Regardless of what the FMC says, losing an engine on an A340 is not really an "emergency".

An engine failure in a four engine aircraft is not an emergency unless it has the potential to affect other systems, just descend to a lower level and continue.
@johnmorris781523 күн бұрын
@ where do I start. Let’s go from there bottom up ‘not certified for flight on three engines’? Absolute rubbish, the whole point of having more than two engines is so that you don’t have to land within 60 minutes or ETOPS minima if an engine fails. While you will burn more fuel, the use of MCT is only required at the outset of the incident and only if the crew elect to fly an obstacle procedure typically used when on oceanic areas in order to get clear of the airway or over mountainous terrain, once a lower level has been obtained a change to V/S mode would be appropriate, no you would not operate the engines at MCT, while the THR levers have to be in MCT to obtain full autothrust you would pick a level below max service ceiling engine out to provide long range cruise in your new configuration, putting some numbers on it, if normal cruise was F360, engine out max for a four engine would be about F300, if you continue the flight at F280 M.78 and depending on where this incident happened there is a good chance of making destination or at least somewhere close to it. I don’t know where you got your information from but take it from a 34,000 hr pilot who has flown both four and two engine commercial aircraft from Airbus and Boeing.

@subatomicparticle6535Ай бұрын
It's not really an engine failure per say but an indication of a high oil temp on IDG #3 with no other corresponding indication of engine trouble resulting in the crew manually shutting down the engine as a precaution. A real engine failure is when the fan or core explodes.

It is a very busy time. There are checklists that are carefully reviewed despite training for this exact problem, when is not too unusual. The relief crew is there and alert in the background, ready to assist, if required. Then, the craft has to be permitted and directed on directions. It is like a highway in the sky, with each airport being different with different way signs and hopefully, the pilots have landed at this airfield in the past.

I presume a new standby crew will operate the replacement aircraft to PVG. Are they able to re cater the new flight from scratch at short notice?
@Alex-bi8obАй бұрын
The captain said at end of the video that they had an a340 on standby (which is not always the case). The replacement flight was 2 hours after the return landing.

I've watched this a few times and never really spotted this before but I think the Captain initially pulled up the wrong procedure at 1:38 - he has the procedure for IDG Oil temp - this I believe is like an alternator (very simply) and has an action to try to reduce its load (turn off the generator or galley power and reduce electrical output required) Interestingly, the First Officer sees this and at 1:41 you can literally see her brain thinking 'I'm not sure that's quite correct' and then she goes into the procedures, identifies the incorrect one the Captain was referring to and instead pulls out the correct one. Great example of a crew supporting each other which is important when things are going well but critical when things are going wrong.

The pilot saying "Sorry, hast Recht" (I'm sorry, you're right, at 2:18 min), thus admitting that his first officer was right and he values her opinion, is a great example of professionalism and prime Crew Resource Management. Nice job!

I didnt not aporove of the captain's announcenent. He said I do not have very good news and we had to shut down an engine because it too high of temperature. They were going to work on the problem and get back to them. I think he should have said the jey is flying very well but out of an ambundance of caution we will be turning around. because of an issue. We will arrive in so many minutes. I do not need to know an engine blew. He couched the announcement in an alarming matter.
