🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 05:11 💼 Karita Patel discusses the lack of education when it comes to insurance in the healthcare industry and aims to educate viewers on the different health insurance options available. 08:10 💼 Karita Patel provides an example of a family of four plan from the Obamacare marketplace, showcasing high monthly premiums and deductibles. 10:02 🏥 Private insurance offers nationwide coverage, unlike Obamacare marketplace plans which are mostly limited to certain doctors and locations. 11:13 🏥 Private insurance plans are health-based and require medical underwriting, meaning not everyone may qualify. 11:51 🏥 Private insurance plans can be significantly cheaper than Obamacare marketplace plans, depending on individual circumstances. 12:08 🏥 Three options for providing health insurance to employees are: SHOP (Obamacare marketplace plans for employees), private insurance, and working with a local agent. 23:32 💼 Sale to private equity may not make sense for everyone, but understanding the differences between firms is important for those considering it as an option. 24:01 💰 Private equity firms are investing a significant amount of money in buying optometry- [25:](https.be/Bq_obGPz1pY?t=6s) 🏢 Private equity sponsors manage a pool of capital and focus on industries where they have a successful track record. 27:05 📈 High valuations in the public equity sector have led to more money being invested in private equity, with $561 billion raised in 2017 alone. 27:46 💼 Private equity firms aim to acquire companies, make operational improvements, and drive accelerated growth through acquisitions. [29:25youtu.beq_obGP1pY?t=5s) 🏢ing with a solid management is key for successful equity integration and consolidation. 37:40 💼 Optical retail faces pressures such as stagnant reimbursements and increasing overhead costs. 44:44 📝 Pros of creating regional brands include relieving management responsibilities, maintaining local brand identity, reduced overhead, centralized functions, increased negotiating power, and opportunities for better management through integrated systems. 46:08 💼 Lack of centralized control and systems integration in the "nothing is done" model can make it difficult to implement positive changes in each practice. 53:38 💰 It's more important to consider the amount of money you will walk away with when selling your practice, rather than the multiple you were paid. 54:05 💼 When selling to private equity, your total salary needs to be separated into what the business pays you as an optometrist, and what you receive as a business owner. As an employee of the practice, your annual income as a business owner will go away. 54:33 💼 Some purchase agreements require the seller to stay on as an employee for a certain period of time. This is important to consider if you plan to retire after the sale. 54:47 💰 Consider the investment opportunity offered by the private equity group. Some may require you to invest a percentage of your proceeds back into the group. 55:14 🗺️ Selling to a private equity group may impact your practice's culture, including changes in branding, product lines, and relationships with suppliers. 56:13 🏥 Selling to a private equity group may result in changes to patient care protocols that you may or may not agree with. Understand the impact on patient care before making a decision. 58:50 🗺️ Selling to a national brand may result in the loss of your practice's legacy in the community. Consider if maintaining the legacy and reputation you built in the community is important to you. 01:02:47 💼 When selling to a private equity firm, the amount earned as an optometrist must be separated from the amount earned as a business owner. This distinction is important and can cause confusion for sellers. 01:06:01 🧾 Consider different scenarios and the potential compensation over a period of time when deciding whether to sell to private equity or another OD or to keep the practice and hire an associate. 01:09:22 💼 Private equity firms typically target practices with a value of $3 million or more, but smaller practices can still benefit from a higher valuation compared to individual buyers. 01:10:05 💼 Building a network of optometric practices can increase the value of a smaller practice to private equity firms. 01:10:49 💼 The process of selling to private equity involves signing a letter of intent, an exclusivity period, and undergoing various work streams such as financial assessment, medical billing assessment, synergy assessment, provider assessment, reimbursement assessment, market competitive assessment, and real estate assessment. 01:14:19 💼 Practice brokers specializing in private equity deals can help sellers navigate the process and potentially increase the sale price, but sellers need to consider the fees and the alignment of the buyer with their overall needs. 01:17:22 🛡️ The length of the diligence period and post-close integration in private equity acquisitions can vary, but the sooner integration occurs, the better for all parties involved, as it reduces uncertainty and allows for a quicker return to normalcy. 01:18:35 💼 After the majority of large practices are sold to private equity, the next phase will be the consolidation of private equity firms, where funds are put together to create an even larger network. 01:20:45 💼 When selling to private equity, it is important to research and choose a partner that aligns with your needs and wants, which may not always be the firm offering the highest monetary offer. 01:26:53 💼 Cleaning up and accurately preparing financials for a practice can increase its value during a private equity buyout. 01:29:01 💼 Wade, the speaker, offers services to help optometrists with bookkeeping and financials for business growth and communication. 01:32:20 💼 Good bookkeeping is emphasized as crucial for any future sale, whether to private equity or another optometrist. 01:34:09 💼 The longevity of private equity activity and high multiples in optometry remains to be seen, with experts noting it as an evolving landscape. 01:35:04 💼 Private equity pricing in optometry is currently at extraordinary levels, but it is uncertain how long it will remain that way. 01:35:48 💼 As consolidators begin to consolidate and cherry-pick the market, pricing is expected to come down, which may not be favorable for doctors looking to sell. 01:36:43 💼 Amid uncertainties in the optometry space, including potential threats from the internet and changing sales dynamics, now may be a good time to sell for doctors planning to practice for more than 10 years. 01:37:38 💼 Multiple opportunities exist for selling to consolidators like MyEyeDr, with potential for high equity payouts and potential for future IPOs. 01:49:02 💼 Private equity groups may require sellers to reinvest a portion of their proceeds as equity, which can provide additional buy-in and potential for future financial gains. 01:49:45 💼 The value of equity units can increase over time as the private equity group grows and the entire company becomes more valuable. 01:51:11 💼 Investing in equity allows sellers to get in on the ground floor of an investment opportunity that they couldn't access in the public markets. 01:54:07 💼 The potential return on equity can vary depending on the private equity group, with historical returns ranging from two times to four to five times the investment. 01:55:51 💼 A large practice is typically considered to be around $5 million in gross revenue, although valuation also depends on other factors such as size, profitability, and location. 01:54:36 💼 Sellers should ask questions about the equity portion of the deal, such as the percentage they have to invest, the cost of that capital, and the potential returns. 01:55:22 💼 Taking a little bit of equity can be beneficial for sellers, as it allows them to be part of the potential upside and future profitability of the practice. 02:00:04 💼 Private equity firms can leverage their size to increase profitability by negotiating better deals with suppliers and receiving back-end rebates, making the practice more valuable than to other potential buyers. 02:05:22 💼 Having a practice manager and maintaining a family-like atmosphere can be a positive outcome of a private equity deal. 02:12:19 💼 Private equity in optometry is similar to other healthcare professions such as physical therapy, dermatology, and dentistry, where acquisitions are common, offering choice and power to practice owners. 02:13:00 💼 Private equity can provide solutions to some pain points in private practice, such as expensive equipment and reimbursement challenges, allowing optometrists to focus on their professional skills and be creative. 02:15:22 💼 There will always be a place for private practice optometry, particularly in specialized care or high-end practice models. 02:16:34 💼 The rise of private equity in optometry is similar to what has happened in the pharmacy market with larger companies dominating while independent pharmacies still thrive in niche areas. 02:19:49 💼 The user experience and brand image are essential in improving patient care and attracting customers. Looking at successful service providers in other industries can provide insights for improvement. 02:23:44 💼 Having experienced professionals, such as consultants and lawyers, can make the private equity process more efficient and successful. We talk about it throughout the webinar, but I'd sum it up by saying this: Decide who you want your specific audience to be (e.g. high end shoppers if you have a boutique optical or myopia management patients or vision therapy patients) and invest in marketing to them. Marketing can be expensive and not a guarantee of return by any means, but to get out in front of your prospective patients, you have to invest in your practice. Are you currently using Anagram?

Love that you are giving away copies of that book entitled Financial Freedom. This was a great question and answer session. It's nice to hear about someone elses journey in learning and working in real estate.
