Denver, John and John, Elton, neither of which are their birth names, hold down the top two spots on the chart as Roberta Flack posts a challenge with a nice move from #6 to #3. Paper Lace have their first Top Ten record in the United States as “The Night Chicago Died” flies up to #5. Blue Magic, after two weeks at #11 sneaks into the Top Ten for the first time with “Sideshow”. Paul Anka now has his biggest hit since “Eso Beso (That Kiss!)” peaked at #19 in 1962. English pop-rock group Fancy takes their remake of “Wild Thing” by The Troggs into the Top 40 at #32. Eric Clapton has his second solo Top 40 hit as “I Shot The Sheriff” jumps up to #34. He hit #18 in 1970 with “After Midnight” and made the Top Ten with “Layla” as a member of Derek And The Dominoes. He also had hits with Yardbirds and Cream. James Brown has his 42nd Top 40 hit in fourteen years with “My Thang” at #37. It’s been almost four years since Dionne Warwicke hit the Top 40 but she’s back in with her duet with Spinners, who have their seventh Top 40 hit in a row with “Then Came You” at #38. It’s Warwicke’s 23rd Top 40 listing and the Spinners’ 10th. Billy Preston has had three Top 40 solo hits and one with The Beatles, and all of them have hit the Top 5. His fifth entry in the Top 40, “Nothing From Nothing” is now at #39. Writer, producer, musician and singer Curtis Mayfield hops on the latest trend in martial arts as his “Kung Fu” chops at #40. The last few songs by Barry White, his Love Unlimited Orchestra and his production group of women Love Unlimited have all failed to be major hits. The Walrus Of Love comes back strong as “Can’t Get Enough Of Your Love, Babe” blasts onto the Hot 100 at #51. Stevie Wonder debuts on the Hot 100 with his 34th entry in eleven years as the politically charged “You Haven’t Done Nothin’” is at #93. Rolling Stones score their 32nd Hot 100 hit with “Its Only Rock ‘N Roll (But I Like It)” at #94. British novelty pop group Wombles have their first chart appearance with “Wombling Summer Party” at #95. Frank Sinatra continues to chart and his newest single “You Turned My World Around” slips in at #97. And Englishman Cat Stevens releases a remake of the old Sam Cooke classic “Another Saturday Night” and slides in at #100. The original made it up to #10 in 1963. The number one album this week was “Caribou” by Elton John. Next week...a singer ties one chart record and creates another. A second group from Sweden hits the Top Ten. And a folk singing legend remakes one of his own songs after he teams up with a rock group. Happy August! Stay smart! Read the chart!

John Denver scores his second number one record in a row as his tribute to his wife at the time, Ann Martell, entitled “Annie’s Song” slides to the top of the Hot 100. It’s a rare event when the title of the song is not mentioned in the lyrics. The last number one song to do that was “Brother Louie” by Stories in 1973. The sun may be going down for Elton John, but his record is now up to number two. This ties the peak positions of “Daniel” and “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” for the British singer. He’s still looking for his third number one song. Maybe next week. Steely Dan now have their highest charting record as “Rikki, Don’t Lose That Number” is at #5 surpassing their previous best of “Do It Again” which reached #6. Roberta Flack has her fourth Top Ten song (third as a solo artist and one in a duet with Donny Hathaway) as “Feel Like Makin’ Love” makes a nice move from #16 to #6. Dave Loggins, cousin of Kenny, takes his first chart entry into the Top Ten as “Please Come To Boston” also jumps ten places to #9. Jazz-oriented rock group Chicago has had fourteen Top 40 hits and most of them have gone Top Ten. No exception this week as Latin-flavored “Call On Me” takes a nice leap to #10. Blue Magic must like the number eleven. Their song “Sideshow” was at #11 last week, is at #11 this week and has been on the chart for 11 weeks. In one smooth move, Donny Osmond has his sixth Top 40 listing as a solo artist and his sister Marie has her second as their duet “I’m Leaving It (All) Up To You” is now at #32. Paul Anka is rising nicely as “(You’re) Having My Baby” becomes his 26th Top 40 hit and first in over five years. Country singer Billy “Crash” Craddock from Greensboro, North Carolina has his first Top 40 hit with the humorous “Rub It In”. The pairing of two hitmakers, Dionne Warwicke and Spinners produces the highest new entry on the Hot 100 with “Then Came You” at #51. It’s Warwicke’s 34th chart listing and Spinners’ 13th. Ray Stevens follows up his number one “The Streak” with another comical parody as “Moonlight Special” debuts at #90. Lynyrd Skynyrd, originally from Jacksonville, FL, have their first Hot 100 song as “Sweet Home Alabama” makes it on at # 93. Bob Seger, from Dearborn Michigan and raised in Detroit, has his sixth chart hit with “Get Out Of Denver”. His biggest song so far was “Ramblin’ Gamblin’ Man” which peaked at #17 in 1969. And in the base position of #100, Dick Feller appears for the first time with “Makin’ The Best Of A Bad Situation”. These days Feller is known as Deena Kaye Rose, since she came out as a transgender woman. Just another interesting fact in the world of Country Music. The number one album this week was “Caribou” by Elton John. Next week...a Canadian former teen idol has his biggest hit in over a decade. “The Walrus Of Love” comes back strong. And a British Cat hits the chart with a remake of a classic song from the 1960s. My! My! It’s the end of July! And the months fly by!

Righteous Brothers take a big leap within the Top Ten, moving up seven positions to #3. It’s their biggest hit since they hit number one with “(You’re My) Soul And Inspiration” in 1966. “Rock And Roll Heaven”, written by Alan O’Day, was first recorded by pop group Climax, but didn’t make the chart. Climax, if you remember, had a big hit in 1972 called “Precious And Few” which made it to #3. If the Righteous Brothers can replace George McCrae at the top spot, it will be the third song in a row to reach number one starting with the word “Rock”, following “Rock The Boat” and “Rock Your Baby”. Steely Dan is back in the Top Ten with “Rikki, Don’t Lose That Number”. Their only other Top Ten record was “Do It Again”. The Impressions are now at #17 with their current release. It’s their biggest hit since “We’re A Winner” reached #14 in 1968. Canadian band Bachman-Turner Overdrive now have their highest charting hit as “Takin’ Care Of Business” moves up to #20. They previously peaked at #23 with “Let It Ride”. Grand Funk score their seventh Top 40 entry with “Shinin’ On” at #34. Pop and Country singer Jim Stafford joins a very elite group this week as the fourth single from his self-titled album, “Wildwood Weed”, is now a Top 40 record at #35. Only a handful of artists have pulled that off, most recently, Gladys Knight & The Pips, who scored four Top 40 songs from their “Imagination” album. Andy Kim, also from Canada, makes it six Top 40 listings as his biggest hit in quite some time, another “Rock” song, “Rock Me Gently”, jumps up to #36. So far his highest listing as a singer was when he reached #9 with the Ellie Greenwich-Jeff Barry-Phil Spector tune “Baby, I Love You” back in 1969. However Kim co-wrote one the biggest hits of the 1960’s, “Sugar, Sugar”, which animated group The Archies took to number one in 1969. The hits keep coming for Helen Reddy. She takes the Paul Williams’ song “You And Me Against The World” to #37. Its her seventh Top 40 record and sixth in a row...and all of them have made the Top 20. Songwriter and producer Johnny Bristol has a hit on his own as “Hang On In Their Baby” becomes his first Top 40 record at #39. Another soulful songwriter and producer, Don Covay, follows his biggest hit as a singer, “I Was Checkin’ Out She Was Checkin” In”, which peaked at #29 in 1973 with “It’s Better To Have (And Don’t Need)”, now at #67. And another Rhythm & Blues musician, Willie Henderson, moves up with his instrumental “Dance Master” to #73. Tony Burrows may not be a household name in the United States, but he has formed and sung with many studio groups in England, including Brotherhood Of Man, Edison Lighthouse, Pipkins and White Plains. This week his latest creation, First Class, hits the Hot 100 with “Beach Baby” at #74. Another group out of England, London to be exact, Rubettes, debut on the chart with “Sugar Baby Love” at #81. It’s a rare occurrence when the same song by two different artists debut on the chart in the same week but that’s what happens this week as “Rings” appears by Lobo and Reuben Howell at numbers 79 and 86 respectively. Regardless, I’ll bet co-writer of the song Alex Harvey is happy with the royalty checks he’ll be receiving. Harvey also co-wrote Helen Reddy’s number one song “Delta Dawn”. The number one album this week was “Caribou” by Elton John. Next week...a singer from New Mexico, not Colorado, returns to the top. Elton goes up not down. And two recording hitmakers, a woman and a group, team up and make a high debut on the chart. Keep listening to the hits and make them fit as you reach for the beach...🏖

George McCrae takes his first chart record all the way to number one. The last time that happened was when Maureen McGovern did the trick with “The Morning After” in 1973. Although Terry Jacks made it to number one with his first charting solo song, “Seasons In The Sun”, he had appeared on the Hot 100 previously as a member of the Poppy Family. “Rock Your Baby” is the second song in a row to begin with the word “Rock” to reach the summit overtaking “Rock The Boat”. It’s also the second vocalized disco song to reach the top. The song was written by Harry Wayne Casey and Richard Finch, creators of KC & The Sunshine Band, who will begin hitting the chart very soon. John Denver takes a big leap within the Top Ten as “Annie’s Song” moves from #8 to #2, almost assuring him his second number one record in a row. Gladys Knight & The Pips have their fourth Top Five hit in a row as the Curtis Mayfield-written “On And On” from the movie “Claudine” starring Diahann Carroll and James Earl Jones” jumps from #10 to #5. In only its fourth week on the chart, Elton John has taken “Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me” to #6. He too is attempting to have two number one records in a row. The Hollies, who haven’t been in the Top Ten since the number two-peaking “Long Cool Woman (In A Black Dress)” are back as “The Air That I Breathe” is now at #9. It’s their sixth Top Ten listing. Mac Davis is one notch away from his second Top Ten recording as “One Hell Of A Woman” inches up to #11. His “Baby Don’t Get Hooked On Me” made it to number one in 1972. Kenny Loggins’ cousin Dave blasts into the Top 40 with his first chart record. “Please Come To Boston” moves from #41 to #23. The hits roll on for Chicago as “Call On Me” becomes their fourteenth Top 40 hit, now at #27. Latin group War enters the Top 40 for the eighth time but this is their first instrumental as the swaying live recording of “Ballero” is at #36. Even more consistent, Three Dog Night has their 19th Top 40 hit in a row as “Sure As I’m Sittin’ Here” stands at #38. Paper Lace, who only reached #96 with their version of “Billy, Don’t Be A Hero”, make the Top 40 for the first time with “The Night Chicago Died”. Grand Funk, another recording act shooting for two number one songs in a row have the highest debuting record in the chart as “Shinin’ On”, enters at #63. Guitar virtuoso Eric Clapton, who has been with The Yardbirds, Cream and Derek And The Dominos” has his third solo chart entry with “I Shot The Sheriff” at #76. The song was written by Reggae master Bob Marley. Diana Ross & Marvin Gaye have their third duet make the chart with “Don’t Knock My Love”. It’s a remake of the Wilson Pickett recording which reached #13 in 1971. Neil Young is back after a two year absence with “Walk On” at #91. Teen idol at the time Rick Springfield charts for the third time, this outing with “American Girls” at #98. He reached #14 in 1972 with “Speak To The Sky”. And at number 100, ten-year-old Scottish lass of Italian descent Lena Zavaroni debuts with her number one British hit “Ma! (He’s Making Eyes At Me)”. The song was published in 1921, long before Zavaroni was even born and has been recorded by many people including Ray Charles, Bing Crosby and even Annette Funicello. The number one album this week was “Caribou” by Elton John. Next week...Another “Rock” song heads towards the top and yet another becomes a comeback hit of a sorts for a Canadian singer. Jim Stafford joins an elite group. And the same song by two different artists hit the Hot 100 at the same time. In the words of Glenn Frey, “The Heat Is On”. In the words of Little River Band, we need a “Cool Change”! 🥵

The Hues Corporation, a trio of soul singers from California, whose group name was a pun on a “colored” team of followers of one of the richest men in America at the time, Howard Hughes, take a big jump and dance their way to number one. Just like Bo Donaldson & The Heywoods, they move from #6 to #1. The song had a slow start until it became a favorite in the New York City dance clubs and this song was considered by many in the business to be the first vocalized disco recording to hit number one on the Hot 100. Anne Murray has her third Top Ten hit as the Lennon-McCartney written “You Won’t See Me” is now at #9. So far Murray’s highest charting record is “Danny’s Song” which reached #7. Gladys Knight & The Pips keep their hot streak going as “On And On” become their fourth Top Ten release in a row. Elton John scores his eleventh Top 40 hit and eighth in a row as “Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me” rises to #25. Commodores, who will be known for their soulful songs have their first Top 40 entry with an instrumental. “Machine Gun” bullets up to #34. Roberta Flack who hit number one in 1972 with “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” and number one in 1973 with “Killing Me Softly With His Song” has her first charting song of 1974 as “Feel Like Makin’ Love” now enters the Top 40 at #36. Gene Redding continues to climb with his first chart record and now has a Top 40 hit as “This Heart” beats up to #38. Lamont Dozier, one-third of the successful Motown writing and production team of Holland-Dozier-Holland now has his second solo Top 40 hit. Earlier in 1974, he made it to #15 with “Trying To Hold On To My Woman”. Now he’s at #39 with the follow-up, “Fish Ain’t Bitin’”. Southern rock group Wet Willie have their first Top 40 record as “Keep On Smilin’” settles at #40. It’s not fun having a song stall at #41, especially when you’ve never had a Top 40 record yet, but that’s what’s happened to ZZ Top who peaked at #41 last week with “La Grange”. No worries for the Houston, Texas trio. They will be back and bigger and better. Canadian singer/songwriter Paul Anka, who has been charting records since 1957, debuts on the Hot 100 at #82 with what could be his biggest hit in ages, “(You’re) Having My Baby”. Jim Stafford is back with the controversial “Wildwood Weed” at #84. MFSB, who hit number one recently with the instrumental “TSOP” come on at #86 with their follow-up “Love Is The Message”. Soul singer Tyrone Davis debuts at #89 with his latest single “What Comes Up (Must Come Down)” at #89. Brother and sister Donny and Marie Osmond team up and hit the chart with their rendition of “I’m Leaving It (All) Up To You” at #90.
