Great video, Tony. These are not easy repair jobs but the detail you show in these videos really helps the DIY'er! I have to do the EGR cooler replacement - and I'm wondering if I should go ahead and replace the turbo also since I'll have everything off. I've got about 100k miles on my '06, but not sure what the life of these turbos are.
@TonysDIYGarageАй бұрын
If it’s still running good I wouldn’t my turbo looked pretty original and there wasn’t any documentation of it being replaced from the previous owner. It’s safe to say mine lasted about 200k miles.

Is it possible to replace only the last part (the hose) without removing the plastic pipe? 🙂 or i have to remove it all anyway?

No your gotta get it all out it’s to tight in there to do anything. Once out you can remove the rubber house

I have no soot, but a hell of a hiss when the turbo should be doing its work 1.5k-2.5k RPM. Im pretty sure i have a hole in the turbo intercooler line. Its definitely lower power than it should be, but im guessing thats mainly bc the turbo is essentially disconnected. This video essentially just told me i should get a mechanic to do it as i probably dont have enough tools to even get enough stuff out of the way to even start work on the pipe itself. Thanks!

My vw randomly goes into limp mode. I’m thinking it’s this or the turbo. What were your symptoms?
@TonysDIYGarage8 ай бұрын
Low power, hissing, black smoke. Basically all the turbo symptoms, some people here a noise coming from the intake plastic hose by the fans on the top side.

Definitely timing chain related. I would say it sounds like the main guide broke, slipped, and is being chewed up by the chain. You need to pull the front cover and replace everything. Get OEM parts.

I just need to get that coolant pipe below the intercooler pipe off. YT search never turned up this video or any other one that didn't skip over the hard parts. I had to use Brave search of all things and that's how I found this video. But now I see what I have to do to get to it. I guess I can go ahead and change the seal on the intercooler pipe, too, since I did all the other ones already.

Have you mechanic double check all timing guides and timing chain play. It should be tight. This noise is either chain slap from a stretched chain( what I have ) or skipped timing. These engines are dual overhead cam and don’t have lifters( they have tappets; little buckets that push the valves down) these are very simple engines. They have 5 or 4 guides for the chain. Three are auto adjusting based off oil pressure and commonly fail. The noise sounds like primary timing chain slap from a blown tensioner
@Dien6Amie Жыл бұрын
That is the timing chain noise.
@2841orlando Жыл бұрын
Correct
@Righteousness323 Жыл бұрын
Any updates on what it was ?? Mine was doing the exact same noise, mechanic said it was no big deal 3 months ago. Just last weekend the engine blew, it made a hole on the bottom near the oil pan, supposedly a piston came out threw there. Now that im watching your video Im thinking that noise was most likely related to what happened to the engine.
@TonysDIYGarage Жыл бұрын
Yeah timing chain/ guide nose caused by a bad oil pump or pressure by a clogged cat. Ended up selling the truck as is since a new cat in Cali is worth more than the truck.

@n00blike Жыл бұрын
I would fix the battery terminal and temporarily switch to a thicker oil. If the thicker oil changes the noise than it can be something inside the engine. Also look at the area near the exhaust manifold, might be an exhaust leak.
@kyleohara1949 Жыл бұрын
had to replace back in November, was cracked (tons of black smoke and boost cuts) wasn't too bad of a replacement. For anyone else looking to do this repair/replacement, remove the transmission cooler and lines out as one assembly. This will limit fluid loss and mess vs taking the hoses off individually.

Had the same symptoms a shop had diagnosed it as a bad a turbo. Thanks for the input.
