Tunbridge Wells West to Eridge and beyond and to Lewes and Brighton (and Victoria) should have remained open. There was a time when back in the early 1960s one could travel from Tunbridge Wells to virtually anywhere on the Southern Region and yet today rail travel from Tunbridge Wells is restricted to Hastings in one direction and London via Tonbridge in the other. The Beeching cuts went way too far!

Loved this video and the next one. My grandad was a lad telegraphist at Upwey and Easton. His dad was a ticket inspector at Weymouth. They would have known these drivers and firemen. William Didcock and his son, William or Bill were their names. William jnr used to ride his bike from Upwey to Portland every day he was rotored into work. This was in the mid 1930’s.

Glad you enjoyed the video. Sadly I don’t have any further photos of the building of the New Guildford line but noticed today (viewing from Yorkie’s bridge) they are relaying part of the track today.

Great video. I've been trying to find out information about the old Guildford station, for a project I'm working on, and while I have found quite a few good photos on Flickr, you've added quite a few here that I've never seen before, and your commentary what all the things are is very helpful, as I am just about too young to remember the old station (I was born in 82).

Thanks Mark, glad that you've found it useful for your project. Local Historian David Rose and I are conducting a walkabout around Guildford Station and what was the old steam depot (including Yorkie's Bridge) on Sunday 22nd September at 10.00. We have a couple of places left if you're interested?

Thank you so much Geoff for all your time and effort on recording all of your photos and efforts in saving them for prosperity, thanks must also go to all the other friends of yours who gave so unselfishly for your compilations .Was that the first time a Royal scot class had visited Guildford ? Surely it must have been rare back in the day . Thank you again Geoff for such lovely memories.

the photo of Guildford station at about 02:30 wasn't taken in 1967, the vehicles appear to be Later, they are are L and V reg at my guess so they are mid-late 1970s vehicles

@@andrewwoodgate3769 ahhh bless. the beeching report (he had no power) was basically sat on until 1965. Enter labour who then wholesale slashed the lines, the madness only stopped under heath ( that hurts me to say ) in 1970 Labour all the way and they closed hundreds of pits in that time frame and blair saved none in the 90's. use real facts please not wiki lefty garbage

My Dad (1936 born) started as a cleaner at Southport then eventually moved to London and then became a fireman at Willesden and few other places… eventually passing out as a driver then moving to Bedford and ended up retiring in 1999…He doesn’t have internet access, and I have just had the pleasure of his company for a week as he now lives near Plymouth… He thoroughly enjoyed all of your videos and absolutely made my day as he was chuckling away to some of your stories. Amazing work! Thank you 😊

That was good money in those days. When I started my apprenticeship at Hawker Siddeley, Kingston, in 1971 my weekly wage was £7.51 rising a little each year but on a fixed scale. Inflation was going mad at the time and because of the fixed scale of wages I was earning less than the first year lads when I had done my 4 years!!!

I was a secondman at Salisbury, and Fred was a Salisbury man. When we went up for driving(1978), Fred took me for driving( practical) . He knew that as a Salisbury secondman, I'd already done loads of driving, so as for teaching the practical side of things, he just sat there in the chair on the other side of the cab, and let you get on with it.

I trainspotted at Dorking North in the 70s and early 80s, but only ever got to Effingham Jn one rather unfortunate evening coming home late from work in 1990 very drunk and some random guy offered me a spliff and I had a drag, threw up, and fell asleep. Meaning I didn’t change at either Epsom, Ashtead or Leatherhead. Cue 1am phone call to parents at the phone box by the railway bridge. So I saw it in the dark with a sore head 😂 You probably still knew some of the guys at Dorking though. Fred, Mick, Simon, and manager Mr Dixon. Oh wow!! 6:11 I can still hear that thing!! And the hope it brought of the correct train…..

Guildford locos looked so varied. I grew up coming to Guildford for the cinema in the 70s then school in early/mid 80s (from Dorking), and looking at the long shots and the few that feature the station, it hadn’t changed much from this set. Guildford had the yellow canopy and green painted iron canopy struts the same as Dorking North did, so even though Dorking North was demolished in 1980 it always felt really familiar.
