Nice review. I think this is an excellent movie in so many ways. It is well written, the acting (especially Daniel Craig and Drew Starkey) is superb. The cinematography and music are phenomenal. It definitely represents the lives and the psychology of gay men at two very different stages of self-acceptance in the early '50s. So, why is it so divisive? Why do some love it and some hate it? I think it has to do with a few things. First, there are people who are homophobes and hate queer movies. Not sure why they went (LOL--yes, I am pretty sure, at least). Second, it has a lot of metaphors in it. People's brains tend to be dichotomous as to whether they are linear thinkers and like movies in which everything is spelled out for them OR they are less concrete and more associative thinkers and like the many interpretations of metaphors. Of course, it's really a continuum, but these are the extremes. People at the first extreme (more concrete thinkers) would hate this movie and not understand its true meaning. Those at the other extreme probably would love it. As you say, it's the story of a gay man in middle-age (former military) who lives in Mexico. He's a drug addict, which likely represents the misery he experiences as a gay man in the '50s. He says he's in Mexico because his drug habit would get him imprisoned in the U.S. Remember, though, this was the era of McCarthyism, and his homosexuality also may have gotten him imprisoned--as a "communist"). So, he lives in Mexico and is seeking a meaningful gay relationship. Unfortunately, all he finds is superficial hook-ups. He sees and becomes infatuated with Eugene, a younger man who is struggling with his queer identity and is unable to accept it. Yet, he is drawn to Lee, the older man. This sets the stage for what is to occur. The part that I think really confuses people and is off-putting for them is Chapter 3 with the telepathy augmenting drug in South America. This is the metaphor for the struggle that Eugene is going through, knowing that he is attracted to men, specifically Lee, and denying his own homosexuality. Lee "hears" the thoughts of Eugene during their drug intoxication, "I AM NOT QUEER!" Ultimately, Eugene runs away in an effort to escape his sexuality. And Lee lives on alone, lonely, and grieving over the loss of Eugene, and dies a miserable death. Whie the movie has a bit of romance; it really is a tragedy of two gay men who are at very different stages of their lives and unable to connect in the early '50s. That is my assessment of the movie.

I finally watched it and I don't know if my expectations were too high due to the hype, but I really liked it. Didn't love it. I thought Mikey Madison was very good, Oscar Nomination worthy even, but not great.

19:00 I actually think Balloon is placed well. Coming after Like him a very heavy track Tyler chooses to pick himself up with a bubly fun track that still has excellent bars and a excellent feat verse. It is a big tonal shift which i understand but i dont think its tonal whiplash and it definitely makes sense with its track placement. Very encouraging song. D O N T. S T O P

I liked it. It was nostalgic, very accurate portrayal of the 80's. Also, helped me see who Roy Cohn was because I was too young to know about him. Warhol shows up twice. Loved it.

Okay... I'm 8 minutes in and I'm still wondering why I would want to watch it. Sounds like a stereotypical son of a stereotypical real estate mogul having stereotypical problems that a stereotypical son of a stereotypical real estate mogul would have that is also a narcissist, and 8 minutes in such horror movies I'd like at least some casualties. But yeah, didn't care, still don't care. If I want a movie about stereotypes being stereotypical I will look for any horror that plays out in a cabin in the woods. I wouldn't waste that time on something that isn't entertaining.

Well I guess what I mean is this story is surprisingly typical for someone who everyone views is atypical. The story of Trump's rise isn't all that new but it's more the fact that this person became our president and might be again, that makes it so interesting to see. This is also a history that Trump has tried to cover up for a LONG time now so I think it's important that people see it.

A few weeks ago, I saw The Substance at a movie theatre, and I found it strange and bizarre, then if you're going to see the movie, don't eat anything as the movie has disturbing scenes. So, that's why I didn't want to eat pop corn, while watching the film.

Many good points, and one of the better reviews I've seen. I saw it recently, and since I'm old, and have read a lot about Trump, and before he was president knew quite a bit about Roy Cohn, I was surprised how much influence he had on Trump, what a huge help he was to Trump in helping Trump take over from his father, at a time his father was showing early stages of dementia. I always thought of Trump's father as having the biggest influence, but Cohn really provided that surrogate father role, and helped Trump in significant ways. As shown in the film, ironically, had Trump listened to Cohn, he could have avoided the missteps that led to his first bankruptcies. Cohn warned him that he was over-leveraged, should finish Trump Tower, take a breather, before going into so much debt building his first casino. Unable to be accepted by NY's old money social circles, I think Trump saw the casino scene as an exciting way to meet celebrities, and the glitz and the glamor of it was his style. He thought he would be rolling in the money, robbing the dupes who gamble. I lived in NYC in the 1980s, so I liked the film for that part, too. I never met Trump, of course, but friends and I used to talk about his projects, like Trump Tower and his casino, and laugh at his TV appearances, because he was such a unique blowhard, of shallow and ridiculous at the same time. For me, it is horrifying and still unbelievable that he has divided the country and is a threat to democracy. Even if Kamala wins, Trump will try to start a civil war. I wish this film could help, but Trumpers will not see it and so far it is tanking at the box office. It could get watched in the future though, if, for example, Trump tries to start a civil war.

Hi Ray, there's something that I don't understand. Francis Ford Coppola has had decades to rally his wealth and entertainment connections to hone and refine his ideas for Megalopolis into a coherent story. Mr. Coppola has access to resources that I can't even imagine, yet no effort was made to "rationalize" all the puzzle pieces into a well-crafted movie. What makes a great movie Great, is a filmmaker who knows what Not to include in the narrative. The excess baggage left on the cutting room floor is the real movie magic. Excellent review, Ray.

I feel that if the movie had been more like the crime thrillers of the 90s, and omitted the supernatural elements, and Nic Cage's performance had been more subdued and quiet, this film could have been perfect in my eyes. I know Perkins' vision was to make the audience think it was going to be another Seven or Silence of the Lambs and then pull the rug out from under, but I do think it was a missed opportunity. For me, there was simultaneously too much going on and not enough coherent lore/explanation. I believe the aim was to do something different, but tbh horror movies with Satanic/demonic elements are a dime a dozen these days. I feel this was a missed opportunity for the Longlegs character to stand on his own and become a new serial killer horror icon, a long the lines of Buffalo Bill.

Great video! I totally agree-the actors were fantastic. However, I felt the plot didn't quite measure up to the film's aesthetic and cinematography. I found myself constantly waiting for more, but once the initial scare of 'oooh, scary pale Nicolas Cage' was over, that was pretty much it for me.
