Great idea for isolating the pulley with the bad bearing

Thanks Joseph. I hope this trick or similar helps you somewhere down the line in the future when working on your tractors or running farm implements from them. Cheers Tony

That does spruce it up nicely. 🤔 I like the bottle brush trick. What kind of paint is that? An enamel? Tempted to do this - but then I’ll want to paint the whole machine. 😬
@eyuptony6 күн бұрын
Its just household paint, Crown Solo, one coat, Stuart. You can see the tin in the video on the table. I'd bought it previously to do my lathe drip tray. Check the photo out at the end or my videos. I have to make a proper backsplash for my current, lathe that will be painted white as well. My old Harrison L5 had a white drip tray and backsplash, it looked miles better, a lot brighter and cleaner, easier to see the part your working on as well. Tony
Thx for the vid., and duct tape drive belt demo. LOL

@Warped65er Great. Thanks for your continued support. It was a bit of fun. It made my day though, knowing I didn't need to buy a pair or expensive tapered roller head bearings. Tony

Good drive belt trick Tony. Not seen that before. The tension bearing sounds a bit dry. Some grease would probably quieten it down. Cheers Rob

can you change the grease(?) in the spindle bearings without stripping the whole spindle down? On older electric motors we used to remove a plug below the bearing housing and pump in new grease until all the old grease was expelled from the plug and the new grease appeared. Check the grease in the motor bearings as well, in vertically mounted motors the grease can get hot and run into the motor leaving the top bearing virtually dry. Phil
@eyuptony8 күн бұрын
No if I remember correctly on the spindle bearings. They do sound a bit dry, as does the large drive pulley bearings at the back. I'm going to pump some grease into them and see if there is change in sound. The main drive motor is horizontal at the back of the machine with a wick feed oil reservoir cast into the top of the motor housing. I've often wondered where the oil is going? Motor bearings or the integral clutch assembly, moving parts etc. I don't have a maintenance manual for this machine unfortunately. Thanks Phil 👍

Archdale were good solid machines, I chased but never caught two of them before I got my Harrison. The gaffa tape is a brilliant idea that you wouldnt think would work, but it did!! Good work Tony! Phil

Thanks Phil. It was a brief brainwave that somehow flashed across my mind when I needed a shorter flat belt. I bet you could use this method as a stop gap to get you out of a hole if the belt suppliers are closed. Cheers Tony

It might look better but does it cut any better? and some of those gouges in the table could do with levelling up? Not as bad as mine so take heart! One gouge is at the edge of my table and it tapers down at least a quarter of an inch deep, the quill wasn't locked and a two inch end mill dragged the cutter down into the table.. :<(

Painting is a big commitment I try to avoid. All that scraping and cleaning. But it does look smart. Glad you are feeling better Tony. My son had a rotten cold and cough over Christmas - meaning he has not been able to do the jobs he promised me and so they are pushed back a couple of weeks now. My wife says "think about your son not the jobs .... jobs can be done anytime" but that's mums for you, taking my son's side again🎄🎄😁😁.

Very cool mill, it will be great to see it working. It is surprising how much space a mill takes up, we have two in our workshop and it has made the space look small. At least your bridgeport does not take up much space 🙂 We put a cheap DRO on our big Cincinnati and that makes a huge improvement. If you go down that route we found the Sino products are the best, Sino products are often rebranded and sold by companies such a Vevor
