I'm sorry to hear that about your mom. 😔 It sounds like she had a long great life and was very proud and supportive of you. Nothing we say here will make you feel better. The best we can do is create and cherish wonderful memories with our loved ones while they are still here with us and keep them close in our minds when they are no longer here with us.

Great voicings very nice , but very complex if I not now where they came from... I wil practice these also... Is it True that the greatest or professionals pianist having there own trics to build these voicings... that they see from each other heey what's that came from? Like 2 greatest magicians not nowing the tric from the other? I am study first the guidetones from each 7th chords... and wil practice these in the circle of fifths but also random by see the first chord ... thats the tricy part to now right away what to play by random ... Quick thinking is always the hard side of the game😂 But I learned not to be overwelmed to want play everything the most jazzy chords are the rootles and the 2 grip ,its maybe a bag with the best trics and sometimes to switch for a other tric... 😊

@@roberthodson Oh Japan! Riyoko Takagi is in NYC now until June 25th. I've been helping her out getting around to places she wants to go to network and let her use my keyboard while she's here. She made her NYC debut the same day she landed, at a jazz restaurant in Harlem as a guest and got noticed right away for playing with musicians she never met. Everyone started to make plans to jam with her. The schedule is getting filled up pretty quick and it's only been 2 days. I got exactly 3 days heads up about the exact dates of her visit, spontaneous just like jazz. If you check her socials, you can see her updates.

Thanks for the clear explanation. Your other video on voicings is super helpful too. What do you recommend for beginners to start off with for improvisation? Do you suggest learning licks and applying them directly into tunes?
@roberthodson13 күн бұрын
Hey -- sorry for the late reply! Somehow I missed the notification of your comment. To be honest, I'm not a huge fan of learning licks and plugging them in. I like to start with making simple melodies from the notes of the chords and then gradually embellish those. I'm planning a bunch more videos on the topic -- hopefully you'll find them to be helpful.

Great lesson. Will take me a while to get through this. 😅 8:52 "So, if you were to stop this video right now and play through this 100-200 times, it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world." Haha, it would take me days/weeks to get past this part. But really beautiful improvised playing later in the video. Keeping time is the hardest part for sure when deviating from practiced playing.

Awesome lesson and plethora of various ideas! One thing I'd suggest is adding timestamps for different sections (harmonization levels in this case, as well as final playthrough at the end). That would make it easier to navigate a half hour video. Loved the walking bassline at the end in the final performance! 👏

Thanks so much for the comment. I really appreciate comments, questions, and feedback from fellow musicians. Your comment is interesting and something I'm thinking a lot about lately, since I have in mind some tutorials or analytical videos talking about my process. The problem is that I'm pretty much following the Keith Jarrett idea of turning off your brain and letting your hands play what they find. Of course, they go to patterns and sounds they are familiar with, which is based on the music you've studied, listened to, played, etc.. A big thing I've been thinking about is playing "through" sounds/chords/ideas; an individual sound doesn't have meaning in and of itself but rather from the process that it unfolds within. Another thing is the role of "intention" -- often I find that a chord shouldn't sound good, but if I intend it to sound good, it does... it's a strange thing. Anyway... thanks again! Your comment gets me thinking... I'd love to continue the conversation.

@@roberthodson I really enjoy different improvs and try to visualize in my mind a hypothetical story. The new AI-driven KZbin recommendation algorithm (circa 2nd half of 2023) is really biased against smaller channels and limits your exposure by amplifying underlying biases in viewer demographics, allowing complete exclusion from viewership of certain genders and age groups. My own channel content got locked to a 100% male audience of older age, for both 1 year old content (that used to receive views from wide demographics in the past but doesn't anymore) and newer content, it's really bad.

Thanks for the comment! I updated the title of the video. I agree for the beginning, for sure. I was thinking of 00:26 as reminiscent of Harry Potter -- this shifting harmonies there reminded me of a certain theme that I often hear jazz pianist Jacky Terrasson use in his improvisations (my knowledge of HP soundtracks is second hand 😄)

@@roberthodson I guess I can kind of hear it, the second part would maybe fit harry potter a little. But this entire piece would feel 100% at home in spirited away or perhaps howls moving castle and you can't convince me otherwise xD
