The version with vocals is already insane, but this just unveils a whole new layer of artistry. On the surface the song is only piano and vocals, but there are so many intricacies of sound effects and ambience that really play into the song's feel. And the way the echoes of vocals build up texture really adds to the celestial feeling. The expressiveness and mixing of the piano---the way the lower octaves themselves carry the bass of the whole song, it really causes you to rely on only the human soul for contrast and emotion. And at 2:46, the sub-bass drop, that just feels like a slowdown right before launching into the next heart-wrenching moment. If you listen really closely there's this sweeping, almost brassy/cymbal sound at 2:54, which, the first time I heard it, instantly brought visions of fantastic, sparkling nebulae to mind. A flash of beauty amongst pain---well, beauty is constructed so...I guess awareness? Perspective? What is it? I can never get my hands on it, this fleeting sensation that longs to be described but only loses power with each additional word I type. It's this magical...almost spiritual, grandiose realization at 2:54, the kind that would make your eyes widen and make you gasp. And you can't exactly hear it in the non-instrumental version, but this is the sort of hidden beauty that I wish I had the discipline to put effort into in my own productions. Not even to mention all the almost white-noise sounding stuff happening around 3:20. Then at 3:24 you start to hear this shiny, gold sound, like a gold curtain rod hanging up velvet drapes. And all the little static-y noises and the random synths that build that more...universal sound. It's just pure sound, no character or instrument---It is the Universe. The muffled sounds of fire crackling? It's just perfect, I'm so glad she made this absolute masterpiece. This is also all based on my synesthetic experience of the song.
