Honestly after putting in about 17 hours in the reignited trilogy, I actually think I prefer Spyro Hero's tail a little bit more. I never grew up playing platformers so it's only until recently after being bored completely of my typical genre of game that I decided to play platformers. But just like fighting games for me The platformer genre is very hard to get into because I need a few things to hook me. I love Spyro year of the dragon but even my favorite spyro game isn't perfect. The movement in the reignited trilogy is perfect and the graphics are some of the best I have ever seen in a video game, however while I love picking everything up in Spyro it gets a little boring when there's nothing to strive for during your hundred percent run. I 100%ed The first two hub levels and all of it sub levels before I started to realize that the levels were the only thing keeping me hooked. The second game while a lot of people didn't like the backtracking- I actually liked because it gave me a reason to go back to previous levels to do something else in them. Along with the upgrade system giving me something to strive for while going for that fabled 100%. The second game does a lot of things that I think should have stayed in the third one but that's just me. There's just nothing to go for aside from 100% in the trilogy. The only thing you really get is the secret bonus levels and I really do like that concept but having one humongous hurray at the end of the game plus maybe one secret upgrade just isn't enough for me. Heroes tale just does a lot to add to the gameplay while also giving the player something to strive for while going for the hundred percent. The trilogy is fantastic and it does a lot of things right but it doesn't succeed at keeping the players attention if they're not going for a hundred percent. So where Spyro a hero's tail exceeds is giving more things for the player to do. You have 80 eggs to collect that gives you meaningful Rewards during your run, you have the moneybag shop that lets you buy some what useful upgrades and items for all the gems you can't collect- giving those items are reason to exist outside of 100% or One exclusive Secret level and upgrade- and you have massive open-ended levels that let you experiment with how you go about collecting everything to some degree. Plus you don't have quite as many drastic deviations in gameplay and when you do it's varied enough to be interesting to some degree as well. I believe a platformer especially needs to have something to keep the player occupied or to give a player a reason to go collecting things during your 100% run, otherwise it gets stale or the player gets disinterested because there's nothing that they want to go for that they want to have. That's why a lot of modern Platformers always give something like costumes or extra modes or even exclusive levels during a run for those who are going for 100% completion, Crash Bandicoot did something similar in the fact that if you went for 100% completion you were rewarded with secret levels afterwards. I believe each game had five secret levels you could unlock and a bunch of extra goodies along the way that you earned during it- such as the upgrade system that allows you to replay levels and do better- But the original trilogy aside from Spyro 2 doesn't try anything like this. They do try to give variation and one big reward at the end of the game but nothing during that run to persuade the player to keep playing. The hero's tale doesn't perform nearly as good as the trilogy and it is sometimes not polished enough compared to the trilogy, but it does understand that the player's time is important and strives to give a player more goals to achieve during their run of the game. Upgrades, costumes for completing certain challenges, a reason to collect the currency and an attempt at giving that currency a use, a deeper story even if it is full of jokes, and a bunch of secret things you can find if you look for them for those 100% completionists. All in all it's trying its damnedest to give the player a reason to play the game to 100% and it's massive world to explore with a more focus on pure platforming challenges with the side deviations being their own little thing makes this game for me a much better experience as a platformer. But I understand if this thought process isn't for everyone and I do plan on 100% both the trilogy and a Hero's Tail. Spyro is a great franchise and the trilogy is a great platforming journey, but the eurocom game did attempt a lot of interesting ideas and much needed additions to the Spyro formula. And there is a reason it is loved by a lot of people and even those who prefer the trilogy respect it for doing a lot of things correctly. But that's my little two cents, amazing video by the way Toridori.

I'll agree to disagree when it comes to Halvor. I think the warmer purple colours work well for him and of the Peacekeeper Dragons, he's one of the friendlier looking ones and carries a pretty cool hammer. (Though I can imagine that his simplistic design could be forgettable to a few people) Though, to be fair. I feel like the redesigns for some of the dragons are pretty bad. Especially the ones with frog-like faces. Like, I'm sorry. Dragons like Lateef and Gildas look amazing. As for Isaak and Ajax? They should've gone back to the drawing board with them.

I always thought the 3D model of the Phantom Virus was very unsettling so I got scared of this game as a kid and traded it for a copy of a far better game (Nuclear Strike)

So that's what you look like in person Toridori, it's very cool that you did a face revile. :) But yeah it's great seeing you after some time, tho don't let the BS crap that KZbin is trying to tell you what you can do and what you can't do, you can do anything you want on KZbin, just take some things one step at a time and you'll be fine.

OMG MISSED YOU! I used to comment under my old account lol but yes, I still rewatch your Alice and Fran Bow vids. I hope you never take them down cause they're such comfort videos for me especially around Halloween season. Glad to hear that you're doing well! I think Silent Hill 2 got a remaster recently so maybe that would be something for you? I don't care how informed you are before you play games, I just like your personality!

PS2 is definitely a bad apple of the bunch. I suggest emulating GC one instead, it has nicer lighting (no tonemapped ps2 horror) and runs at 60fps.

Shadow on Cynder is fitting but also interesting when you learn the purple dragon's native ability is 'dark aether'. What I would assume is shadow. Its what Malefor and Dark Spyro use. I played most of this with a second player and it was REALLY fun, but the snake chain loved to bug out. But I played it on the Wii and the controls could be interesting. Interesting with Malefor as a purple dragon, the first 4 elements he learned was fire, wind, ice and electricity. I had always assumed Cynder got wind from Malefor as well. (edit: oop you talked about that part lol) I can say, as a kid you don't notice bad pacing.

The statue isn't a 'what if' of adult Spyro, its literally Malefor/The Dark Master. As seen by Malefor's design

This one and A New Beginning I grew up on and A Hero's Tail is my favourite of all the titles, my life would be complete if they remaster it. Edit: I also adore and have an odd respect for Money Bags in this title. His humour is fantastic, he has a cheerful character about him, and he encourages you to purchase things from him as they would help you along your journey, in contrast to the other titles where he demands gems to teach you a skill or activate something for you. The VA did a really good job with bringing his character to a whole and the Devs animating his hologram was immaculate

It's funny that you didn't care for Bubsy's voice when you played this in 2018, but you liked Lani Minella as the narrator in _MediEvil_ 2019. TBH, I hated hearing Lani as Nancy Drew in the majority of the Her Interactive games, but I kind of like Lani's work in the _Duke Nukem_ games and other first-person shooters of the time.

Never seen any of your vids before but this is quite a nice review. A Hero's Tail for me was and still is a decent albeit very boring game. didn't help that around the time this game was out, I believe Crash Twinsanity was out too - which was the more fun game, despite it's development troubles.

I agree - FLY, YOU STUPID DRAGON! Also I don't think this game had much of a build-up to that bad Dark Spyro and that caging crystal thing he could do - shouldn't there be more of that in the game or even you controlling it instead using a cheat code to do it?

i dont know if its in every release but the PS2 version i had has that "Argus environment stomp boost to get higher" stop working after 2-3 times should i fail to "get the job done" and theres nothing i could do. his stomps just stopped causing the platform to "rise" and i could never get back up to a place to hop onto him and try again. unless i missed something. but i do remember this fight taking the most time of "trial and error" and later turned into just "error and error" or "error and put the controller down, they dont grow on trees you twit"

On a real PS1, I use Active Camera mode through a whole playthrough. But I haven't done that in over a decade. On a PS1 emulator or the PC version, I use Passive Camera mode and map the camera controls to the right stick. The rotation is still a constant (rather slow) speed, and there's also still no pitch control, but it is a bit more natural to play this way.

Moneybags was obviously meant to show up more, only this time instead of the dinner jacket and jewel collar, he’d be dressed in clothes that match the world. Ripto and Gnorc returning as a team would have made sense. I reckon Flora, the professor, Hansel & Gretel and other familiar faces from the previous games they’d have found a way to get them in as well…..if they remaster this, it needs to be as it was originally intended to be…..

You can use the L2 and R2 buttons on the PS1 emulator, you probably didn't map those buttons to your controller. 😂 I have Duckstation on my PC and Steam Deck via EmuDeck and I'm able to use L2 and R2. I also have them mapped to both triggers so I don't have to hold both at the same time on Steam. Also I agree, the voice acting is so bad. 😂😂😂

As terrible as the game was, I remember having fun laughing with my brother seeing the brown riptoc in the dojo area just turning while frozen. I’m grateful that it introduced the “multiple elements” mechanic because its controversial legacy managed to live on in the LoS trilogy through that mechanic. This game could have been great, but due to poor management from Universal and the dev team, the game took the brunt of the warzones, resulting in a game that it was a miracle that it was playable at all.
