mouth of one hostage who stood up to him and he was threatened with death. That is violence in my view. 7. Ned Kelly did not shout the bar. He provided the hostages with stolen booze, nothing more nothing less. 8. The answer to Ned Kelly being a villain or a hero, is obvious. He was no hero, he was just a serious criminal who in the end got his just deserts. Steve, if you are going to do presentations, how about telling truth and not the mythological rubbish that this video contains.

If you read the particulars of that case when he was before the court for being an accomplice of mine, you'll remember that Ned was discharged because the police had no evidence to call. It's as clear as daylight to me. The police evidence alone would have convicted Ned. But he had promised to give me away if they let him off, and accordingly he kept his word. There is a technicality everyone has missed, regarding the police that were shot - if one considers the law at the time, it was a capital offence to steal horses, a hanging offense, and those police has stolen Kelly's horses when he had been locked up on an earlier occasion. Just as a policeman robbing a bank s no longer a policeman, just a bank robber, so too those police were horse thieves guilty of a capital offence, so Kelly merely carried out the lawful sentence that was accurate for the time in Law. at best he was guilty of impersonating a police officer. and that is entirely legally correct, the officers had there been no corruption would have been executed anyway.

Thanks Steve, I have been to many of these sights and I have always been interested in the Kelly story. It was also a time when Catholic Irish were not liked by the English Protestants. So poor old Ned was picked on by the beginning. He wasn’t an angel but certain circumstances, one being the miss treatment of his sister and mother that led Ned to rebel against the Police and the shooting at Stringing Bark Creek. I suppose he has a soft spot in many Australian hearts and he is a representation of how the law treated people of his status. So Ned May have been a outlaw but he is an iconic man who will always be remembered.
