Sorry to have to tell you that route, originally Latin, came to English from French, and they still pronounce it La route like the English, the correct pronounciation is, actually, the French and English route, as in root. Why Americans started pronouncing it rowt I do not know, but it is a good example of a mispronounciation which has become commonly used, in America.

Say "Solder" as in the Solder for the Soldering Iron. That's always a fun one. Sounds like "Soda" when Americans say it. Or probably "soder" - like the L is silent. However, I would guess there's accents in the USA that Do pronounce the L, like Brits do. "Say `Soder` as in the Soder for the Sodering Iron." Does it drive me crazy as a Brit - it does, I shout "It's SOLDer, FFS, there's an L in it, can't you see it!!!" I need to get a life.

Perfect explanation. I also use both pronunciations without giving it too much thought. I had a “paper rowt” when I was a kid (I delivered newspapers), but today I might call it a “paper root.”

Good lesson, thank you. Phonetically English is the hardest of all European languages because of something I could ascertain in one of those huge unabridged dictionaries: Around 3-4 words out of ten in English are actually French words. This made English far more precise than Old English but it messed up its phonetics.

Than you for clarifying the issue of the plosives. The other day I mentioned a sport in Spanish called "pato" (played mounted in horses) but it was heard as "bato."
