actually acording to vray you need to half the shift value for 8 bit displacement maps so if you have 3 inches you would do -1.5 inches because any value of grey would be no displacement i think if i remmeber correctly .but if you are using a 32 bit exr file you dont need to adjust shift but set your min max values to something within the range of your displacement map.
