The uploader is an angel for this. I remember this builder. Yes, they did do a lot big starter type of homes.

There were just too many malls in Houston. There’s no need to have so many malls so close to each other. Literally in the 90s you could drive 15-25 minutes and arrive to the next mall. West oaks to Katy mills, town country to memorial, northwest to galleria, Sharp town to gallleria. All these malls are not far from each other.

Some of the things in this commercial, like the voiceover, music track, the font of the word "superstore" and the foggy showroom introduction were previously used in the Circuit City grand opening in Louisville commercial from the year before.

I'm surprised that mall is still there because most malls are dead these days. The San Jacinto Mall over in Baytown, TX closed, became abandoned, & got demolished two years ago. Back in the days before internet, i-phones, & Amazon, malls were popular shopping destinations.

Sharpstown was one of the more interesting malls in terms of the interior design. It actually had 2 floors. It also had the best record store, Cactus Records and Tapes.

It appears this was filmed after the first remodel I can remember. In my first visits as a kid, there were several fountains and they were all white. Then they added the brown tile work seen in this ad. They've remodeled several times since then.

Wow, so many good memories at that mall in the 80s and early 90s. I spent many years growing up in Alief. That mall was one of the best hang-out locations for high-schoolers back in my day. When Alief went to hell, the mall followed. I still work in the area and have witnessed the decline of the entire area. Low rent apartments and metro bus routes coming to your area tend to do that. It's really sad. Most middle/upper-class residents of Alief back in the 80s ended up moving out to Sugar Land or Katy in the 90s - 2000s to escape the rampant crime that began plaguing the area. Anyone remember Brothers Pizzeria? That was my go-to food location in the mall. Their New York Style pizza was AWESOME! I just learned recently that they are still around but in a different location (hwy 6 north of i-10) and they have another location in Cypress as well. Definitely going to check them out when i'm in the area.

That building was demolished and an all new building went up. In early 2024 Layne’s Chicken opened. I went there once. If they would stay open late they could compete with Raising Cane”s. Their food was average but as good as Cane’s which has cars lined up around the building and onto the street late at night.

This is definitely NOT the Northwest Mall I frequented in the 60's and 70's as a kid. JCPenney and Foley's were the two 'anchor' stores. JCPenney was simply known as Penneys at the time. Foley's was spelled foley's with a giant lower-case 'f', and had pre-formed blue canopies in each of the exterior entry arches. At the center of the mall was a huge arboretum made of brick, stone, and tile that stepped down into a fountain area. Thanks to the skylight roofs, the arboretum and much of the mall itself was full of live plants. You could hear the fountain pretty much from each end of the mall. Every Christmas, starting just after Thanksgiving and going through New Years, they would turn off the fountain and build a huge Poinsettia Christmas tree over it, and the entire mall echoed with Christmas tunes. There was also the Northwest 4 Theaters that was a separate building out by the freeway. The floors were dug out of the ground and sloped down to the screen (not steps) as you walked into each theater as compared to theaters now where you walk back up steps to your seats. The Northwest and Almeda Malls were 'twins'. Here's a link with pics from Almeda... southbelthouston . blogspot . com/2014/03/almeda-mall . html This is really sad to see it like this but at least I still have my memories of how great it once was. I could talk about it for hours.

I lived in the Bear Creek area and my family dined there many many times. The closest one to me now was in Deerbrook Mall but it closed last year sadly. Thank you for archiving Houston Retail commercials, I was 9 in 1986 and I can still remember so many of these long gone businesses. 👍👍👍

Thanks for this. I like the music. Was there originally a live narration? I would have enjoyed additional content, but the choice of using captions rather than voice was a good one. It was easy to read, informative, and not annoying. Luckily I liked the music.
